Zoom on the DuroStar DS13000MXT
In a few words, the DuroStar DS13000MXT is a powerful portable generator perfectly suited for:
- Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure
- Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures

Over the following sections, you'll uncover its power characteristics, the selection of outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it includes.
Power & Run Time
The DuroStar DS13000MXT delivers 120/240V and boasts with a tri-fuel technology enabling it to utilize gasoline, propane, or natural gas. When powered by gasoline, it achieves a running wattage of 10,500W and a peak wattage of 13,000W. Upon using propane, it gains 10,000 rated watts and 12,500 peak watts. Its operation with natural gas provides 9,000W of rated wattage and 11,250W of starting wattage.
The generator is rated for a noise of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a dishwasher). Its starting mechanisms include a conventional pull-start mechanism and a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included). To add further convenience, the DS13000MXT can be remotely started (key fob included).
In terms of its run time capability, the DS13000MXT, furnished with a 8.3 gallons fuel tank, can maintain operations for around 8.5 hours at 50% load on a full tank of gasoline (with fuel consumption averaging 0.98 gallons per hour). It also provides around 3.3 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.42 GPH) of operation with propane.
Outlets
The control panel includes the following 6 AC outlets:
With its 14-50R outlet, this DuroStar unit is RV-ready for owners with a 50-amp service in their RVs. In addition, because the DS13000MXT is equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it can power your home during a power outage, as it can be easily connected to your breaker box to power your household.
Portability
Measuring L30.5 x W27.3 x H26 in, the classic open frame construction of the DuroStar DS13000MXT provides stability while enabling convenient maintenance access to components and adequate air cooling. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.
While weighing 211 lbs, the generator is classified as 'portable,' indicating its mobility, albeit its heftiness may limit portability in specific situations. Nonetheless, the limited maneuverability is compensated for by utilizing its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle, which facilitates shifting once the generator is set on the ground.
Features
The control panel of the DS13000MXT is equipped with a convenient meter, displaying voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours information, aiding in monitoring its status and activity.
In addition to this info, a light indicator on the device will notify you if its oil levels are insufficient.
A built-in fuel gauge allows for a quick, easy and convenient check of the fuel level of the generator.
Security-wise, this product benefits from an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.
The DS13000MXT also benefits from DuroStar’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.
Apart from the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to facilitate setup, the DuroStar DS13000MXT features extra accessories: funnel, propane hose, tool kit, key fob, natural gas hose with NPT adapter and battery charger.

The DuroStar DS13000MXT versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroStar DS13000MXT compare to multi-fuel generators of similar power (between 10000 and 11000 W).
- As far as its dry weight is concerned, the DuroStar DS13000MXT weighs just 211 pounds and thus, it is one of the lighter 10000 to 11000 rated wattage multi-fuel generators. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the Genmax GM12000XiT, with a dry weight of just 194 pounds.
- Because this generator emits noise as low as 74 dBA, it can be considered to have a pretty average expected noise rating for a device of its power. If noise emissions are one of your priorities, you may want to take a look at the Genmax GM12500iET. It's one of the quietest options among generators of similar power, rated at 62 dBA.
- Concerning its runtime, the DS13000MXT provides around 8.5 hours at a 50% load, indicating that it falls on the lower side compared to other generators of its type and power range. If you wish to prioritize autonomy, the DuroStar DS14000iX shines as one of the top contenders, offering one of the highest run times among generators with similar power output, totaling around 12.5 hours.
- While run time matters, it's heavily influenced by the fuel tank's capacity. Hence, it's important to consider fuel efficiency alongside. The generator burns fuel at a rate of around 0.98 GPH when running at a 50% load, which is consistent with the average fuel usage of models of comparable power output. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.85 GPH, the DuroStar DS14000iX is a device you could look out for.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 10000-11000W multi-fuel generators, the DuroStar DS13000MXT is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
