Description

The DS5000DX generator is perfect for power at home and on-the-go, with 5,000 peak watts and 4,000 running watts of compact Dual Fuel power.

Zoom on the DuroStar DS5000DX

In a few words, the DuroStar DS5000DX is a portable generator perfectly suited for:

  • RV travellers who wish to upgrade their experience to another level
  • People occasionally participating in outdoor fairs, festivals or events
  • Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
  • Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment

Over the following sections, you'll uncover its power characteristics, the selection of outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it includes.

Power & Run Time

The DuroStar DS5000DX in use

The DuroStar DS5000DX

Featuring dual-fuel technology, the DuroStar DS5000DX provides 120/240V, as well as versatility and power. Running on gasoline, it delivers a running wattage of 4,000W and a peak wattage of 5,000W. Alternatively, when fueled by propane, it offers 3,800 running watts and 4,750 peak watts.

At a noise rating of 69 dBA (less noisy than an office), this generator can be started via a simple traditional pull-start mechanism, or a no-fuss and convenient electric starter (battery included).

Regarding its running time, the DS5000DX, with a 4 gallons fuel capacity, can operate for up to 22 hours with a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.18 GPH). When using propane, it can run for up to 22 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.21 GPH).

The quite high THD (<12%) of the DS5000DX makes it unsuitable for powering sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel is equipped with the following 3 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

Because the DS5000DX is equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it can power your home during a power outage, as it can be easily connected to your breaker box to power your household.

Portability

At L25 x W23 x H22 in, the DuroStar DS5000DX boasts a traditional open frame structure, ensuring stability and allowing for convenient maintenance access to components, promoting air circulation. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.

While technically classified as 'portable' due to its ability to be moved, the 135 lbs of this generator make manual lifting and transportation incredibly difficult. However, the limited maneuverability is remedied with its wheel kit (⌀8") and its folding handle, facilitating convenient shifting once the generator is positioned on the ground.

The DS5000DX's control panel

The DS5000DX's control center features a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours to aid you with the monitoring of its status and activity.

In addition to this info, the device's light indicator will illuminate to indicate if the oil level is too low.

A built-in fuel gauge allows for a quick, easy and convenient check of the fuel level of the generator.

From a security standpoint, the generator is furnished with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), ensuring peace of mind during operation.

The DS5000DX also benefits from DuroStar’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.

Alongside the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) for quick setup, the DuroStar DS5000DX is bundled with additional accessories: funnel, propane hose and tool kit.

The DuroStar DS5000DX versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroStar DS5000DX compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 3500 and 4500 W).

  • At a dry weight of 135 pounds, the DuroStar DS5000DX is one of the heaviest dual fuel devices which can produce between 3500 and 4500 running watts. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the WEN DF402iX, standing at just 66.1 lbs.
  • Among the generators of a comparable running wattage, this generator with a lowest noise of 69 dBA can be judged as noisy. If noise emissions are important to you, one of the least noisy generators of this power range is the Westinghouse iGen5000DF with only 52 dBA.
  • Since the DS5000DX boasts with a run time of up to 22 hours at 25% load, it can be safely judged as a device of a higher run time than most dual fuel generators of a comparable output. If prolonged run time is essential to your needs, you could consider the Firman WH03662OF, which offers one of the highest autonomy among devices with similar power output, lasting up to 25 hours.
  • The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. This generator is one of the more fuel-efficient models of the aforementioned output range, as its estimated fuel consumption reaches just 0.18 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load. If gasoline efficiency is at the top of your list, you may want to have a look at the Champion 201319, which has great fuel efficiency, with a gas consumption of only 0.16 gallons per hour.

The bottom line

STRENGTHS:
  • Dual Fuel
  • CO Alert technology
  • Several accessories included

  • Electric start
  • High run time
  • Fuel efficient
WEAKNESSES:
  • No remote start
  • On the heavy side (135 lbs)
  • On the noisy side (69 dBA)
