Zoom on the Generac XC6500E

In a nutshell, the Generac XC6500E is a portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • Food truck owners and participants of outdoor events, competitions, concerts and festivals
  • Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
  • Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure

The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, the extra features it benefits from and any relevant emission compliance details.

Power & Run Time

The Generac XC6500E in use

The Generac XC6500E

The Generac XC6500E's engine, 426 cc Generac G-Force 4-stroke, fueled by gasoline, can deliver 120/240V. It provides a running wattage of 6500W and reaches a peak wattage of 8125W.

Its starting mechanisms include a conventional pull-start mechanism and a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included).

With a full tank, the XC6500E can operate for around 14 hours at 50% load (fuel consumption around 0.61 GPH), thanks to its fuel capacity of 8.5 gallons.

Sensitive electronics can be safely plugged in the AC outlets, as the XC6500E produces a clean sine wave, with a <5% Total Harmonic Disruption (THD).

Outlets

The full GFCI control panel features the upcoming 6 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

This Generac generator features an L5-30R receptacle, enabling an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. However, it is still not quite RV ready. Besides, as the XC6500E holds a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: you'll easily be able to connect it to your breaker box to power your home during a power outage.

Portability

With its dimensions of L34.3 x W28.6 x H32.5 in, the conventional, open frame design of the Generac XC6500E offers stability and allows the generator to be raised above ground level. The device has been designed for tough environments and demanding outdoor use.

Since the generator weighs 257 lbs, it will be incredibly difficult to manually lift it and transport it, even though it is technically considered to 'be portable' (in the sense that it is movable). However, this lack of maneuverability is compensated by a wheel kit (⌀10") and a folding handle, with which you can conveniently displace it, once it's on the ground.

In addition, the device is equipped with a lift hook on the top of its frame, which provides extra safety during the loading, unloading and transport of the generator.

The XC6500E's control panel

To help you monitor the XC6500E's status and activity, its control panel is equipped with a digital data center, giving you information on the lifetime run hours.

The generator includes a built-in fuel gauge, a quick, easy and convenient method of checking the device’s gas level.

As far as security is concerned, the generator can be used with a peace of mind, as it features an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker).

Besides the classic documentation and a user manual to get you promptly started, the Generac XC6500E also comes with some accessories: funnel, tool kit and oil are included.

Emissions

The Generac XC6500E is EPA approved, but NOT CARB-compliant. Thus, it cannot be purchased or sold in California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor and therefore, can be used in forested areas.

The Generac XC6500E versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Generac XC6500E compare to generators of similar power (between 6000 and 7000 W).

  • As its dry weight is 257 pounds, the Generac XC6500E is one of the heavier of the products which can generate 6000 to 7000 running watts. If weight matters to you, one of the champions in this power range is the Lifan LF7250 with only 140 pounds.
  • With a run time of around 14 hours at 50% load, the XC6500E has one of the higher run times, compared to its similarly powerful peers.
  • Run times are important, yet thanks to their dependence on the fuel capacity, they should be judged along with the fuel consumption of the device. This generator has an estimated fuel consumption of roughly 0.61 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load, rendering it somewhat average compared to devices of a similar output. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the Lifan ESI 7000iER-EFI, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.38 GPH, may be the right generator for you.

Price comparison

As you can see from this dynamic chart, when compared to other 6000-7000W generators, the Generac XC6500E is on the expensive side of the price range.

While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.

The bottom line
