Description

One of the largest inverters available on the market, the XP9000iH is excellent for home emergency backup or powering your jobsite. With clean power you can use this inverter with TV's, laptops, and other sensitive electronics.

Zoom on the DuroMax XP9000iH

In a nutshell, the DuroMax XP9000iH is a powerful portable inverter generator mostly geared towards:

  • Food van owners who know that just a short power outage could lose them hundreds of dollars
  • Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
  • Camping and tailgating hobbyists looking for a portable power source
  • Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working

The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, the extra features it benefits from, and any relevant emission compliance details.

Power & Run Time

The DuroMax XP9000iH in use

The DuroMax XP9000iH

The dual-fuel technology of the DuroMax XP9000iH allows for an output of 120/240V and provides superb power and versatility. If gasoline-powered, the device provides a running wattage of 7,600W and a starting wattage of 9,000W. If propane-powered, it gives 7,200 rated watts and 8,550 starting watts. The impressive running wattage makes this unit one of the biggest inverter generators currently on the market. In addition, the device is parallel capable (XP9000iH-PK parallel kit (opens in a new tab) not included) and thus, can be linked to a similar or compatible unit for added power.

DuroMax’s Switch On Demand technology allows you to switch from propane to gasoline or from gasoline to propane while the generator is running.

At a noise rating of 68 dBA (less noisy than an office), this inverter generator can be started via a simple traditional pull-start mechanism, or a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included). Moreover, to offer you even more convenience, the XP9000iH can also be remotely started (key fob included).

Regarding its running time, the XP9000iH, with a 6.9 gallons fuel capacity can operate for up to 20 hours with a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.35 GPH). When using propane, it can run for up to 9 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.52 GPH).

As the XP9000iH produces a clean sine wave, with a <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), sensitive electronics may be plugged in the AC outlets safely.

Outlets

The control panel features the upcoming 5 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

Additionally, it features 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (1 x USB-A and 1 x USB-C) allowing you to conveniently charge electronics such as mobile phones and tablets.

As it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the XP9000iH is transfer switch ready: in case of a power outage, you will be easily able to connect it to a breaker box and power your household. The unit also features an ATS plug, which makes it compatible with automatic transfer switches.

Portability

Since the DuroMax XP9000iH is an inverter generator, its closed design (L27 x W21 x H25 in) has an esthetical advantage over conventional, open frame devices. This modern design aims to provide an ideal power solution to recreational users.

While the generator is considered to be technically 'portable' (in the sense that you can move it), manually lifting and transporting it may be challenging, due to its high weight of 237 lbs. However, its challenging mobility is solved by its set of 4 wheels (⌀4.5") and its folding handle, which will ease its displacement, once it is on the floor.

Features

The XP9000iH's control panel

A digital data center, one of the features of the XP9000iH's control panel, gives you information on the lifetime run hours, frequency, voltage and power output, and thus, is helpful for the monitoring of its activity and status.

In addition to this info, the device’s light indicators will display if the oil level is too low, the generator is ready and the generator is on overload.

Thanks to a built-in fuel gauge, the inverter generator allows you to quickly, conveniently and easily check the gas level at a glance.

As far as security is concerned, the generator can be used with a peace of mind, as it features an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker).

The XP9000iH also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.

Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the DuroMax XP9000iH also is packed along with the following accessories: propane hose, tool kit, battery charger, funnel and key fob.

Emissions

The DuroMax XP9000iH is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Thus, selling and purchasing this generator is allowed in each of the 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, so it is adequate for use in forested areas.

The DuroMax XP9000iH versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP9000iH compare to generators of similar power (between 7500 and 8500 W).

  • Considering its dry weight of 237 pounds, the DuroMax XP9000iH is one of the heavier generators producing between 7500 and 8500 running watts. If weight matters to you, one of the champions in this power range is the Westinghouse ecoGen10000 with only 147.7 pounds.
  • At a lowest noise rating of 68 dBA, this inverter generator is one of the quieter devices of similar power. If noise emissions are one of your priorities, you may be interested in the Genmax GM9000iED, one of the least noisy generators similarly powerful as this one, rated for 62 dBA.
  • With a run time of up to 20 hours at 25% load, the XP9000iH has one of the higher run times, compared to its similarly powerful peers. Furthermore, considering the run times, one of the generators which have a roughly same power output, with the highest autonomy, is the DuroMax XP10000HX, as it provides up to 22 hours.
  • Run times are important, yet thanks to their dependence on the fuel capacity, they should be judged along with the fuel consumption of the device. This inverter generator can be considered as one of the most fuel efficient, due to its low estimated fuel consumption of only 0.35 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load, within the aforementioned wattage range.

Here's a list of the most popular specific comparisons:

Price comparison

As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 7500-8500W generators, the DuroMax XP9000iH is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
