Zoom on the DuroMax XP9000iH
In a nutshell, the DuroMax XP9000iH is a powerful portable inverter generator mostly geared towards:
- Food truck owners who want to ensure that their business is fully self-contained and does not rely on potentially unreliable external power
- Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials
- Camping and tailgating hobbyists looking for a portable power source
The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, the extra features it benefits from, and any relevant emission compliance details.
Power & Run Time
The dual-fuel technology of the DuroMax XP9000iH allows for an output of 120/240V and provides superb power and versatility. If gasoline-powered, the device provides a running wattage of 7600W and a starting wattage of 9000W. If propane-powered, it gives 7200 rated watts and 8550 starting watts. In addition, as it is parallel capable (XP9000iH-PK parallel kit (opens in a new tab) not included), this power can be doubled when linked to another similar or compatible unit.
With a noise rating of 68 dBA (less noisy than an office), the inverter generator features a conventional pull-start mechanism, but also a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included). The XP9000iH can also be remotely started, offering further convenience (key fob included).
The XP9000iH, with a fuel capacity of 6.7 gallons, reaches a run time of around 11 hours at 50% load utilizing gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.61 GPH). Alternatively, it can reach a run time of around 4.5 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.04 GPH) with propane.
Sensitive electronics can be safely plugged in the AC outlets, as the XP9000iH produces a clean sine wave, with a <5% Total Harmonic Disruption (THD).
The control panel features the following 6 AC outlets:
In addition, it provides 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (1 x USB-A and 1 x USB-C) with which you may charge electronics, for example mobile phones or tablets, conveniently.
Even if this DuroMax generator isn't quite RV Ready, it still allows for an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor, thanks to its L5-30R receptacle. Besides, since the XP9000iH bears a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it is easily connectible to a breaker box and can power your home in case of a power outage.
As the DuroMax XP9000iH is an inverter generator, its encased design (L27 x W21 x H25 in) offers more aesthetics than a conventional, open frame product. This type of design is the most modern and convenient way to recreationally generate power.
Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 237 lbs make it incredibly difficult to manually lift and transport. However, this lack of maneuverability is compensated by its set of 4 wheels and its folding handle, with which you can conveniently shift it, once it's on the ground.
Monitoring of the XP9000iH's status and activity is made possible by a digital data center, which provides information on the lifetime run hours, power output, frequency and voltage and is one of the features of its control panel.
In addition to this info, the light indicators show you if the generator is overloaded, the generator is ready and its oil levels are insufficient.
The inverter generator allows for a quick, easy and convenient assessment of its gas level, as it is equipped with a built-in fuel gauge.
As for its security measures, the device features an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), letting you use it with a peace of mind.
While the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), helpful for starting the device promptly, come with the DuroMax XP9000iH, the following accessories are also included: tool kit, battery charger, propane hose, funnel and key fob.
The DuroMax XP9000iH is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Thus, selling and purchasing this generator is allowed in each of the 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor and thus, may be used in forested areas.
The DuroMax XP9000iH versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP9000iH compare to generators of similar power (between 7500 and 8500 W).
- As its dry weight is 237 pounds, the DuroMax XP9000iH is one of the heavier of the products which can generate 7500 to 8500 running watts. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Dewalt DXGNR8000, standing at just 183 lbs.
- With a lowest possible noise of 68 dBA, this inverter generator places itself amongst the more quiet of the products delivering similar power. If you’d prefer a less noisy device, one of the most quiet devices, which share the same power range with this one, is the Predator 9500, whose lowest noise levels reach just 67 dBA.
- As the XP9000iH features an autonomy of around 11 hours at 50% load, it has a higher run time than an average generator of its power range. Furthermore, considering the run times, one of the generators which have a roughly same power output, with the highest autonomy, is the Champion 100416, as it provides around 12.5 hours.
- Autonomy holds its importance, however, it is largely dependent on the generator’s fuel capacity and so, it is nonsensible to discuss it without mentioning fuel efficiency as well. With an estimated gasoline consumption of 0.61 GPH (gallon per hour) at 50% load, this inverter generator is among the more fuel efficient of the products in the above-mentioned wattage range. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the Westinghouse WPro8500, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.55 GPH, may be the right generator for you.
As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 7500-8500W generators, the DuroMax XP9000iH is on the expensive side of the price range.
While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.
