Zoom on the ECHO EGi-4000
In summary, the ECHO EGi-4000 is a portable inverter generator especially useful for:
- RV travellers looking for even more independence
- People occasionally participating in outdoor fairs, festivals or events
- Handcrafting enthusiasts who wish to work on-the-go
- Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
- Camping and tailgating hobbyists looking for a portable power source
In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device.
Power & Run Time
The ECHO EGi-4000's core is the 212 cc OHV 4-stroke engine, which runs on gasoline. With an output of 120V, it provides a running wattage of 3,400W and a peak wattage of 4,000W.
This inverter generator starts operation using a simple traditional pull-start mechanism.
With a full tank, the EGi-4000 can operate for around 10 hours at 50% load (fuel consumption around 0.33 GPH), thanks to its fuel capacity of 3.3 gallons.
The EGi-4000 generates a clean sine wave: providing <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), delicate electronics can be plugged in its AC outlets safely.
Outlets
The control panel features the following 3 AC outlets:
Additionally, it offers 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports enabling convenient charging of devices like mobile phones and tablets.
Thanks to its TT-30R receptacle (TT stands for 'Travel Trailer'), this ECHO generator is RV Ready, making it ideal for powering recreational vehicles.
Portability
Measuring L27 x W18.8 x H24 in, the classic open frame construction of the ECHO EGi-4000 provides stability while enabling convenient maintenance access to components and adequate air cooling. The generator is designed for ideal use outdoors and in rough environments.
The EGi-4000's dry weight of 86 lbs lets you use its power anywhere needed. Moreover, once it’s on the ground, its wheel kit and its folding handle will allow you to shift it without effort.
Features
One of the many EGi-4000's features is the digital data center, included in its control panel, which conveniently provides information on the fuel level, remaining run time and power output and thus, helps you monitor its activity and status.
Security-wise, this product benefits from an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.
The EGi-4000 also benefits from ECHO’s COntrol™ carbon monoxide detection. This system monitors the accumulation of CO gas while the generator is running and will shut off the engine if the levels become dangerously high.
Accessory-wise, along with the previously mentioned features, the ECHO EGi-4000 is packaged with the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), helping you start the device right away.
Note
The unit used to be able to be paired with a smartphone via the ECHO COMMAND™ app. As of 2024/05/01, this app is no longer available.
The ECHO EGi-4000 versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the ECHO EGi-4000 compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 2500 and 3500 W).
- Since the generator weighs in at a dry weight of 86 lbs, the ECHO EGi-4000 belongs in the expected weight range for inverters which can produce between 2500 and 3500 rated watts. If you are mindful of weight, the Pulsar PGD40iSCO is among the top contenders in this power range, with a dry weight of 46 pounds.
- Among its inverters with similar power, the EGi-4000 offers one of the higher run times, running for around 10 hours at 50% load. If prolonged run time is essential to your needs, you could consider the Generac iQ3600DF, which offers one of the highest autonomy among devices with similar power output, lasting around 13 hours.
- Run time is a key metric, but it's dependent on the generator's fuel tank capacity. Therefore, discussing fuel efficiency is necessary for a complete understanding. In fact, this inverter generator is not one of the most fuel-efficient options in the aforementioned wattage range: its estimated gasoline consumption at 50% load is around 0.33 GPH. If gasoline efficiency is at the top of your list, you may want to have a look at the Pulsar PGD40iSCO, which has great fuel efficiency, with a gas consumption of only 0.22 gallons per hour.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 2500-3500W inverter generators, the ECHO EGi-4000 is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
The bottom line
- In the expected price range
- COntrol™ technology
- RV Ready
- Inverter
- High run time
- Decent weight (86 lbs)
- No electric start
- No parallel ports
- Low fuel efficiency

How do you start the echo egi 4000 (Asked December 13, 2022)
There is a lever located above the air filter. It should be placed on the START (middle) position before pulling the starter rope. Once the generator runs, the lever should be in the RUN (right) position.
