Zoom on the DuroMax XP9000iH

To sum up, the DuroMax XP9000iH is a powerful portable inverter generator tailored for:

  • Food van owners who know that just a short power outage could lose them hundreds of dollars
  • Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials
  • Camping and tailgating hobbyists looking for a portable power source

The subsequent sections will explore in detail its power characteristics, the diverse outlets it provides, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it offers.

Power & Run Time

The DuroMax XP9000iH in use

The DuroMax XP9000iH

Thanks to its dual-fuel technology, the DuroMax XP9000iH provides a 120/240V output and offers both versatility and power. When utilizing gasoline, it delivers a running wattage of 7,600W and a starting wattage of 9,000W. Alternatively, when operating on propane, it provides 7,200 running watts and 8,550 starting watts. In addition, the parallel capability (XP9000iH-PK parallel kit not included) empowers increasing of power output when linked to another similar or compatible unit, ensuring expanded energy capacity and reliability for various applications.

DuroMax’s Switch On Demand technology allows you to switch from propane to gasoline or from gasoline to propane while the generator is running.

At a noise rating of 68 dBA (less noisy than a normal conversation), this inverter generator provides the choice between a simple traditional pull-start mechanism or a no-fuss and convenient electric starter (battery included) for starting. To add further convenience, the XP9000iH can be remotely started (key fob included).

In terms of run time, the XP9000iH, boasting a 6.9 gallons fuel tank, can run for up to 20 hours on a full tank of gasoline (with fuel consumption averaging 0.35 gallons per hour). Additionally, it provides up to 9 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.52 GPH) of operation with propane.

The <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of the XP9000iH ensures a clean sine wave output, providing a secure power source for your sensitive electronics through its AC outlets.

Outlets

The control panel includes the following 5 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

Moreover, it comes equipped with 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (1 x USB-A and 1 x USB-C) enabling convenient charging of devices like mobile phones and tablets.

Since the XP9000iH bears a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it is easily connectible to a breaker box and can power your home in case of a power outage. The unit also features an ATS plug, which makes it compatible with automatic transfer switches.

Portability

As the DuroMax XP9000iH is an inverter generator, its encased design (L27 x W21 x H25 in) offers more aesthetics than a conventional, open frame product. The featured design follows the latest trends and is ideal for easy and recreational use.

While the generator is considered to be technically 'portable' (in the sense that you can move it), manually lifting and transporting it may be challenging, due to its high weight of 237 lbs. Despite the restricted maneuverability, its set of 4 wheels (⌀4.5") and its folding handle provides a solution, allowing for convenient shifting once the generator is positioned on the ground.

Features

The XP9000iH's control panel

A digital data center, one of the features of the XP9000iH's control panel, gives you information on the frequency, lifetime run hours, power output and voltage, and thus, is helpful for the monitoring of its activity and status.

In addition to this info, the generator's light indicators provide visual feedback when the oil level is too low, the generator is on overload and the generator is ready.

The inverter generator allows for a quick, easy and convenient assessment of its gas level, as it is equipped with a built-in fuel gauge.

From a security standpoint, the generator is furnished with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), ensuring peace of mind during operation.

The XP9000iH also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.

Apart from the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to facilitate setup, the DuroMax XP9000iH features extra accessories: battery charger, propane hose, funnel, tool kit and key fob.

The DuroMax XP9000iH versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP9000iH compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 7500 and 8500 W).

  • With a weight of 237 lbs, the DuroMax XP9000iH sits in the heavier end of the spectrum among dual fuel generators rated from 7500 to 8500 watts. If weight is an important consideration for you, the Pulsar PGL9000BCO stands out as one of the top contenders in this power category, with a dry weight of 149 pounds.
  • With a noise rating as low as 68 dBA, this inverter generator is among the quieter options available in its type and power range. If noise emissions are one of your priorities, you may want to take a look at the DuroMax XP9500iH. It's one of the quietest options among generators of similar power, rated at 61 dBA.
  • With a run time of up to 20 hours at 25% load, the XP9000iH has one of the higher run times, compared to its similarly powerful peers. If extended autonomy is what matters most to you, the DuroMax XP10000HX could be an excellent choice, offering one of the longest run times among units in its power category, reaching up to 22 hours.
  • While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank's capacity and thus, doesn't say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. This inverter generator is one of the more fuel-efficient options in its power range, consuming approximately 0.35 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the DuroMax XP9500iH, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.34 GPH, may be the right generator for you.

Here's a list of the most popular specific comparisons:

Have powered my house on 2 occasions, one a more extended outage after a hurricane. Plus, I start it each quarter and never fails to crank. Very quiet too. My only complaints are that it is heavy (though the handle and wheels help) and the service port and location of service items are a bit frustrating.

    • Very powerful
    • Dual fuel
    • Quiet
    • Data center

I do not recommend this generator. I’ve had two of them and they both failed. On the first one, the control panel failed and I had to bring it to a “local” repair shop which was hours away. It sat there for months waiting for parts when they finally decided to send me a new unit instead. Low and behold the new unit’s control panel failed as well. On top of that the propane valve failed too. I reached out to customer support and they told me to bring it in for repair again. At this point I don’t want another generator from this company, I will look elsewhere. Currently I am still waiting to hear back from customer support to see if I can even return it.

    + PROS:
    • Lots of power
    - CONS:
    • Components break often leading to time consuming repairs.

Excellent generator! I run my whole house on this with no problems. 3400 square ft home. I have a quick connect off my 1000 gallon propane tank so it’s really simple to run. The price has dropped almost 500.00 since I bought mine, probably going to get another one and the parallel kit. Also more fuel efficient than advertised. Ran several test on both gas and propane, I found it to be almost 20% higher efficiency on both fuels than advertised, nice bonus. Highly recommend this unit. Have had multiple generators over the years and this seems the best for us. Lose power a lot and we’re very isolated so being able to hook to 1000 gallon tank is great, no running out for gas or filling 20 pounders in power outage. Have run it about 90 hours since purchasing this in 2021.Hope this helps.

    + PROS:
    • Quite, great fuel consumption, remote start, simple to use and great information usage panel.
    - CONS:
    • The hour meter doesn't continue, it restarts at zero hours every time you start it making it harder to keep track of hours on unit. Have a note book nearby for this. Changing the oil should be a little easier.
