Description
Zoom on the DuroStar DS13000DX
In a nutshell, the DuroStar DS13000DX is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment.
The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, the extra features it benefits from, and any relevant emission compliance details.
Power & Run Time
Thanks to its dual-fuel technology, the DuroStar DS13000DX delivers 120/240V and offers power and versatility. When gasoline-powered, it benefits from a running wattage of 10,500W and a peak wattage of 13,000W. When propane-powered, it has 9,975 rated watts and 12,350 peak watts.
The generator is rated for a noise of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a shower). Its starting mechanisms include a conventional pull-start mechanism and a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included).
The DS13000DX, with a fuel capacity of 8.3 gallons, reaches a run time of around 8.5 hours at 50% load utilizing gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.98 GPH). Alternatively, it can reach a run time of around 3.2 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.47 GPH) with propane.
As the DS13000DX has a relatively high THD (<12%), it is not recommended to use it to power sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel features the upcoming 7 AC outlets:
This DuroStar generator isn't quite RV Ready, but it features an L5-30R receptacle, allowing a simple RV connection through an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, since the DS13000DX bears a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it is easily connectible to a breaker box and can power your home in case of a power outage.
Portability
With its dimensions of L30 x W29 x H26 in, the conventional, open frame design of the DuroStar DS13000DX offers stability and allows the generator to be raised above ground level. The generator is designed for ideal use outdoors and in rough environments.
Since the generator weighs 240 lbs, it will be incredibly difficult to manually lift it and transport it, even though it is technically considered to 'be portable' (in the sense that it is movable). However, this lack of maneuverability is compensated by its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle, with which you can conveniently shift it, once it's on the ground.
Features
The control panel of the DS13000DX includes a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours, helpful for the monitoring of its status and activity.
In addition to this info, a light indicator serves to show you when its oil levels are insufficient.
The generator includes a built-in fuel gauge, a quick, easy and convenient method of checking the device’s gas level.
From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, giving you a peace of mind during use.
The DS13000DX also benefits from DuroStar’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.
While the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), helpful for starting the device promptly, come with the DuroStar DS13000DX, the following accessories are also included: tool kit, funnel and propane hose.
Emissions
The DuroStar DS13000DX is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Therefore, its sale and purchase are permitted in all of the 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor and therefore, can be used in forested areas.

The DuroStar DS13000DX versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroStar DS13000DX compare to generators of similar power (between 10000 and 11000 W).
- Having a dry weight of 240 lbs, the DuroStar DS13000DX belongs in the expected weight range for generators which produce 10000 to 11000 rated watts. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the A-iPower SUA13000EFI, with a dry weight of just 218 pounds.
- Because this generator emits noise as low as 74 dBA, it can be considered to have a pretty average expected noise rating for a device of its power. For those who are looking for a less noisy device, we suggest the A-iPower SUA13000EFI. With just 69 dBA, it is one of the most quiet devices in this power range.
- Autonomy-wise, with around 8.5 hours on a full tank at a 50% load, the DS13000DX is on the low end when compared to other generators of a similar power output. If autonomy is your priority, one of the devices of a similar power output with the highest run time is the Powerhorse 13000ES, reaching around 15 hours.
- The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. This generator has an estimated fuel consumption of roughly 0.98 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load, rendering it somewhat average compared to devices of a similar output. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.78 GPH, the A-iPower SUA13000EFI is a device you could look out for.
Price comparison
As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 10000-11000W generators, the DuroStar DS13000DX is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
