Description

The XP4400E is a tried and true piece of equipment. It is well worth its weight in gold; as soon as the box is opened you will be amazed at the amount of thought and science that was put into designing this unit.

Zoom on the DuroMax XP4400E

In a nutshell, the DuroMax XP4400E is a portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • RV travellers who wish to upgrade their experience to another level
  • Occasional participants of outdoor events, competitions, concerts and festivals
  • DIYers who wish to improve their efficiency with tools
  • Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials
  • Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment

The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, the extra features it benefits from, and any relevant emission compliance details.

Power & Run Time

The DuroMax XP4400E houses a 212 cc (7 hp) DuroMax OHV 4-stroke engine, which provides 120/240V, consumes gasoline and delivers a running wattage of 3,500W along with a peak wattage of 4,400W.

With a noise rating of 69 dBA (less noisy than background music), the generator features a conventional pull-start mechanism, but also a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included).

The fuel capacity of 4 gallons allows the XP4400E to operate for up to 25 hours with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.16 GPH).

The powering of sensitive electronic devices with the XP4400E is not recommended due to its relatively high THD (<12%).

Outlets

The control panel features the upcoming 3 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

In addition, it provides 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A output with which charging your batteries is made easy.

As it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the XP4400E is transfer switch ready: in case of a power outage, you will be easily able to connect it to a breaker box and power your household.

Portability

With its dimensions of L25 x W24 x H21 in, the conventional, open frame design of the DuroMax XP4400E offers stability and allows the generator to be raised above ground level. The generator is designed for ideal use outdoors and in rough environments.

Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 122 lbs make it incredibly difficult to manually lift and transport. Nevertheless, it can still be moved quite conveniently with the help of its wheel kit (⌀8") and its folding handle, once it is placed on the ground.

The XP4400E's control panel

The control panel of the XP4400E includes a convenient voltmeter, which provides an easy way to monitor power output anytime, helpful for the monitoring of its status and activity.

In addition to this info, a light indicator serves to show you when the oil level is too low.

A built-in fuel gauge allows for a quick, easy and convenient check of the fuel level of the generator.

Security-wise, this product benefits from an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.

With the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), letting you start the generator quickly, the DuroMax XP4400E also comes with several accessories, including: funnel, battery charging cables and tool kit. An official storage cover is also available, as a separate purchase.

Emissions

The DuroMax XP4400E is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Therefore, its sale and purchase are permitted in all of the 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, so it is adequate for use in forested areas.

The DuroMax XP4400E versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP4400E compare to generators of similar power (between 3000 and 4000 W).

  • A weight of 122 lbs makes the DuroMax XP4400E one of the heavier devices in the 3000-4000 rated wattage range. If weight matters to you, one of the champions in this power range is the Pulsar PGD40iSCO with only 46 pounds.
  • If compared to generators capable of producing a similar running wattage, this generator with a lowest emitted noise of 69 dBA can be considered somewhat noisy. If noise emissions are important to you, one of the least noisy generators of this power range is the Westinghouse iGen4500DF with only 52 dBA.
  • Thanks to an impressive running time of up to 25 hours at 25% load, the XP4400E benefits from a higher run time than many generators of a similar output. If concerned with autonomy, one of the products of a comparable power output, which offers the highest run time, is the DuroStar DS4000S, boasting with up to 26 hours.
  • The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. With an estimated gasoline consumption of 0.16 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load, this generator is among the more fuel efficient of the products in the above-mentioned wattage range. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.13 GPH, the Energizer eZV3500P is a device you could look out for.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 3000-4000W generators, the DuroMax XP4400E is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

The bottom line

This is a really nice unit right out of the box with lots of accessories. It starts and runs well. Being a 4400 starting and 3500 running, It ran most all of my need appliance with no issue. Just be careful not to overload with too many heavy appliances at once. Like make coffee and turn coffee of for the microwave or hairdryer..

    + PROS:
    • The Generator is very easy to move around ,also having an interlock on my panel makes it easy to turn on most all needed items. Ran TV and two fridge and all needed lights perfectly.
    - CONS:
    • The gas cap is a tight one and a little hard to remove when new. Also make sure to tighten the handle so that it does not try to fold when lifting.
