Description
An affordable solution for recreational applications, the GP2200i is the perfect size for tailgating, camping and power on the go.
Zoom on the Generac GP2200i
In summary, the Generac GP2200i is a compact and lightweight portable inverter generator especially useful for:
- Camping and tailgating hobbyists looking for a portable power source
- Handcrafting enthusiasts who wish to work on-the-go
The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the extra features it benefits from.
Power & Run Time
The Generac GP2200i is powered by a 80 cc Generac OHV 4-stroke engine. It delivers 120V, runs on gasoline and offers a running wattage of 1,700W as well as a peak wattage of 2,200W. Moreover, since it is parallel capable (GP2200i Parallel kit (opens in a new tab) not included), its power may be doubled if linked to a second compatible unit.
This inverter generator utilizes a traditional recoil pull-start mechanism for startup.
The fuel capacity of 1.2 gallon allows the GP2200i to operate for up to 10.75 hours with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.11 GPH).
With a <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), the GP2200i delivers a clean sine wave, essential for safeguarding your delicate electronics when plugged into its AC outlets.
Outlets
The control panel features the upcoming 2 AC outlets:
Moreover, it presents 2 DC outlets: there's a 12V 8A receptacle offering a convenient battery charging option and a 5V USB port with which you may charge electronics, for example mobile phones or tablets, conveniently.
Portability
The Generac GP2200i is an inverter generator and features an encased design with the following dimensions: L19.7 x W11.4 x H17.9 in. This design enhances aesthetics and helps minimize noise levels, distinguishing it from conventional, open frame products. This modern design aims to provide an ideal power solution to recreational users.
The GP2200i's weight, at just 46.6 lbs, makes it an ideal choice for those seeking a lightweight and portable generator. Designed for easy mobility, one person can move it around without any difficulty, ensuring power on the go. Adding to its convenience, the handle (molded in the case) enables easy carrying.
Features
The light indicators show you if its oil levels are insufficient, the generator is ready and the generator is overloaded.
Security-wise, this product benefits from an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.
Along the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), useful for starting the generator right away, the Generac GP2200i's package also includes these accessories: funnel and oil.

The Generac GP2200i versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Generac GP2200i compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 1500 and 2500 W).
- At 46.6 lbs dry, the Generac GP2200i is consistent with the standard weight profile for inverters ranging from 1500 to 2500 rated watts. If weight is a key factor for your needs, the Genmax GM2000i is noteworthy for being one of the top contenders in this power range, with a dry weight of 34.2 pounds.
- At a 25% load, the GP2200i's up to 10.75 hours of runtime on a full tank fall within the average autonomy range for similarly powerful inverter generators. If concerned with autonomy, one of the products of a comparable power output, which offers the highest run time, is the Yamaha EF2800i, boasting with up to 14.7 hours.
- Run time is a key metric, but it's dependent on the generator's fuel capacity. Therefore, discussing fuel efficiency is necessary to get the full picture. This inverter generator has an average fuel consumption among comparably powerful devices, as it reaches 0.11 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 25% load. If you wish to get a unit of similar power, but with one of the best fuel efficiency, you could consider the Westinghouse iGen2800c, which has an impressively low fuel consumption of 0.08 GPH.
Here's a list of the most popular specific comparisons:
The bottom line
- Parallel capable
- Inverter
- Decent weight (46.6 lbs)
- Decent run time
- Decent fuel efficiency

User Reviews
This generator has been the most unreliable generator I’ve ever owned. I’ve owned several. I do not recommend anything portable Generac.
I bought the Generac 2200i a few years ago to prepare for hurricane season. Until Ida I had only used it twice for about a total of 10 hours. After Ida I ran it for about 4 days and burned less than 7 gallons of fuel.
Most of the daytime I was only running the refrigerator/freezer combo and a couple of fans, and (the tv and chargeable electronics I had plugged into a UPS which was then connected to the generator). At night I ran a few lamps with LED bulbs and a portable AC unit which draws about 700kw.
During the afternoon I would try to give it a few hours break while I was doing yard cleanup and I gave it a break in the morning between when it ran out of gas and when the heat forced me out of bed. The generator would run all day and still have gas in it when I filled it up for the night shift. At night it was running for just over 7 hours on what I would estimate at 60% load.
It ran almost everything we needed. Air fryer, coffee maker, blender, toaster, hair dryer all ran no problem. The only limitations were the microwave overloaded it and testing the AC on my neighbors old travel trailer was too much.
The best thing was that all my neighbors were out looking for gas after about 2 days for their large generators and I hadn’t even gone through half of a 5 gallon can of gas. It is also very quiet.
I changed the oil at just over 20 hours total as recommended for first oil change and I definitely say by how dirty it was that should not be skipped. I then changed it again at just under 50 hours as recommended going forward and it wasn’t really that bad.
It did get some direct sunlight one afternoon when I wasn’t paying attention. The generator was definitely hotter than usual but ran fine. After that I put it under a beach umbrella and it stayed much cooler.
I’m definitely very pleased with this generator in real life usage. It ran everything I needed and made life much easier until the power came back on. If I was going to change something I would be add another half gallon to the tank size to run a bit longer under higher load.
