Description

Powerful and versatile, the DS12000EH is ready for anything. Perfect for home backup, the dual fuel option doubles fuel life when running propane, making this unit an effective, low-maintenance solution for your home standby needs. Producing over 12,000 watts you can rest assured you will stay powered through any storm.

Zoom on the DuroStar DS12000EH

In summary, the DuroStar DS12000EH is a powerful portable generator especially useful for:

  • Small homeowners in search of a full power backup solution
  • Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working

In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device, along with its emission compliance information.

Power & Run Time

The DuroStar DS12000EH in use

The DuroStar DS12000EH

Thanks to its dual-fuel technology, the DuroStar DS12000EH delivers 120/240V and offers power and versatility. When gasoline-powered, it benefits from a running wattage of 9,500W and a peak wattage of 12,000W. When propane-powered, it has 8,750 rated watts and 10,500 peak watts.

The generator features a simple traditional pull-start mechanism and also a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included). It is rated for a noise of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a vacuum cleaner).

With a fuel capacity of 8.3 gallons, the DS12000EH can operate for up to 19 hours using gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.44 GPH), or for up to 7 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.67 GPH) using propane.

Since the DS12000EH has a somewhat high THD (<12%), it is advisable to not use it for the powering of sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel provides the upcoming 5 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

In addition, it provides 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A output with which you may charge your batteries with ease.

This DuroStar generator features an L5-30R receptacle, enabling an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. However, it is still not quite RV ready. Besides, since the DS12000EH bears a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it is easily connectible to a breaker box and can power your home in case of a power outage.

Portability

The DuroStar DS12000EH has the following dimensions: L29 x W30 x H26 in. In combination with its conventional, open frame design, they provide support and allow the generator to be raised above ground level. The device has been designed for tough environments and demanding outdoor use.

Since the generator weighs 224 lbs, it will be incredibly difficult to manually lift it and transport it, even though it is technically considered to 'be portable' (in the sense that it is movable). Still, once it is on the ground, its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle can easily solve the issue of low mobility and allow for easy relocation of the device.

Features

The DS12000EH's control panel

To help you monitor the DS12000EH's status and activity, its control panel is equipped with a handy voltmeter that allows you to easily monitor power output anytime.

In addition to this info, a light indicator shows you if the oil level is too low.

The fuel level of the generator can be determined quickly, easily, and conveniently with the help of its built-in fuel gauge.

From a security standpoint, the product offers an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), allowing you to use it with a peace of mind.

Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the DuroStar DS12000EH also is packed along with the following accessories: tool kit, propane hose, battery charging cables and funnel. An official storage cover is also available, as a separate purchase.

Emissions

The DuroStar DS12000EH is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Therefore, its sale and purchase are permitted in all of the 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, making it usable in forested areas.

The DuroStar DS12000EH versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroStar DS12000EH compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 9000 and 10000 W).

  • With its weight of 224 lbs, the DuroStar DS12000EH is one of the heavier dual fuel generators in the 9000-10000 rated wattage category. If weight is your top priority, one of the champions in this power category is the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc, weighing just 187.4 pounds.
  • As this generator can emit noise as low as 74 dBA, it finds itself in the average expected noise for this kind of power. If you’d prefer a less noisy device, one of the most quiet devices, which share the same power range with this one, is the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc, whose lowest noise levels reach just 64 dBA.
  • Regarding its autonomy, the autonomy of the DS12000EH, reaching around 8 hours at a 50% load, can be considered as low end, compared to other dual fuel products of a roughly equal output. If autonomy is your priority, one of the devices of a similar power output with the highest run time is the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc, reaching around 12 hours.
  • Autonomy holds its importance, however, it is largely dependent on the generator’s fuel capacity and so, it is nonsensible to discuss it without mentioning fuel efficiency as well. This generator is somewhat less fuel efficient than devices of comparable output: its estimated fuel consumption reaches 1.04 GPH at a 50% load. If fuel consumption is your top priority, we suggest to check out the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc, which has a fuel consumption of only 0.66 GPH and thus, is one of the most efficient devices in our database.
According to our stats, the following comparison is pretty popular: DuroStar DS12000EH vs DuroMax XP12000EH.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 9000-10000W dual fuel generators, the DuroStar DS12000EH is on the cheap side of the price range.

It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
