Description
Zoom on the DuroMax XP15000HX
In a nutshell, the DuroMax XP15000HX is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment.
In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device, along with its emission compliance information.
Power & Run Time
The dual-fuel technology of the DuroMax XP15000HX allows for an output of 120/240V and provides superb power and versatility. If gasoline-powered, the device provides a running wattage of 12,000W and a starting wattage of 15,000W. If propane-powered, it gives 11,400 rated watts and 14,250 starting watts.
DuroMax’s Auto Fuel Selection technology automatically selects the fuel source (LPG or gasoline) depending on availability and prioritizes LPG. Thus, if a propane tank with enough LPG is connected, the generator will automatically use LPG. If no propane tank is connected, or if there is not enough LPG remaining in the tank, the generator will use gasoline.
The generator features a simple traditional pull-start mechanism and also a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). It is rated for a noise of 78 dBA (less noisy than a shower). To add further convenience, the XP15000HX can be remotely started (key fob included).
The running time of the XP15000HX, with its 13.2 gallons fuel capacity, can reach around 12 hours at 50% load on a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 1.1 GPH). With propane, it can reach around 2.8 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.68 GPH).
Since the XP15000HX has a somewhat high THD (<12%), it is advisable to not use it for the powering of sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel includes the following 13 AC outlets:
Even though this DuroMax generator isn't quite RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle allows an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, due to the featured twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the XP15000HX is transfer switch ready: you may connect it to a breaker box to power your household during a power outage.
Portability
The DuroMax XP15000HX has the following dimensions: L36 x W33.2 x H32 in. In combination with its conventional, open frame design, they provide support and allow the generator to be raised above ground level. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.
Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 345 lbs make it incredibly difficult to manually lift and transport. Nevertheless, it can still be moved quite conveniently with the help of its wheel kit (⌀13") and its folding handle, once it is placed on the ground.
Features
One of the many XP15000HX's features is the data center, included in its control panel, which conveniently provides information on the power output, fuel level, lifetime run hours, frequency and voltage and thus, helps you monitor its activity and status.
In addition to this info, the device’s light indicator will display if the oil level is too low.
From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, giving you a peace of mind during use.
The XP15000HX also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.
While the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), helpful for starting the device promptly, come with the DuroMax XP15000HX, the following accessories are also included: funnel, key fob, tool kit and propane hose.
Emissions
The DuroMax XP15000HX is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Therefore, its sale and purchase are permitted in all of the 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, which makes it suitable for use in forested areas.
The DuroMax XP15000HX versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP15000HX compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 10000 and 14000 W).
- With its weight of 345 lbs, the DuroMax XP15000HX is one of the heavier dual fuel generators in the 10000-14000 rated wattage category. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the Pulsar PG13000BRCO, with a dry weight of just 231 pounds.
- When compared to devices able to produce a similar running wattage, this generator and its lowest emitted noise of 78 dBA is on the noisier side. For those who are looking for a less noisy device, we suggest the DuroMax XP16000iH. With just 67 dBA, it is one of the most quiet devices in this power range.
- As the XP15000HX features an autonomy of around 12 hours at 50% load, it has one of the highest run times in comparison to the other dual fuel generators of its power range.
- While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank’s capacity and thus, doesn’t say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. This generator has an average fuel consumption among comparably powerful devices, as it reaches 1.1 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the Westinghouse WGen12000DF, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.95 GPH, may be the right generator for you.
Price comparison
As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 10000-14000W dual fuel generators, the DuroMax XP15000HX is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
