Description
Zoom on the DuroStar DS11000DX
In summary, the DuroStar DS11000DX is a powerful portable generator especially useful for:
- Prudent homeowners who want a backup power source in case of a power outage
- Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed, including its emission compliance information.
Power & Run Time
With its dual-fuel technology, the powerful and versatile DuroStar DS11000DX provides an output of 120/240V. While gasoline-powered, it gives a running wattage of 9,000W along with a peak wattage of 11,000W. While propane-powered, it provides 8,550 rated watts and 10,450 starting watts.
The generator features a simple traditional pull-start mechanism and also a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). It is rated for a noise of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a shower).
The running time of the DS11000DX, with its 8.3 gallons fuel capacity, can reach up to 19 hours on a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.44 GPH). With propane, it can reach up to 7 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.67 GPH).
The DS11000DX is unsuitable for the powering of sensitive electronic devices due to its relatively high THD (<12%).
Outlets
The control panel includes the following 7 AC outlets:
Even if this DuroStar generator isn't quite RV Ready, it still allows for an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor, thanks to its L5-30R receptacle. Besides, as the DS11000DX holds a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: you'll easily be able to connect it to your breaker box to power your home during a power outage.
Portability
The dimensions of the DuroStar DS11000DX, which are L29 x W30 x H26 in, and its typical, open frame design provides stability and enables the generator to be raised above ground level. The device has been designed for tough environments and demanding outdoor use.
As the generator's weight is 230 pounds, manually moving it or transporting it may be challenging, despite the fact that it is technically considered 'portable' (movable). Nevertheless, it can still be moved quite conveniently with the help of its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle, once it is placed on the ground.
Features
To help you monitor the DS11000DX's status and activity, its control panel is equipped with a convenient meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours.
In addition to this info, a light indicator allows you to instantly see if its oil levels are insufficient.
The fuel level of the generator can be determined quickly, easily, and conveniently with the help of its built-in fuel gauge.
Security-wise, this product benefits from an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.
The DS11000DX also benefits from DuroStar’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.
Besides the classic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, the DuroStar DS11000DX also comes with some accessories: tool kit, propane hose and funnel are included.
Emissions
The DuroStar DS11000DX is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. It can therefore be sold and purchased in all 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor and therefore, can be used in forested areas.

The DuroStar DS11000DX versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroStar DS11000DX compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 8500 and 9500 W).
- With its weight of 230 lbs, the DuroStar DS11000DX is one of the heavier dual fuel generators in the 8500-9500 rated wattage category. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Rainier R12000DF, standing at just 196 lbs.
- The generator can be considered average in its noise for its type and power category, as it is rated at 74 dBA. If noise emissions are important to you, one of the least noisy generators of this power range is the A-iPower SUA12000ED with only 69 dBA.
- Thanks to an impressive running time of up to 19 hours at 25% load, the DS11000DX benefits from a higher run time than many dual fuel generators of a similar output. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the DuroMax XP10000DX, with up to 22 hours.
- While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank’s capacity and thus, doesn’t say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. Standing at an estimated 0.44 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 25% load, this generator is somewhat average in this area compared to other devices, within the aforementioned wattage range. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.38 GPH, the DuroMax XP10000DX is a device you could look out for.
Price comparison
As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 8500-9500W dual fuel generators, the DuroStar DS11000DX is on the expensive side of the price range.
While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.
The bottom line
- Dual Fuel
- CO Alert technology
- Several accessories included
- GFCI Outlets
- 4 different AC outlet types
- Electric start
- High run time
- Acceptable noise (74 dBA)
- Decent fuel efficiency
- On the expensive side
- No remote start
- On the heavy side (230 lbs)
