Zoom on the Generac XC6500
In a nutshell, the Generac XC6500 is a portable generator mostly geared towards:
- Food van owners who know that just a short power outage could lose them hundreds of dollars
- Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
- Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure
Power & Run Time
The Generac XC6500 houses a 426 cc Generac G-Force (opens in a new tab) 4-stroke engine, which provides 120/240V, consumes gasoline and delivers a running wattage of 6500W along with a peak wattage of 8125W.
This generator is started via a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery not included).
The XC6500 can operate for around 14 hours at 50% load with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.61 GPH), due to its fuel capacity of 8.5 gallons.
The XC6500 generates a clean sine wave: providing <5% Total Harmonic Disruption (THD), delicate electronics can be plugged in its AC outlets safely.
The full GFCI control panel features the upcoming 6 AC outlets:
While this Generac generator is not RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle can be used for a simple RV connection with an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, as it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the XC6500 is transfer switch ready: in case of a power outage, you will be easily able to connect it to a breaker box and power your household.
The Generac XC6500 has the following dimensions: L34.3 x W28.6 x H32.5 in. In combination with its conventional, open frame design, they provide support and allow the generator to be raised above ground level. The generator is designed for ideal use outdoors and in rough environments.
Since the generator weighs 243 lbs, it will be incredibly difficult to manually lift it and transport it, even though it is technically considered to 'be portable' (in the sense that it is movable). However, this lack of maneuverability is compensated by its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle, with which you can conveniently shift it, once it's on the ground.
Further safety during transport, loading and unloading of the device is provided by a lift hook, which is placed on the top of the generator's frame.
A digital data center, one of the features of the XC6500's control panel, gives you information on the lifetime run hours, and thus, is helpful for the monitoring of its activity and status.
The fuel level of the generator can be determined quickly, easily, and conveniently with the help of its built-in fuel gauge.
As far as security is concerned, the generator can be used with a peace of mind, as it features an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off.
With the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), letting you start the generator quickly, the Generac XC6500 also comes with several accessories, including: tool kit, funnel and oil.
The Generac XC6500 is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. It can therefore be sold and purchased in all 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, making it usable in forested areas.
The Generac XC6500 versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Generac XC6500 compare to generators of similar power (between 6000 and 7000 W).
- Considering its dry weight of 243 pounds, the Generac XC6500 is one of the heavier generators producing between 6000 and 7000 running watts. If weight matters to you, one of the champions in this power range is the Sportsman GEN85KIDF with only 133 pounds.
- The XC6500 provides one of the highest run time among similarly powerful devices, reaching around 14 hours at 50% load.
- Run times are important, yet thanks to their dependence on the fuel capacity, they should be judged along with the fuel consumption of the device. Standing at an estimated 0.61 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load, this generator is somewhat average in this area compared to other devices, within the aforementioned wattage range. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.36 GPH, the A-iPower SUA7000L is a device you could look out for.
As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 6000-7000W generators, the Generac XC6500 is on the expensive side of the price range.
While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.
