Zoom on the ECHO EGi-4000
In a nutshell, the ECHO EGi-4000 is a portable inverter generator mostly geared towards:
- RV travellers who wish to upgrade their experience to another level
- Occasional participants of outdoor events, competitions, concerts and festivals
- DIYers who wish to improve their efficiency with tools
- Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
- Camping and tailgating hobbyists looking for a portable power source
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed, including its emission compliance information.
Power & Run Time
The ECHO EGi-4000 is powered by a 212 cc OHV 4-stroke engine. It delivers 120V, runs on gasoline and offers a running wattage of 3,400W as well as a peak wattage of 4,000W.
This inverter generator features a conventional pull-start mechanism.
The fuel capacity of 3.3 gallons allows the EGi-4000 to operate for around 10 hours at 50% load with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.33 GPH).
The EGi-4000 generates a clean sine wave: providing <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), delicate electronics can be plugged in its AC outlets safely.
Outlets
The control panel includes the following 3 AC outlets:
In addition, it provides 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports with which charging of electronics like mobile phones and tablets is made convenient.
Thanks to its TT-30R receptacle (TT stands for 'Travel Trailer'), this ECHO generator is RV Ready.
Portability
The ECHO EGi-4000 has the following dimensions: L27 x W18.8 x H24 in. In combination with its conventional, open frame design, they provide support and allow the generator to be raised above ground level. The generator is designed for ideal use outdoors and in rough environments.
With a dry weight of 86 lbs, the EGi-4000 can easily follow you wherever your power needs are. Moreover, its wheel kit and its folding handle will allow you to effortlessly shift it once it's on the ground.
Features
Monitoring of the EGi-4000's status and activity is made possible by a digital data center, which provides information on the remaining run time, fuel level and power output and is one of the features of its control panel.
From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, giving you a peace of mind during use.
The EGi-4000 also benefits from ECHO’s COntrol™ carbon monoxide detection. This system monitors the accumulation of CO gas while the generator is running and will shut off the engine if the levels become dangerously high.
Regarding its accessories, besides the aforementioned features, the ECHO EGi-4000's box includes the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), letting you start it right off the bat.
ECHO COMMAND™
ECHO’s COMMAND™ app lets you pair your smartphone with your EGi-4000 inverter generator. It allows you to always know exactly what is going on and to make adjustments when needed, so that everything keeps running without unexpected power loss.
Using Bluetooth technology, the generator communicates with the COMMAND™ app (available on iOS (opens in a new tab) and Android (opens in a new tab) devices) to conveniently monitor power consumption, fuel level, remaining runtime, and even remotely shut off your generator directly from your smartphone.
The information displayed within the COMMAND™ App is identical to the information displayed on the LCD screen of the EGi-4000. Moreover, the COMMAND™ app also supports parallel operation.
Emissions
The ECHO EGi-4000 is CARB-compliant. It can therefore be sold and purchased in all 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, so it is adequate for use in forested areas.
The ECHO EGi-4000 versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the ECHO EGi-4000 compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 2500 and 3500 W).
- Having a dry weight of 86 lbs, the ECHO EGi-4000 belongs in the expected weight range for inverter generators which produce 2500 to 3500 rated watts. Regarding dry weight, one of the champions in the same power range is the Pulsar PGD40iSCO, with a dry weight of only 46 lbs.
- With a run time of around 10 hours at 50% load, the EGi-4000 has one of the higher run times, compared to its similarly powerful peers. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the Ryobi RYi4022X, with around 12 hours.
- The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. This inverter generator is rather wasteful, compared to other devices within the aforementioned output range, when it comes to gasoline consumption, as it reaches roughly 0.33 GPH at a 50% load. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the Pulsar PGD40iSCO, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.22 GPH, may be the right generator for you.
Price comparison
As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 2500-3500W inverter generators, the ECHO EGi-4000 is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
The bottom line
- In the expected price range
- COntrol™ technology
- RV Ready
- Inverter
- COMMAND™ App
- High run time
- Decent weight (86 lbs)
- No electric start
- No parallel ports
- Low fuel efficiency

How do you start the echo egi 4000 (Asked December 13, 2022)
There is a lever located above the air filter. It should be placed on the START (middle) position before pulling the starter rope. Once the generator runs, the lever should be in the RUN (right) position.
