- RV travellers wishing to enhance their freedom and nomad lifestyle
- Occasional participants of outdoor events, competitions, concerts and festivals

- Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials
In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device, along with its emission compliance information.
Power & Run Time
The DuroStar DS4000S is powered by a 208 cc (7 hp) DuroStar OHV 4-stroke engine. It delivers 120V, runs on gasoline and offers a running wattage of 3,300W as well as a peak wattage of 4,000W.
Enjoying a noise rating of 69 dBA (less noisy than an office), this generator gets running thanks to a conventional pull-start mechanism.
The fuel capacity of 4 gallons allows the DS4000S to operate for up to 26 hours with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.15 GPH).
Since the DS4000S has a somewhat high THD (<12%), it is advisable to not use it for the powering of sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel provides the upcoming 3 AC outlets:
This DuroStar generator isn't quite RV Ready, but it features an L5-30R receptacle, allowing a simple RV connection through an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor.
Portability
The DuroStar DS4000S has a conventional, open frame design, of the following dimensions: L23 x W18 x H17.5 in, which offers support and allows it to be raised above ground level. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.
The DS4000S can be taken anywhere with you, thanks to its weight of 92 lbs. Furthermore, the open frame of the generator further helps when holding and moving it to a different place.
It is also possible to purchase the official wheel kit (opens in a new tab) to help you transport the DS4000S more easily.
Features
To help you monitor the DS4000S's status and activity, its control panel is equipped with a convenient voltmeter, which provides an easy way to monitor power output anytime.
In addition to this info, a light indicator serves to show you when its oil levels are insufficient.
A built-in fuel gauge allows for a quick, easy and convenient check of the fuel level of the generator.
As far as security is concerned, the generator can be used with a peace of mind, as it features an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker).
Besides the classic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, the DuroStar DS4000S also comes with some accessories: tool kit and funnel are included. An official storage cover is also available, as a separate purchase.

The DuroStar DS4000S versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroStar DS4000S compare to generators of similar power (between 2500 and 3500 W).
- At a weight of 92 pounds, the DuroStar DS4000S places in the expected weight range of the generators in the 2500-3500 rated wattage range. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Pulsar PGD40iSCO, standing at just 46 lbs.
- This generator, with its lowest possible noise rated at 69 dBA falls into the more noisy category, compared to other devices of a similar running wattage. If you are concerned with noise, check out the Honda EU3000iS, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, with a noise rating of just 50 dBA.
- The DS4000S provides one of the highest run time among similarly powerful devices, reaching up to 26 hours at 25% load.
- Even though run times are undoubtedly important, they are dependent on the fuel capacity to a large extent. For a more wholesome picture, we must take into consideration the fuel consumption of the generator. This generator, with an estimated fuel consumption of just 0.15 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load, is one of the more fuel efficient generators, for the previously mentioned wattage range. If not satisfied with the afore-mentioned fuel consumption, you may wish to check out the Energizer eZV3500P. With a fuel consumption of as little as 0.13 GPH, it is one of the most efficient generators currently on the market.

As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 2500-3500W generators, the DuroStar DS4000S is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
The bottom line
- Inexpensive
- Several accessories included
- High run time
- Fuel efficient
- Decent weight (92 lbs)
