Zoom on the DuroMax XP4500DX

In a nutshell, the DuroMax XP4500DX is a portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • RV travellers wishing to enhance their freedom and nomad lifestyle
  • People occasionally participating in sporting competitions, open-air performances and outdoor festivals
  • DIYers who wish to improve their efficiency with tools
  • Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials
  • Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment

In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device, along with its emission compliance information.

Power & Run Time

The DuroMax XP4500DX in use

The DuroMax XP4500DX

With its dual-fuel technology, the powerful and versatile DuroMax XP4500DX provides an output of 120/240V. While gasoline-powered, it gives a running wattage of 3500W along with a peak wattage of 4500W. While propane-powered, it provides 3325 rated watts and 4275 starting watts.

At a noise rating of 69 dBA (less noisy than an office), this generator can be started via a simple traditional pull-start mechanism, or a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included).

The XP4500DX, with a fuel capacity of 4 gallons, reaches a run time of around 10.4 hours at 50% load utilizing gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.38 GPH). Alternatively, it can reach a run time of around 8.9 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.53 GPH) with propane.

As the XP4500DX has a relatively high THD (<12%), it is not recommended to use it to power sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel provides the upcoming 3 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

Due to the featured twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the XP4500DX is transfer switch ready: you may connect it to a breaker box to power your household during a power outage.

Portability

The dimensions of the DuroMax XP4500DX, which are L25 x W23 x H22 in, and its typical, open frame design provides stability and enables the generator to be raised above ground level. The generator is designed for ideal use outdoors and in rough environments.

Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 126 pounds. Still, once it is on the ground, its wheel kit and its folding handle can easily solve the issue of low mobility and allow for easy relocation of the device.

Features

The XP4500DX's control panel

The XP4500DX's status and activity may be monitored conveniently via the control panel, as it features a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours.

In addition to this info, a light indicator serves to show you when the oil level is too low.

The fuel level of the generator can be determined quickly, easily, and conveniently with the help of its built-in fuel gauge.

From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), giving you a peace of mind during use.

The XP4500DX also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes. It’s a welcomed additional security feature, but don’t forget to always take your generator outside (opens in a new tab).

Along the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), useful for starting the generator right away, the DuroMax XP4500DX's package also includes these accessories: funnel, tool kit and propane hose.

Emissions

The DuroMax XP4500DX is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Therefore, its sale and purchase are permitted in all of the 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, so it is adequate for use in forested areas.

The DuroMax XP4500DX versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP4500DX compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 3000 and 4000 W).

  • With its weight of 126 lbs, the DuroMax XP4500DX is one of the heavier dual fuel generators in the 3000-4000 rated wattage category. If weight matters to you, one of the champions in this power range is the Genmax GM3500iAED with only 56.2 pounds.
  • If compared to generators capable of producing a similar running wattage, this generator with a lowest emitted noise of 69 dBA can be considered somewhat noisy. If you are concerned with noise, check out the Westinghouse iGen4500DF, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, with a noise rating of just 52 dBA.
  • The XP4500DX, offering a run time of around 10.4 hours with a full tank at a 50% load, falls within the average autonomy range when compared to its peers. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the Westinghouse iGen4500DF, with around 15 hours.
  • The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. This generator is rather wasteful, compared to other devices within the aforementioned output range, when it comes to gasoline consumption, as it reaches roughly 0.38 GPH at a 50% load. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the Westinghouse iGen4500DF, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.23 GPH, may be the right generator for you.

Price comparison

As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 3000-4000W dual fuel generators, the DuroMax XP4500DX is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
