Zoom on the DuroStar DS11000DX
In summary, the DuroStar DS11000DX is a powerful portable generator especially useful for:
- Homeowners who wish to power almost all appliances in their house under any circumstances
- Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment
The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, the extra features it benefits from, and any relevant emission compliance details.
Power & Run Time
Thanks to its dual-fuel technology, the DuroStar DS11000DX delivers 120/240V and offers power and versatility. When gasoline-powered, it benefits from a running wattage of 9,000W and a peak wattage of 11,000W. When propane-powered, it has 8,550 rated watts and 10,450 peak watts.
With a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a vacuum cleaner), the generator features a conventional pull-start mechanism, but also a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included).
As for its running time, the DS11000DX, along with its 8.3 gallons fuel capacity, can run for around 8.8 hours at 50% load with a full tank filled with gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.94 GPH). If propane is used, it can operate for around 3.6 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.31 GPH).
The quite high THD (<12%) of the DS11000DX makes it unsuitable for powering sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel includes the following 7 AC outlets:
While this DuroStar generator is not RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle can be used for a simple RV connection with an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, since the DS11000DX bears a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it is easily connectible to a breaker box and can power your home in case of a power outage.
Portability
The dimensions of the DuroStar DS11000DX, which are L29 x W30 x H26 in, and its typical, open frame design provides stability and enables the generator to be raised above ground level. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.
Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 230 lbs make it incredibly difficult to manually lift and transport. Still, once it is on the ground, its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle can easily solve the issue of low mobility and allow for easy relocation of the device.
Features
The DS11000DX's status and activity may be monitored conveniently via the control panel, as it features a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours.
In addition to this info, when its oil levels are insufficient, you will be informed by the featured light indicator.
The fuel level of the generator can be determined quickly, easily, and conveniently with the help of its built-in fuel gauge.
From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), giving you a peace of mind during use.
The DS11000DX also benefits from DuroStar’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes. It’s a welcomed additional security feature, but don’t forget to always take your generator outside (opens in a new tab).
While the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), helpful for starting the device promptly, come with the DuroStar DS11000DX, the following accessories are also included: tool kit, propane hose and funnel.
Emissions
The DuroStar DS11000DX is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Therefore, its sale and purchase are permitted in all of the 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, which makes it suitable for use in forested areas.

The DuroStar DS11000DX versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroStar DS11000DX compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 8500 and 9500 W).
- A weight of 230 lbs makes the DuroStar DS11000DX one of the heavier dual fuel devices in the 8500-9500 rated wattage range. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the Pulsar PG12000B, with a dry weight of just 205 pounds.
- The generator can be considered average in its noise for its type and power category, as it is rated at 74 dBA. If you are concerned with noise, check out the A-iPower SUA12000ED, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, with a noise rating of just 69 dBA.
- As far as autonomy is concerned, providing around 8.8 hours of runtime with a full tank at a 50% load, the DS11000DX falls into the low end in comparison with other dual fuel devices of a comparable power output. Furthermore, considering the run times, one of the generators which have a roughly same power output, with the highest autonomy, is the Westinghouse WGen9500DF, as it provides around 12 hours.
- Autonomy holds its importance, however, it is largely dependent on the generator’s fuel capacity and so, it is nonsensible to discuss it without mentioning fuel efficiency as well. This generator is rather wasteful, compared to other devices within the aforementioned output range, when it comes to gasoline consumption, as it reaches roughly 0.94 GPH at a 50% load. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the Westinghouse WGen9500DF, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.55 GPH, may be the right generator for you.
Price comparison
As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 8500-9500W dual fuel generators, the DuroStar DS11000DX is on the expensive side of the price range.
While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.
The bottom line
- CO Alert technology
- Several accessories included
- GFCI Outlets
- Electric start
- Dual Fuel
- Acceptable noise (74 dBA)
- On the expensive side
- No remote start
- On the heavy side (230 lbs)
- Relatively low run time
- Low fuel efficiency
