Description
The DuroStar DS4000S 4,000 Watt Generator is designed for light duty emergency backup applications. This Generator has everything a Great Generator needs, but at a price that everybody wants.
Zoom on the DuroStar DS4000S
In short, the DuroStar DS4000S is a compact portable generator adequately designed for:
- RV travellers looking for even more independence
- People occasionally participating in outdoor fairs, festivals or events
- DIYers who wish to improve their efficiency with tools
- Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials
The subsequent sections will explore in detail its power characteristics, the diverse outlets it provides, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it offers.
Power & Run Time
Running on gasoline, the DuroStar DS4000S operates with a 208 cc (7 hp) DuroStar OHV 4-stroke engine, delivering 120V, with a running wattage of 3,300W and a peak wattage of 4,000W.
Rated for 69 dBA (less noisy than an office), the generator's starting mechanism relies on a classic hand-operated recoil starting mechanism.
Featuring a 4 gallons fuel tank, the DS4000S provides continuous power for up to 26 hours on a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.15 GPH).
As the DS4000S exhibits a THD of less than 12%, which is relatively high, it is best avoided for powering sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel features the following 3 AC outlets:
This DuroStar generator features an L5-30R receptacle, enabling an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. However, it is still not quite RV ready.
Portability
Measuring L23 x W18 x H17.5 in, the DuroStar DS4000S showcases a classic open frame layout, offering stability and simple maintenance access to components, while facilitating air circulation. The generator is designed for outdoor use and demanding environments.
At 92 lbs, the DS4000S is easily managed, ensuring it can be brought along wherever you need power. Furthermore, the generator's open frame construction allows for easy grabbing and movement.
Additionally, you can acquire the official wheel kit (opens in a new tab) to simplify the transportation of the DS4000S.
Features
The DS4000S and its control panel include a convenient voltmeter, which provides an easy way to monitor power output anytime. This feature comes handy when monitoring its status and activity.
In addition to this info, the generator's light indicator provides visual feedback when the oil level is too low.
A built-in fuel gauge allows for a quick, easy and convenient check of the fuel level of the generator.
From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, giving you a peace of mind during use.
Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the DuroStar DS4000S also is packed along with the following accessories: funnel and tool kit. An official storage cover is also available, as a separate purchase.

The DuroStar DS4000S versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroStar DS4000S compare to generators of similar power (between 2500 and 3500 W).
- At 92 lbs in dry weight, the DuroStar DS4000S fits well within the typical weight bracket for generators producing 2500 to 3500 rated watts. If weight is an important consideration for you, the Pulsar PGD40iSCO stands out as one of the top contenders in this power category, with a dry weight of 46 pounds.
- If compared to generators capable of producing a similar running wattage, this generator with a lowest emitted noise of 69 dBA can be considered somewhat noisy. If you’d prefer a less noisy device, one of the most quiet devices, which share the same power range with this one, is the Honda EU3000iS, whose lowest noise levels reach just 50 dBA.
- With up to 26 hours of runtime at 25% load, the DS4000S provides a one of the highest run times when compared to similarly powerful products.
- The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. Among generators of similar power, this generator stands out with a better fuel efficiency than most, with consumption rates around 0.15 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load. To prioritize fuel savings, we advise considering the Energizer eZV3500P, which stands out for its gasoline efficiency, consuming just 0.13 gallons per hour.
The bottom line
- High run time
- Fuel efficient
- Decent weight (92 lbs)
- No electric start
- On the noisy side (69 dBA)
