Zoom on the DuroStar DS4500X

In a nutshell, the DuroStar DS4500X is a portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • RV travellers looking for even more independence
  • People occasionally participating in outdoor fairs, festivals or events
  • Handcrafting enthusiasts who wish to work on-the-go
  • Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
  • Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working

In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device, along with its emission compliance information.

Power & Run Time

The DuroStar DS4500X in use

The DuroStar DS4500X

The DuroStar DS4500X's design includes a gasoline-fueled 212 cc OHV 4-stroke engine. With a 120/240V output, it gives a running wattage of 3500W and also a peak wattage of 4500W.

The generator features a conventional pull-start mechanism and also a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included). It is rated for a noise of 69 dBA (less noisy than background music).

The DS4500X can operate for around 10.4 hours at 50% load with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.38 GPH), due to its fuel capacity of 4 gallons.

As the DS4500X has a relatively high THD (<12%), it is not recommended to use it to power sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel includes the following 5 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

As the DS4500X holds a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: you'll easily be able to connect it to your breaker box to power your home during a power outage.

Portability

The design of the DuroStar DS4500X is a typical, open frame, with the dimensions of L25 x W23 x H22 in, offering support and stability and enabling the possibility of raising it above ground level. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.

Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 126 pounds. Nevertheless, thanks to its wheel kit and its folding handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.

Features

The DS4500X's control panel

To help you monitor the DS4500X's status and activity, its control panel is equipped with a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours.

In addition to this info, a light indicator shows you if its oil levels are insufficient.

The generator includes a built-in fuel gauge, a quick, easy and convenient method of checking the device’s gas level.

Security-wise, this product benefits from an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.

The DS4500X also benefits from DuroStar’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes. It’s a welcomed additional security feature, but don’t forget to always take your generator outside (opens in a new tab).

With the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), letting you start the generator quickly, the DuroStar DS4500X also comes with several accessories, including: funnel and tool kit.

Emissions

The DuroStar DS4500X is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Therefore, its sale and purchase are permitted in all of the 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor and thus, may be used in forested areas.

The DuroStar DS4500X versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroStar DS4500X compare to generators of similar power (between 3000 and 4000 W).

  • With its weight of 126 lbs, the DuroStar DS4500X is one of the heavier generators in the 3000-4000 rated wattage category. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the WEN GN400i, with a dry weight of just 66.1 pounds.
  • This generator has a somewhat average expected noise for its power range, rated at 69 dBA. If you are concerned with noise, check out the Cat INV4000E, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, with a noise rating of just 51 dBA.
  • The DS4500X's autonomy is somewhat low end compared to devices of its power range, as it reaches only around 10.4 hours at 50% load on a full tank. Concerning the run times, one of the several devices with a comparable output, offering the highest autonomy, is the Predator 4375, which is able to run for around 16 hours.
  • While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank’s capacity and thus, doesn’t say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. This generator has an average fuel consumption among comparably powerful devices, as it reaches 0.38 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the Westinghouse iGen4200, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.17 GPH, may be the right generator for you.

Price comparison

As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 3000-4000W generators, the DuroStar DS4500X is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
