Description

Zoom on the DuroMax XP7000iH

In a nutshell, the DuroMax XP7000iH is a portable inverter generator mostly geared towards:

  • RV travellers looking for even more independence
  • People occasionally participating in outdoor fairs, festivals or events
  • Food truck owners who want to ensure that their business is fully self-contained and does not rely on potentially unreliable external power
  • Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
  • Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment

In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed.

Power & Run Time

The DuroMax XP7000iH in use

The DuroMax XP7000iH

Delivering 120/240V, the DuroMax XP7000iH is enhanced by dual-fuel technology, providing power and versatility. Running on gasoline, it boasts a running wattage of 5,500W and a starting wattage of 7,000W. Alternatively, when propane-powered, it delivers 5,225 running watts and 6,650 starting watts. In addition, the device is parallel capable (parallel kit not included) and thus, can be linked to a similar or compatible unit for added power.

DuroMax’s Auto Fuel Selection technology automatically selects the fuel source (LPG or gasoline) depending on availability and prioritizes LPG. Thus, if a propane tank with enough LPG is connected, the generator will automatically use LPG. If no propane tank is connected, or if there is not enough LPG remaining in the tank, the generator will use gasoline.

The inverter generator, rated for a noise of 62 dBA (just slightly more noisy than background music), provides flexibility in starting, offering both a conventional pull-start mechanism and a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). Furthermore, for added convenience, the XP7000iH offers remote starting capabilities (key fob included).

In terms of its run time capability, the XP7000iH, furnished with a 3 gallons fuel tank, can maintain operations for up to 16 hours on a full tank of gasoline (with fuel consumption averaging 0.19 gallons per hour). It also provides up to 13 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.36 GPH) of operation with propane.

The XP7000iH ensures a clean sine wave output, boasting <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) to protect your sensitive electronics when connected to its AC outlets.

Outlets

The control panel features the following 3 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

Due to the featured twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the XP7000iH is transfer switch ready: you may connect it to a breaker box to power your household during a power outage.

Portability

The DuroMax XP7000iH is distinguished by its enclosed inverter generator design (L25.1 x W19.4 x H21.4 in), providing improved aesthetics and quieter performance compared to traditional, open frame units. This modern design aims to provide an ideal power solution to recreational users.

With a weight of 128 lbs, the generator is still labeled as 'portable,' denoting its ability to be moved, although its heaviness might restrict easy portability. Still, once it is on the ground, its set of 2 wheels (⌀7") and its telescopic handle can easily solve the issue of low mobility and allow for easy relocation of the device.

Features

The XP7000iH's control panel

Designed with a digital data center, the control panel of the XP7000iH grants you access to crucial data on the power output, voltage, fuel level, lifetime run hours and frequency, ensuring practical monitoring of its status and activity.

In addition to this info, the light indicators show you if the generator is ready, its oil levels are insufficient and the generator is on overload.

As far as security is concerned, the generator comes with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, providing peace of mind during use.

The XP7000iH also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.

With the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), letting you start the generator quickly, the DuroMax XP7000iH also comes with several accessories, including: propane hose, funnel, battery charger, key fob and tool kit.

The DuroMax XP7000iH versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP7000iH compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 5000 and 6000 W).

  • Weighing in at 128 lbs, the DuroMax XP7000iH fits within the expected weight range for inverters producing 5000 to 6000 rated watts. If weight matters to you, one of the champions in this power range is the Pulsar PGX60BiSRCO with only 93.5 pounds.
  • At 62 dBA, this inverter generator's noise rating is in line with the expected average for devices within its type and power category. If noise level is one your key decisive factors, you may find the Honda EU7000iS appealing. It's rated at 52 dBA, making it one of the quietest generators in its power range.
  • With a run time of up to 16 hours at 25% load, the XP7000iH has one of the higher run times, compared to its similarly powerful peers. If extended autonomy is what matters most to you, the Champion 201532 could be an excellent choice, offering one of the longest run times among units in its power category, reaching up to 18 hours.
  • Though run time is a significant parameter, it's closely tied to the generator's fuel tank size. To get a comprehensive understanding, fuel efficiency must also be taken into account. This inverter generator provides one of the best fuel efficiency among its peers of comparable power output, consuming approximately 0.19 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 5000-6000W dual fuel inverter generators, the DuroMax XP7000iH is on the expensive side of the price range.

While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.
