Description
Zoom on the Generac GP2200i
In a few words, the Generac GP2200i is a compact and lightweight portable inverter generator perfectly suited for:
- Camping and tailgating buffs looking to enhance their experience
- Amateur DIY lovers
In the forthcoming sections, you'll delve into its power characteristics, the various outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the additional features it boasts.
Power & Run Time
The Generac GP2200i is powered by a 80 cc Generac OHV 4-stroke engine. It delivers 120V, runs on gasoline and offers a running wattage of 1,700W as well as a peak wattage of 2,200W. Moreover, since it is parallel capable (GP2200i Parallel kit (opens in a new tab) not included), its power may be doubled if linked to a second compatible unit.
Its starting mechanism is based on a traditional recoil pull-start mechanism.
Thanks to a fuel capacity of 1.2 gallon, the GP2200i can operate for up to 10.75 hours with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.11 GPH).
Thanks to its low <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), the GP2200i produces a clean sine wave output, making it safe for your sensitive electronics when utilizing the AC outlets.
Outlets
The control panel includes the following 2 AC outlets:
It also sports 2 DC outlets: there's a 12V 8A receptacle allowing you to easily charge your batteries and a 5V USB port allowing you to conveniently charge electronics such as mobile phones and tablets.
Portability
As an inverter generator, the Generac GP2200i showcases a closed design (L19.7 x W11.4 x H17.9 in), enhancing aesthetics and ensuring quieter operation compared to conventional, open frame models. The generator has a contemporary design, convenient for recreationally generating power.
Since the GP2200i weighs only 46.6 lbs, it can be labeled as a portable lightweight generator. It's easy for one person to move around, ensuring power availability on the move. Its handle (molded in the case) allows you to carry it easily, further enhancing its convenience.
Features
The device’s light indicators will display if the generator is ready, the generator is overloaded and the oil level is too low.
From a security standpoint, the generator is furnished with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, ensuring peace of mind during operation.
Besides the classic documentation and an owner's manual to get you promptly started, the Generac GP2200i also comes with some accessories: funnel and oil are included.

The Generac GP2200i versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Generac GP2200i compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 1500 and 2500 W).
- With a dry weight of 46.6 lbs, the Generac GP2200i falls within the expected weight range for inverter generators in the 1500 to 2500 rated wattage. if you wish to prioritize weight, the Genmax GM2000i is one of the top contenders in its power category, weighing only 34.2 pounds.
- At a 25% load, the GP2200i offers up to 10.75 hours of runtime on a full tank, placing it within the average autonomy range among inverter generators of similar power level. If autonomy is your priority, one of the devices of a similar power output with the highest run time is the Yamaha EF2800i, reaching up to 14.7 hours.
- Run time is a key metric, but it's dependent on the generator's fuel capacity. Therefore, discussing fuel efficiency is necessary to get the full picture. This inverter generator has an estimated fuel consumption of roughly 0.11 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 25% load, rendering it somewhat average compared to devices of a similar output. If minimizing fuel usage is one of your key priorities, the Westinghouse iGen2800c is one of the most efficient devices with similar power output, with a gasoline consumption of only 0.08 gallons per hour.

User Reviews
I bought the Generac 2200i a few years ago to prepare for hurricane season. Until Ida I had only used it twice for about a total of 10 hours. After Ida I ran it for about 4 days and burned less than 7 gallons of fuel.
Most of the daytime I was only running the refrigerator/freezer combo and a couple of fans, and (the tv and chargeable electronics I had plugged into a UPS which was then connected to the generator). At night I ran a few lamps with LED bulbs and a portable AC unit which draws about 700kw.
During the afternoon I would try to give it a few hours break while I was doing yard cleanup and I gave it a break in the morning between when it ran out of gas and when the heat forced me out of bed. The generator would run all day and still have gas in it when I filled it up for the night shift. At night it was running for just over 7 hours on what I would estimate at 60% load.
It ran almost everything we needed. Air fryer, coffee maker, blender, toaster, hair dryer all ran no problem. The only limitations were the microwave overloaded it and testing the AC on my neighbors old travel trailer was too much.
The best thing was that all my neighbors were out looking for gas after about 2 days for their large generators and I hadn’t even gone through half of a 5 gallon can of gas. It is also very quiet.
I changed the oil at just over 20 hours total as recommended for first oil change and I definitely say by how dirty it was that should not be skipped. I then changed it again at just under 50 hours as recommended going forward and it wasn’t really that bad.
It did get some direct sunlight one afternoon when I wasn’t paying attention. The generator was definitely hotter than usual but ran fine. After that I put it under a beach umbrella and it stayed much cooler.
I’m definitely very pleased with this generator in real life usage. It ran everything I needed and made life much easier until the power came back on. If I was going to change something I would be add another half gallon to the tank size to run a bit longer under higher load.
