  • Food truck owners who do not wish to see their business interrupted under any circumstances
  • Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials
  • Camping and tailgating buffs looking to enhance their experience

Power & Run Time

The DuroMax XP9000iH in use

The DuroMax XP9000iH

The dual-fuel technology of the DuroMax XP9000iH allows for an output of 120/240V and provides superb power and versatility. If gasoline-powered, the device provides a running wattage of 7,600W and a starting wattage of 9,000W. If propane-powered, it gives 7,200 rated watts and 8,550 starting watts. In addition, the device is parallel capable (XP9000iH-PK parallel kit (opens in a new tab) not included) and thus, can be linked to a similar or compatible unit for added power.

DuroMax’s Switch On Demand technology allows you to switch from propane to gasoline or from gasoline to propane while the generator is running.

At a noise rating of 68 dBA (less noisy than a normal conversation), this inverter generator can be started via a conventional pull-start mechanism, or a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included). To add further convenience, the XP9000iH can be remotely started (key fob included).

The XP9000iH, with a fuel capacity of 6.9 gallons, reaches a run time of up to 20 hours utilizing gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.35 GPH). Alternatively, it can reach a run time of up to 9 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.52 GPH) with propane.

The XP9000iH produces a clean sine wave: thanks to a <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), your sensitive electronics can be safely plugged in the AC outlets.

Outlets

The control panel provides the upcoming 5 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

Additionally, it features 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (1 x USB-A and 1 x USB-C) with which you may charge electronics, for example mobile phones or tablets, conveniently.

Since the XP9000iH bears a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it is easily connectible to a breaker box and can power your home in case of a power outage. The unit also features an ATS plug, which makes it compatible with automatic transfer switches.

Portability

As the DuroMax XP9000iH is an inverter generator, its encased design (L27 x W21 x H25 in) offers more aesthetics than a conventional, open frame product. This modern design aims to provide an ideal power solution to recreational users.

Since the generator weighs 237 lbs, it will be incredibly difficult to manually lift it and transport it, even though it is technically considered to 'be portable' (in the sense that it is movable). Still, once it is on the ground, its set of 4 wheels (⌀4.5") and its folding handle can easily solve the issue of low mobility and allow for easy relocation of the device.

Features

The XP9000iH's control panel

Monitoring of the XP9000iH's status and activity is made possible by a digital data center, which provides information on the voltage, lifetime run hours, power output and frequency and is one of the features of its control panel.

In addition to this info, the device’s light indicators will display if its oil levels are insufficient, the generator is ready and the generator is on overload.

The fuel level of the inverter generator can be determined quickly, easily, and conveniently with the help of its built-in fuel gauge.

Security-wise, this product benefits from an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.

The XP9000iH also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.

Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the DuroMax XP9000iH also is packed along with the following accessories: tool kit, propane hose, key fob, funnel and battery charger.

Emissions

The DuroMax XP9000iH is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Thus, selling and purchasing this generator is allowed in each of the 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, which makes it suitable for use in forested areas.

The DuroMax XP9000iH versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP9000iH compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 7500 and 8500 W).

  • With its weight of 237 lbs, the DuroMax XP9000iH is one of the heavier dual fuel generators in the 7500-8500 rated wattage category. If weight is your top priority, one of the champions in this power category is the Cummins Onan P9500df, weighing just 194 pounds.
  • As its lowest possible noise is rated at 68 dBA, this inverter generator qualifies as one of the more quiet of the products of similar type and power. If noise emissions are important to you, one of the least noisy generators of this power range is the Pulsar PGD95BiSCO with only 62 dBA.
  • Since the XP9000iH boasts with a run time of up to 20 hours at 25% load, it can be safely judged as a device of a higher run time than most dual fuel generators of a comparable output. Concerning the run times, one of the several devices with a comparable output, offering the highest autonomy, is the DuroMax XP10000DX, which is able to run for up to 22 hours.
  • While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank's capacity and thus, doesn't say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. This inverter generator can be considered as one of the most fuel efficient, due to its low estimated fuel consumption of only 0.35 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load, within the aforementioned wattage range.

Here's a list of the most popular specific comparisons:

Have powered my house on 2 occasions, one a more extended outage after a hurricane. Plus, I start it each quarter and never fails to crank. Very quiet too. My only complaints are that it is heavy (though the handle and wheels help) and the service port and location of service items are a bit frustrating.

    + PROS:
    • Electric start and remote
    • Very powerful
    • Dual fuel
    • Quiet
    • Data center

    • Weight

I do not recommend this generator. I’ve had two of them and they both failed. On the first one, the control panel failed and I had to bring it to a “local” repair shop which was hours away. It sat there for months waiting for parts when they finally decided to send me a new unit instead. Low and behold the new unit’s control panel failed as well. On top of that the propane valve failed too. I reached out to customer support and they told me to bring it in for repair again. At this point I don’t want another generator from this company, I will look elsewhere. Currently I am still waiting to hear back from customer support to see if I can even return it.

    + PROS:
    • Lots of power
    - CONS:
    • Components break often leading to time consuming repairs.

Excellent generator! I run my whole house on this with no problems. 3400 square ft home. I have a quick connect off my 1000 gallon propane tank so it’s really simple to run. The price has dropped almost 500.00 since I bought mine, probably going to get another one and the parallel kit. Also more fuel efficient than advertised. Ran several test on both gas and propane, I found it to be almost 20% higher efficiency on both fuels than advertised, nice bonus. Highly recommend this unit. Have had multiple generators over the years and this seems the best for us. Lose power a lot and we’re very isolated so being able to hook to 1000 gallon tank is great, no running out for gas or filling 20 pounders in power outage. Have run it about 90 hours since purchasing this in 2021.Hope this helps.

    + PROS:
    • Quite, great fuel consumption, remote start, simple to use and great information usage panel.
    - CONS:
    • The hour meter doesn't continue, it restarts at zero hours every time you start it making it harder to keep track of hours on unit. Have a note book nearby for this. Changing the oil should be a little easier.
