Zoom on the Generac XC6500E

In a nutshell, the Generac XC6500E is a portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • Food truck owners who want to ensure that their business is fully self-contained and does not rely on potentially unreliable external power
  • Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
  • Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure

The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, the extra features it benefits from, and any relevant emission compliance details.

Power & Run Time

The Generac XC6500E in use

The Generac XC6500E

The Generac XC6500E's design includes a gasoline-fueled 426 cc Generac G-Force (opens in a new tab) 4-stroke engine. With a 120/240V output, it gives a running wattage of 6,500W and also a peak wattage of 8,125W.

Its starting mechanisms include a conventional pull-start mechanism and a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included).

With a fuel capacity of 8.5 gallons, the XC6500E may run for around 14 hours at 50% load with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.61 GPH).

Sensitive electronics can be safely plugged in the AC outlets, as the XC6500E produces a clean sine wave, with a <5% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD).

Outlets

The full GFCI control panel features the following 6 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

This Generac generator isn't quite RV Ready, but it features an L5-30R receptacle, allowing a simple RV connection through an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, because the XC6500E is equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it can power your home during a power outage, as it can be easily connected to your breaker box to power your household.

Portability

With its dimensions of L34.3 x W28.6 x H32.5 in, the conventional, open frame design of the Generac XC6500E offers stability and allows the generator to be raised above ground level. The device has been designed for tough environments and demanding outdoor use.

As the generator's weight is 257 pounds, manually moving it or transporting it may be challenging, despite the fact that it is technically considered 'portable' (movable). Nevertheless, thanks to its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.

In addition, the device is equipped with a lift hook on the top of its frame, which provides extra safety during the loading, unloading and transport of the generator.

The XC6500E's control panel

One of the many XC6500E's features is the data center, included in its control panel, which conveniently provides information on the lifetime run hours and thus, helps you monitor its activity and status.

Thanks to a built-in fuel gauge, the generator allows you to quickly, conveniently and easily check the gas level at a glance.

From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), giving you a peace of mind during use.

Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the Generac XC6500E also is packed along with the following accessories: oil, funnel and tool kit.

Emissions

The Generac XC6500E is EPA approved, but NOT CARB-compliant. Thus, it cannot be purchased or sold in California.

However, it features a spark arrestor, so it is adequate for use in forested areas.

The Generac XC6500E versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Generac XC6500E compare to generators of similar power (between 6000 and 7000 W).

  • With its weight of 257 lbs, the Generac XC6500E is one of the heavier generators in the 6000-7000 rated wattage category. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Sportsman GEN85KIDF, standing at just 133 lbs.
  • With a run time of around 14 hours at 50% load, the XC6500E has one of the highest run times, compared to its similarly powerful peers.
  • Run times are important, yet thanks to their dependence on the fuel capacity, they should be judged along with the fuel consumption of the device. This generator has an average fuel consumption among comparably powerful devices, as it reaches 0.61 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load. If you wish to acquire one of the most gasoline efficient products of this power range, the A-iPower SUA7000L, with a fuel consumption of 0.36 GPH could be in your good books.

The bottom line

Very pleased with the unit. Not so with Generacs technical assistance.

    + PROS:
    • Less than 5% distortion, clean power.
    • 14 hours run time @50% load with 8.5 gallon tank.
    • Forced lubrication.
    - CONS:
    • Bonded neutral to ground with full GFI protection should be flagged as causing issues for home owners wanting to lock out from the electric grid and feed directly into the home grid. In order to do so, you must use a neutral switching transfer switch requiring modifications to your home's power entrance or bypass the generators GFI. The GFI module has the two hot leads and exit leads hooked up with bolted lugs. Remove the four wires and hook up each of the two appropriate leads to each other and insulate. The wiring schematic is available from the OEM detailing each wire and its color. The GFI is only required on OSHA governed job sites, not for home use. Note, the home use only generators sold by Generac are not neutral bonded to ground AND full GFI protected.
    • This data needs to be noted and available for home owners considering this unit.
