Zoom on the Generac iQ3500

In summary, the Generac iQ3500 is a compact portable inverter generator especially useful for:

  • RV travellers looking for even more independence
  • Occasional participants of outdoor events, competitions, concerts and festivals
  • Handcrafting enthusiasts who wish to work on-the-go
  • Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout

The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, the extra features it benefits from, and any relevant emission compliance details.

Power & Run Time

The Generac iQ3500 in use

The Generac iQ3500

The Generac iQ3500 houses a 212 cc Generac OHV 4-stroke engine, which provides 120V, consumes gasoline and delivers a running wattage of 3000W along with a peak wattage of 3500W. In addition, as it is parallel capable (Generac 7668 Parallel kit (opens in a new tab) not included), this power can be doubled when linked to another similar or compatible unit.

This inverter generator can be started thanks to a conventional pull-start mechanism, but also to a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included). It features Generac's PowerDial™, an easy-to-use dial with three operation settings.

The iQ3500 can operate for up to 14.1 hours with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.18 GPH), due to its fuel capacity of 2.6 gallons.

Sensitive electronics can be safely plugged in the AC outlets, as the iQ3500 produces a clean sine wave, with a <3% Total Harmonic Disruption (THD).

Outlets

The control panel includes the following 3 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle

In addition, it provides 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports with which you may charge electronics, for example mobile phones or tablets, conveniently.

This Generac generator features an L5-30R receptacle, enabling an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. However, it is still not quite RV ready.

Portability

Since the Generac iQ3500 is an inverter generator, its closed design (L23.7 x W18 x H21.7 in) has an esthetical advantage over conventional, open frame devices. The design follows the contemporary trends and is perfect for recreationally generating power.

Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 109.1 pounds. Thus, to enhance the generator's mobility, it is worth considering purchasing a wheel kit, such as this one (opens in a new tab).

Features

The iQ3500's control panel

Monitoring of the iQ3500's status and activity is made possible by a digital data center, which provides information on the lifetime run hours, remaining run time, power output and fuel level and is one of the features of its control panel.

In addition to this info, when its oil levels are insufficient, the generator is ready and the generator is on overload, you will be informed by the featured light indicators.

From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), giving you a peace of mind during use.

Along the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), useful for starting the generator right away, the Generac iQ3500's package also includes these accessories: funnel, tool kit and oil.

Emissions

The Generac iQ3500 is CARB-compliant. Thus, selling and purchasing this generator is allowed in each of the 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor and thus, may be used in forested areas.

The Generac iQ3500 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Generac iQ3500 compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 2500 and 3500 W).

  • Considering its dry weight of 109.1 pounds, the Generac iQ3500 is one of the heavier inverter generators producing between 2500 and 3500 running watts. If weight matters to you, one of the champions in this power range is the Genmax GM3300i with only 47.4 pounds.
  • Given that the iQ3500 reaches an autonomy of up to 14.1 hours with a full tank and at 25% load, it is placed within the average autonomy range of similarly powerful inverter generators. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the Champion 200914, with up to 22 hours.
  • Autonomy holds its importance, however, it is largely dependent on the generator’s fuel capacity and so, it is nonsensible to discuss it without mentioning fuel efficiency as well. Standing at an estimated 0.18 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 25% load, this inverter generator is somewhat average in this area compared to other devices, within the aforementioned wattage range. If not satisfied with the afore-mentioned fuel consumption, you may wish to check out the Energizer eZV3500P. With a fuel consumption of as little as 0.13 GPH, it is one of the most efficient generators currently on the market.

Price comparison

As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 2500-3500W inverter generators, the Generac iQ3500 is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

Fired right up, out of the box, battery connected, oil and fuel added. two quick pushes on the electric starter swithch and it was up and running.

    + PROS:
    • Simple to set up, start and test.
    - CONS:
    • None so far. It hasn't been stressed tested, yet. Once I get three more extension cords to share power with the neighbors in our condo, once the grid goes out later this fall, will be the real test.
