Power & Run Time

The Generac iQ3500 in use

The Generac iQ3500

The Generac iQ3500's engine, 212 cc Generac OHV 4-stroke, fueled by gasoline, can deliver 120V. It provides a running wattage of 3,000W and reaches a peak wattage of 3,500W. Moreover, the parallel capability (Generac 7668 Parallel kit (opens in a new tab) not included) allows for doubling of power output when paired with another similar or compatible unit, providing increased energy capacity and reliability for diverse needs.

Its starting mechanisms include a standard recoil pull-rope starting mechanism and a user-friendly and efficient electric starter (battery included). It features Generac's PowerDial™, an easy-to-use dial with three operation settings.

The iQ3500's fuel tank holds 2.6 gallons, ensuring uninterrupted operation for up to 14.1 hours with a full tank (fuel consumption approximately 0.18 GPH).

Featuring a <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), the iQ3500 delivers a clean sine wave, guaranteeing the safety of your sensitive electronics plugged into its AC outlets.

Outlets

The control panel is equipped with the following 3 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle

Additionally, it offers 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports ideal for charging various electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets.

This Generac generator features an L5-30R receptacle, enabling an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. However, it is still not quite RV ready.

Portability

As an inverter generator, the Generac iQ3500 showcases a closed design (L23.7 x W18 x H21.7 in), enhancing aesthetics and ensuring quieter operation compared to conventional, open frame models. The generator has a contemporary design, convenient for recreationally generating power.

While technically classified as 'portable' due to its ability to be moved, the 109.1 lbs of this generator make manual lifting and transportation incredibly difficult. Thus, you may also want to consider purchasing a wheel kit for this generator, similar to this one (opens in a new tab).

Features

Panel of the Generac iQ3500

The iQ3500's control panel

Designed with a digital data center, the control panel of the iQ3500 grants you access to crucial data on the power output, remaining run time, lifetime run hours and fuel level, ensuring practical monitoring of its status and activity.

In addition to this info, several light indicators serve to show you when the generator is ready, the generator is on overload and its oil levels are insufficient.

From a security standpoint, the generator is furnished with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, ensuring peace of mind during operation.

Beyond the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to assist with setup, the Generac iQ3500 ships with supplementary accessories: funnel, oil and tool kit.

The Generac iQ3500 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Generac iQ3500 compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 2500 and 3500 W).

  • With a weight of 109.1 lbs, the Generac iQ3500 sits in the heavier end of the spectrum among inverter generators rated from 2500 to 3500. if you wish to prioritize weight, the Pulsar PGD40iSCO is one of the top contenders in its power category, weighing only 46 pounds.
  • With up to 14.1 hours of runtime at a 25% load on a full tank, the iQ3500 is in line with the average autonomy range for inverter generators of comparable power. If prolonged run time is essential to your needs, you could consider the Champion 200914, which offers one of the highest autonomy among devices with similar power output, lasting up to 22 hours.
  • Autonomy holds its importance, however, it is largely dependent on the generator’s fuel capacity and so, it is nonsensible to discuss it without mentioning fuel efficiency as well. The inverter generator burns fuel at a rate of around 0.18 GPH when running at a 25% load, which is consistent with the average fuel usage of models of comparable power output. If you wish to get a unit of similar power, but with one of the best fuel efficiency, you could consider the Energizer eZV3500P, which has an impressively low fuel consumption of 0.13 GPH.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 2500-3500W inverter generators, the Generac iQ3500 is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

My review is a bit premature as I haven’t run it in “real world” conditions yet.I have only run it for an hour to break it in.

    + PROS:
    • Started right away.
    • Very quiet, especially in economy mode.
    • Overall look is nice and looks good.
    • Has a fuel meter showing how much fuel is left as well as how many hours of run time are left.
    • Battery was defective out of the box, but Generac sent me one right away with no fuss.
    - CONS:
    • Battery was defective.
    • A bit pricey for how many watts it generates.
    • Comes with SAE30 oil which isn't meant to be operated below 0'C so depending on where you store it, you may need to preheat it before starting.
    • It isn't light.

Fired right up, out of the box, battery connected, oil and fuel added. two quick pushes on the electric starter swithch and it was up and running.

    + PROS:
    • Simple to set up, start and test.
    - CONS:
    • None so far. It hasn't been stressed tested, yet. Once I get three more extension cords to share power with the neighbors in our condo, once the grid goes out later this fall, will be the real test.
