Description

The DS13000X is the largest and most powerful gasoline generator in the X Series, with 13,000 peak watts and 10,500 running watts.

Zoom on the DuroStar DS13000X

In a nutshell, the DuroStar DS13000X is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment.

The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, the extra features it benefits from, and any relevant emission compliance details.

Power & Run Time

The DuroStar DS13000X in use

The DuroStar DS13000X

The DuroStar DS13000X's engine, 500 cc OHV 4-stroke, fueled by gasoline, can deliver 120/240V. It provides a running wattage of 10,500W and reaches a peak wattage of 13,000W.

Enjoying a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a shower), this generator can be started thanks to a simple traditional pull-start mechanism, but also to a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included).

With a fuel capacity of 8.3 gallons, the DS13000X may run for around 8.5 hours at 50% load with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.98 GPH).

As the DS13000X has a relatively high THD (<12%), it is not recommended to use it to power sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel includes the following 7 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

This DuroStar generator isn't quite RV Ready, but it features an L5-30R receptacle, allowing a simple RV connection through an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, due to the featured twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the DS13000X is transfer switch ready: you may connect it to a breaker box to power your household during a power outage.

Portability

The design of the DuroStar DS13000X is a typical, open frame, with the dimensions of L30 x W29 x H26 in, offering support and stability and enabling the possibility of raising it above ground level. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.

Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 240 lbs make it incredibly difficult to manually lift and transport. Nevertheless, it can still be moved quite conveniently with the help of its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle, once it is placed on the ground.

Features

The DS13000X's control panel

To help you monitor the DS13000X's status and activity, its control panel is equipped with a convenient meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours.

In addition to this info, a light indicator shows you if its oil levels are insufficient.

Thanks to a built-in fuel gauge, the generator allows you to quickly, conveniently and easily check the gas level at a glance.

From a security standpoint, the product offers an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), allowing you to use it with a peace of mind.

The DS13000X also benefits from DuroStar’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.

Besides the classic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, the DuroStar DS13000X also comes with some accessories: funnel and tool kit are included.

Emissions

The DuroStar DS13000X is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Thus, selling and purchasing this generator is allowed in each of the 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, making it usable in forested areas.

The DuroStar DS13000X versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroStar DS13000X compare to generators of similar power (between 10000 and 11000 W).

  • As for its weight, the DuroStar DS13000X weighs only 240 pounds, making it one of the lighter generators in the 10000-11000 rated wattage category. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the A-iPower SUA13000EFI, standing at just 218 lbs.
  • The generator can be considered average in its noise for its power category, as it is rated at 74 dBA. If you’d prefer a less noisy device, one of the most quiet devices, which share the same power range with this one, is the A-iPower SUA13000EFI, whose lowest noise levels reach just 69 dBA.
  • As for its autonomy, the DS13000X, with an autonomy of around 8.5 hours at a 50% load, is placed on the low end among the generators of its kind. Concerning the run times, one of the several devices with a comparable output, offering the highest autonomy, is the Powerhorse 13000ES, which is able to run for around 15 hours.
  • While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank's capacity and thus, doesn't say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. This generator has an average fuel consumption among comparably powerful devices, as it reaches 0.98 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load. If you wish to acquire one of the most gasoline efficient products of this power range, the A-iPower SUA13000EFI, with a fuel consumption of 0.78 GPH could be in your good books.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 10000-11000W generators, the DuroStar DS13000X is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
