Zoom on the DuroMax XP16000iH
In a nutshell, the DuroMax XP16000iH is a powerful portable inverter generator mostly geared towards:
- Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working
- Prudent homeowners who want a backup power source in case of a power outage
- Camping and tailgating buffs looking to enhance their experience
The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, the extra features it benefits from, and any relevant emission compliance details.
Power & Run Time
The dual-fuel technology of the DuroMax XP16000iH allows for an output of 120/240V and provides superb power and versatility. If gasoline-powered, the device provides a running wattage of 13,000W and a starting wattage of 16,000W. If propane-powered, it gives 12,350 rated watts and 15,200 starting watts. The impressive running wattage makes this unit the biggest inverter generator currently on the market. In addition, as it is parallel capable (parallel kit not included), this power can be increased when linked to another similar or compatible unit.
The inverter generator features a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). It is rated for a noise of 67 dBA (less noisy than a normal conversation). The XP16000iH can also be remotely started, offering further convenience (key fob included).
The XP16000iH, with a fuel capacity of 10.6 gallons, reaches a run time of around 10.5 hours at 50% load utilizing gasoline (fuel consumption around 1.01 GPH). Alternatively, it can reach a run time of around 3 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.57 GPH) with propane.
The XP16000iH produces a clean sine wave: thanks to a <5% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), your sensitive electronics can be safely plugged in the AC outlets.
The control panel includes the following 6 AC outlets:
The unit features an ATS plug, which makes it compatible with automatic transfer switches.
Thanks to its closed inverter generator design (L38.3 x W30.8 x H34.4 in), the DuroMax XP16000iH, is more esthetical than a typical, open frame generator. The featured design follows the latest trends and is ideal for easy and recreational use.
Since the generator weighs 368 lbs, it will be incredibly difficult to manually lift it and transport it, even though it is technically considered to 'be portable' (in the sense that it is movable). Nevertheless, thanks to its set of 4 wheels (⌀7") and its folding handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.
A digital data center, one of the features of the XP16000iH's control panel, gives you information on the voltage, frequency, lifetime run hours and power output, and thus, is helpful for the monitoring of its activity and status.
In addition to this info, the light indicators show you if the generator is ready, its oil levels are insufficient and the generator is overloaded.
The fuel level of the inverter generator can be determined quickly, easily, and conveniently with the help of its built-in fuel gauge.
From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), giving you a peace of mind during use.
The XP16000iH also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.
Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the DuroMax XP16000iH also is packed along with the following accessories: propane hose, tool kit, battery charger, key fob and funnel.
The DuroMax XP16000iH is EPA approved, but NOT CARB-compliant. Thus, it cannot be purchased or sold in California.
However, it features a spark arrestor, so it is adequate for use in forested areas.
The DuroMax XP16000iH versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP16000iH compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 10000 and 14000 W).
- At a dry weight of 368 pounds, the DuroMax XP16000iH is one of the heavier dual fuel devices which can produce between 10000 and 14000 running watts. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Pulsar PG13000BRCO, standing at just 231 lbs.
- Since this inverter generator is rated for a lowest possible noise of 67 dBA, it can be considered as one of the most quiet of the products generating similar power.
- Since the XP16000iH boasts with a run time of around 10.5 hours at 50% load, it can be safely judged as a device of a higher run time than most dual fuel generators of a comparable output. If autonomy is your priority, one of the devices of a similar power output with the highest run time is the DuroMax XP15000HX, reaching around 12 hours.
- The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. This inverter generator, with an estimated fuel consumption of just 1.01 GPH (gallon per hour) at 50% load, is one of the more fuel efficient generators, for the previously mentioned wattage range. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.95 GPH, the Westinghouse WGen12000DFc is a device you could look out for.
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 10000-14000W generators, the DuroMax XP16000iH is on the expensive side of the price range.
While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.
