Description

Zoom on the DuroStar DS13000MX

In short, the DuroStar DS13000MX is a powerful portable generator adequately designed for:

  • Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure
  • Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials
  • RV travellers looking for even more independence

In the forthcoming sections, you'll delve into its power characteristics, the various outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the additional features it boasts.

Power & Run Time

The DuroStar DS13000MX in use

The DuroStar DS13000MX

Thanks to its dual-fuel technology, the DuroStar DS13000MX provides a 120/240V output and offers both versatility and power. When utilizing gasoline, it delivers a running wattage of 10,500W and a starting wattage of 13,000W. Alternatively, when operating on propane, it provides 9,975 running watts and 12,350 starting watts.

The generator features a simple traditional pull-start mechanism and also an easy-to-use and reliable electric starter (battery included). It is rated for a noise of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a shower). Additionally, the DS13000MX may be remotely started, enhancing user convenience (key fob included).

Regarding its running time, the DS13000MX, with a 8.3 gallons fuel capacity, can operate for around 8.5 hours at 50% load with a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.98 GPH). When using propane, it can run for around 6.5 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.72 GPH).

As the DS13000MX exhibits a THD of less than 12%, which is relatively high, it is best avoided for powering sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel features the upcoming 6 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

With its 14-50R outlet, this DuroStar unit is RV-ready for owners with a 50-amp service in their RVs. In addition, since it boasts a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the DS13000MX is engineered to be transfer switch ready, ensuring easy integration with your breaker box to provide backup power to your home during outages.

Portability

Measuring L29.8 x W27.5 x H25.8 in, the classic open frame construction of the DuroStar DS13000MX provides stability while enabling convenient maintenance access to components and adequate air cooling. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.

Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 209 pounds. Nevertheless, thanks to its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.

Features

The DS13000MX's control panel

The control panel of the DS13000MX includes a convenient meter, showing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours metrics, helpful for the monitoring of its status and activity.

In addition to this info, the device’s light indicator will display if the oil level is too low.

Benefiting from its built-in fuel gauge, the generator allows for easy and immediate gas level inspections.

Security-wise, this product benefits from an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.

The DS13000MX also benefits from DuroStar’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.

In addition to the traditional documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to help you get started promptly, the DuroStar DS13000MX also includes several accessories: battery charger, key fob, funnel, tool kit and propane hose.

The DuroStar DS13000MX versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroStar DS13000MX compare to generators of similar power (between 10000 and 11000 W).

  • As for its weight, the DuroStar DS13000MX weighs only 209 pounds, making it one of the lightest generators in the 10000-11000 rated wattage category.
  • This generator has a somewhat average expected noise for its power range, rated at 74 dBA. If you'd like a less noisy alternative, the A-iPower SUA13000EFI is a strong contender. It boasts a noise rating of 69 dBA, placing it among the quietest generators in its power category.
  • As for its runtime, the DS13000MX runs for around 8.5 hours at a 50% load, placing it towards the low end among comparable products. If concerned with autonomy, one of the products of a comparable power output, which offers the highest run time, is the Powerhorse 13000ES, boasting with around 15 hours.
  • Run time is crucial, but it heavily relies on the fuel tank's capacity. Thus, considering fuel efficiency alongside is essential. At a 50% load, the generator consumes an estimated 0.98 gallons of gasoline per hour, falling within the average consumption range of units with similar output. If fuel consumption is your top priority, we suggest to check out the A-iPower SUA13000EFI, which has a fuel consumption of only 0.78 GPH and thus, is one of the most efficient devices in our database.
