Description

The all-new DuroStar DS13000E is a workhorse powered by a 500cc OHV Engine. With 10,500 watts of running power and the ability to surge up to 13,000 watts, this generator can power household essentials such as lights, small and large appliances, and your home's central A/C system.

Zoom on the DuroStar DS13000E

In summary, the DuroStar DS13000E is a powerful portable generator especially useful for professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working.

The subsequent sections will explore in detail its power characteristics, the diverse outlets it provides, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it offers.

Power & Run Time

The DuroStar DS13000E in use

The DuroStar DS13000E

The DuroStar DS13000E's engine, 500 cc (18 hp) DuroStar OHV 4-stroke, fueled by gasoline, can deliver 120/240V. It provides a running wattage of 10,500W and reaches a peak wattage of 13,000W.

The generator features a classic hand-operated recoil starting mechanism and also a no-fuss and convenient electric starter (battery included). It is rated for a noise of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a shower).

The DS13000E boasts a fuel tank capable of holding 8.3 gallons, allowing it to run continuously for around 8 hours at 50% load (with fuel usage averaging around 1.04 gallons per hour).

Given the DS13000E's relatively high Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of less than 12%, it is advisable to avoid using it to power sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel is equipped with the following 5 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

Moreover, it comes equipped with 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A (cigarette lighter style) receptacle making battery charging a breeze.

Even though this DuroStar generator isn't quite RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle allows an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, as it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the DS13000E is transfer switch ready: in case of a power outage, you will be easily able to connect it to a breaker box and power your household.

Portability

Measuring L29 x W30 x H26 in, the classic open frame build of the DuroStar DS13000E delivers stability and easy maintenance access to components, facilitating air circulation. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.

Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 236 pounds. Still, once it is on the ground, its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle can easily solve the issue of low mobility and allow for easy relocation of the device.

Features

The DS13000E's control panel

The control panel of the DS13000E includes a convenient meter, offering voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours readings, helpful for the monitoring of its status and activity.

In addition to this info, a light indicator on the device will signal if its oil levels are insufficient.

The built-in fuel gauge of the generator ensures simple and quick gas level assessments.

As far as security is concerned, the generator comes with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), providing peace of mind during use.

With the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), letting you start the generator quickly, the DuroStar DS13000E also comes with several accessories, including: tool kit and funnel.

The DuroStar DS13000E versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroStar DS13000E compare to generators of similar power (between 10000 and 11000 W).

  • Regarding its weight, the DuroStar DS13000E only weighs in at 236 pounds, which means it's one of the lighter generators in the 10000-11000 rated wattage range. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the DuroStar DS13000MX, standing at just 209 lbs.
  • The generator's noise output, rated at 74 dBA, falls within the average range expected for devices in its power range. If you’d prefer a less noisy device, one of the most quiet devices, which share the same power range with this one, is the A-iPower SUA13000EFI, whose lowest noise levels reach just 69 dBA.
  • Regarding its autonomy, the DS13000E can run for around 8 hours at a 50% load, aligning it with the lower performers in its power range. If extended autonomy is what matters most to you, the Powerhorse 13000ES could be an excellent choice, offering one of the longest run times among units in its power category, reaching around 15 hours.
  • Run time is crucial, but it heavily relies on the fuel tank's capacity. Thus, considering fuel efficiency alongside is essential. Compared to its peers, this generator is not exactly fuel-efficient, compared to similarly powerful devices, with an estimated fuel consumption of 1.04 GPH at a 50% load. To prioritize fuel savings, we advise considering the A-iPower SUA13000EFI, which stands out for its gasoline efficiency, consuming just 0.78 gallons per hour.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 10000-11000W generators, the DuroStar DS13000E is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
