Zoom on the DuroMax XP5500DX

In a nutshell, the DuroMax XP5500DX is a portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • RV travellers looking for even more independence
  • Occasional participants of outdoor events, competitions, concerts and festivals
  • Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
  • Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working

In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device, along with its emission compliance information.

Power & Run Time

The DuroMax XP5500DX in use

The DuroMax XP5500DX

Thanks to its dual-fuel technology, the DuroMax XP5500DX delivers 120/240V and offers power and versatility. When gasoline-powered, it benefits from a running wattage of 4500W and a peak wattage of 5500W. When propane-powered, it has 4275 rated watts and 5225 peak watts.

The generator is rated for a noise of 69 dBA (less noisy than a normal conversation). Its starting mechanisms include a simple traditional pull-start mechanism and a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included).

With a fuel capacity of 4 gallons, the XP5500DX can operate for around 8.9 hours at 50% load using gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.45 GPH), or for around 7.6 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.62 GPH) using propane.

As the XP5500DX has a relatively high THD (<12%), it is not recommended to use it to power sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel features the upcoming 3 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

As the XP5500DX holds a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: you'll easily be able to connect it to your breaker box to power your home during a power outage.

Portability

With its dimensions of L25 x W23 x H22 in, the conventional, open frame design of the DuroMax XP5500DX offers stability and allows the generator to be raised above ground level. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.

Since the generator weighs 135 lbs, it will be incredibly difficult to manually lift it and transport it, even though it is technically considered to 'be portable' (in the sense that it is movable). Nevertheless, it can still be moved quite conveniently with the help of its wheel kit and its folding handle, once it is placed on the ground.

Features

The XP5500DX's control panel

The XP5500DX and its control panel include a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours. This feature comes handy when monitoring its status and activity.

In addition to this info, when its oil levels are insufficient, you will be informed by the featured light indicator.

The generator allows for a quick, easy and convenient assessment of its gas level, as it is equipped with a built-in fuel gauge.

Security-wise, this product benefits from an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.

The XP5500DX also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes. It’s a welcomed additional security feature, but don’t forget to always take your generator outside (opens in a new tab).

While the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), helpful for starting the device promptly, come with the DuroMax XP5500DX, the following accessories are also included: funnel, tool kit and propane hose.

Emissions

The DuroMax XP5500DX is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Therefore, its sale and purchase are permitted in all of the 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, which makes it suitable for use in forested areas.

The DuroMax XP5500DX versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP5500DX compare to generators of similar power (between 4000 and 5000 W).

  • As for its weight, the DuroMax XP5500DX weighs only 135 pounds, making it one of the lighter generators in the 4000-5000 rated wattage category. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the Pulsar PG5250, with a dry weight of just 99.5 pounds.
  • Since the generator's noise is rated at 69 dBA, it has the roughly average expected noise for a device of similar power. If you’d prefer a less noisy device, one of the most quiet devices, which share the same power range with this one, is the Yamaha EF4500iSE, whose lowest noise levels reach just 58 dBA.
  • The XP5500DX's autonomy is somewhat low end compared to devices of its power range, as it reaches only around 8.9 hours at 50% load on a full tank. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the Dewalt DXGN4500, with around 15 hours.
  • While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank’s capacity and thus, doesn’t say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. At an estimated fuel consumption of 0.45 GPH (gallon per hour) at 50% load, this generator is a rather fuel efficient one within its wattage category. If not satisfied with the afore-mentioned fuel consumption, you may wish to check out the Pulsar PG5250B. With a fuel consumption of as little as 0.33 GPH, it is one of the most efficient generators currently on the market.

Price comparison

As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 4000-5000W generators, the DuroMax XP5500DX is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
