Description

Zoom on the DuroMax XP15000HX

To sum up, the DuroMax XP15000HX is a powerful portable generator tailored for professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure..

In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed.

Power & Run Time

The DuroMax XP15000HX in use

The DuroMax XP15000HX

With its dual-fuel technology, the powerful and versatile DuroMax XP15000HX provides an output of 120/240V. While gasoline-powered, it gives a running wattage of 12,000W along with a peak wattage of 15,000W. While propane-powered, it provides 11,400 rated watts and 14,250 starting watts.

The generator features a standard recoil pull-rope starting mechanism and also an intuitive and practical electric starter (battery included). It is rated for a noise of 78 dBA (less noisy than a dishwasher). In addition, the XP15000HX also supports remote starting, enhancing user convenience (key fob included).

In terms of running time, the XP15000HX, equipped with a 13.2 gallons fuel tank, is capable of running continuously for around 12 hours at 50% load on a full gasoline tank (with fuel consumption estimated at around 1.1 gallons per hour). When utilizing propane, it provides around 2.8 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.68 GPH) of operation.

The quite high THD (<12%) of the XP15000HX makes it unsuitable for powering sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel is equipped with the following 13 AC outlets:

Five Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

While this DuroMax generator is not RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle can be used for a simple RV connection with an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, the XP15000HX's twist-lock L14-30R receptacle makes it transfer switch ready, enabling hassle-free connection to your breaker box for powering your home during outages.

Portability

With a size of L36 x W33.2 x H32 in, the DuroMax XP15000HX features an open frame design, providing stability and simplified maintenance access to components, enhancing air circulation. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.

While weighing 345 lbs, the generator is classified as 'portable,' indicating its mobility, albeit its heftiness may limit portability in specific situations. Despite the restricted maneuverability, its wheel kit (⌀13") and its folding handle provides a solution, allowing for convenient shifting once the generator is positioned on the ground.

Features

Panel of the DuroMax XP15000HX

The XP15000HX's control panel

Included in the control panel of the XP15000HX, a digital data center assists in tracking its status and activity by providing details on the power output, frequency, fuel level, lifetime run hours and voltage.

In addition to this info, the device's light indicator will illuminate to indicate if its oil levels are insufficient.

As far as security is concerned, the generator comes with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, providing peace of mind during use.

The XP15000HX also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.

Alongside the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) for quick setup, the DuroMax XP15000HX is bundled with additional accessories: tool kit, funnel, key fob and propane hose.

The DuroMax XP15000HX versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP15000HX compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 10000 and 14000 W).

  • With a weight of 345 lbs, the DuroMax XP15000HX sits in the heavier end of the spectrum among dual fuel generators rated from 10000 to 14000 watts. If weight is your top priority, one of the champions in this power category is the DuroStar DS13000MX, weighing just 209 pounds.
  • The generator can be considered average in its noise for its type and power category, as it is rated at 78 dBA. If noise level is one your key decisive factors, you may find the DuroMax XP16000iH appealing. It's rated at 67 dBA, making it one of the quietest generators in its power range.
  • With a run time of around 12 hours at 50% load, the XP15000HX has one of the highest run times, compared to its similarly powerful peers.
  • Run time is a key metric, but it's dependent on the generator's fuel capacity. Therefore, discussing fuel efficiency is necessary to get the full picture. This generator is not fuel-efficient compared to devices of similar output: its estimated fuel consumption stands at 1.1 GPH at a 50% load. If you wish to acquire one of the most gasoline efficient products of this power range, the DuroMax XP15000HX+, with a fuel consumption of 0.69 GPH could be in your good books.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 10000-14000W dual fuel generators, the DuroMax XP15000HX is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
