Description
Zoom on the DuroMax XP8500E
In a few words, the DuroMax XP8500E is a portable generator perfectly suited for:
- Food van owners who know that just a short power outage could lose them hundreds of dollars
- Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
- Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working
In the forthcoming sections, you'll delve into its power characteristics, the various outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the additional features it boasts.
Power & Run Time
The DuroMax XP8500E's core is the 420 cc (16 hp) DuroMax OHV 4-stroke engine, which runs on gasoline. With an output of 120/240V, it provides a running wattage of 7,000W and a peak wattage of 8,500W.
The generator features a traditional recoil pull-start mechanism and also a convenient and efficient electric starter (battery included). It is rated for a noise of 72 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a dishwasher).
The XP8500E's fuel tank, with a capacity of 7.9 gallons, supports uninterrupted operation for up to 25 hours when fully fueled (fuel consumption at an estimated 0.32 gallons per hour).
The quite high THD (<12%) of the XP8500E makes it unsuitable for powering sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel is equipped with the following 5 AC outlets:
Additionally, it features 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A output allowing you to easily charge your batteries.
With its twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the XP8500E is configured to be transfer switch ready, allowing straightforward connection to your breaker box to supply backup power to your home during outages.
Portability
At L30 x W30 x H26 in, the traditional open frame structure of the DuroMax XP8500E ensures stability while facilitating convenient maintenance access to components and promoting air cooling. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.
Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 200 lbs make it incredibly difficult to manually lift and transport. Nevertheless, the restricted maneuverability is counteracted by its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle, enabling easy shifting once the generator is set in place.
Features
To facilitate status and activity monitoring, a convenient voltmeter, which provides an easy way to monitor power output anytime are embedded in the control panel of the XP8500E.
The inclusion of a built-in fuel gauge in the generator streamlines gas level checks for quick and convenient assessments.
From a security standpoint, the product offers an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), allowing you to use it with a peace of mind.
While the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), helpful for starting the device promptly, come with the DuroMax XP8500E, the following accessories are also included: battery charging cables, tool kit and funnel. An official storage cover is also available, as a separate purchase.

The DuroMax XP8500E versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP8500E compare to generators of similar power (between 6500 and 7500 W).
- At 200 lbs in dry weight, the DuroMax XP8500E fits well within the typical weight bracket for generators producing 6500 to 7500 rated watts. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Sportsman GEN85KIDF, standing at just 133 lbs.
- Given its rated noise level of 72 dBA, this generator aligns with the average expected noise rating for devices of similar power. If noise is a concern for you, you could consider the Powerhorse 7500i, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, rated at 55 dBA.
- Compared to devices of similar power, the XP8500E stands out with one of the highest run times, lasting up to 25 hours at 25% load.
- While run time is vital, it hinges on the fuel capacity. To grasp the full picture, we must also factor in fuel efficiency. This generator is one of the more fuel-efficient models of the aforementioned output range, as its estimated fuel consumption reaches just 0.32 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load. If not satisfied with the afore-mentioned fuel consumption, you may wish to check out the DuroMax XP7500DX. With a fuel consumption of as little as 0.29 GPH, it is one of the most efficient generators currently on the market.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 6500-7500W generators, the DuroMax XP8500E is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

Is this a quiet generator or is it loud? (Asked July 23, 2023)
The unit sound level is rated at 72dB at low load, and at 23 feet. It is not quiet by any means, but what is to be expected for a conventional open frame generator of this power. If noise is an important factor to you, you may want to consider an inverter generator.
Is the L14-30R outlet a non-GFIC outlet? The picture shows that green leaf below it I've been associating with GFCI outlets. (Asked July 19, 2024)
Only the 5-20R outlets are GFCI.
