Description
Zoom on the Generac XC6500
In a nutshell, the Generac XC6500 is a portable generator mostly geared towards:
- Food truck owners who do not wish to see their business interrupted under any circumstances
- Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
- Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed, including its emission compliance information.
Power & Run Time
The Generac XC6500's design includes a gasoline-fueled 426 cc Generac G-Force (opens in a new tab) 4-stroke engine. With a 120/240V output, it gives a running wattage of 6500W and also a peak wattage of 8125W.
The generator features a simple and elegant electric starter (battery not included).
The XC6500 can operate for around 14 hours at 50% load with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.61 GPH), due to its fuel capacity of 8.5 gallons.
The XC6500 generates a clean sine wave: providing <5% Total Harmonic Disruption (THD), delicate electronics can be plugged in its AC outlets safely.
Outlets
The full GFCI control panel includes the following 6 AC outlets:
This Generac generator features an L5-30R receptacle, enabling an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. However, it is still not quite RV ready. Besides, since the XC6500 bears a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it is easily connectible to a breaker box and can power your home in case of a power outage.
Portability
With its dimensions of L34.3 x W28.6 x H32.5 in, the conventional, open frame design of the Generac XC6500 offers stability and allows the generator to be raised above ground level. The generator is designed for ideal use outdoors and in rough environments.
Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 243 pounds. Nevertheless, thanks to its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.
A lift hook, which is on the top of the frame, serves as an extra safety feature for the transport, unloading and loading of the device.
Features
To help you monitor the XC6500's status and activity, its control panel is equipped with a digital data center, giving you information on the lifetime run hours.
The generator allows for a quick, easy and convenient assessment of its gas level, as it is equipped with a built-in fuel gauge.
As for its security measures, the device features an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, letting you use it with a peace of mind.
While the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), helpful for starting the device promptly, come with the Generac XC6500, the following accessories are also included: tool kit, oil and funnel.
Emissions
The Generac XC6500 is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Therefore, its sale and purchase are permitted in all of the 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor and thus, may be used in forested areas.

The Generac XC6500 versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Generac XC6500 compare to generators of similar power (between 6000 and 7000 W).
- As its dry weight is 243 pounds, the Generac XC6500 is one of the heavier of the products which can generate 6000 to 7000 running watts. If weight is your top priority, one of the champions in this power category is the Sportsman GEN85KIDF, weighing just 133 pounds.
- As the XC6500 features an autonomy of around 14 hours at 50% load, it has one of the highest run times in comparison to the other generators of its power range.
- While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank’s capacity and thus, doesn’t say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. As this generator uses an estimated 0.61 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load, it finds itself in the average gasoline consumption range of similar products. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.38 GPH, the Lifan ESI 7000iER-EFI is a device you should look out for.
Price comparison
As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 6000-7000W generators, the Generac XC6500 is on the expensive side of the price range.
While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.
The bottom line
- Several accessories included
- Full GFCI panel
- G-Force engine
- Electric start
- Clean sine wave
- High run time
- Decent fuel efficiency
- On the expensive side
- Battery not included
- No recoil back-up
- No remote start
- On the heavy side (243 lbs)
