Description
Zoom on the DuroMax XP15000HX
In summary, the DuroMax XP15000HX is a powerful portable generator especially useful for professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment.
Over the following sections, you'll uncover its power characteristics, the selection of outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it includes.
Power & Run Time
With its dual-fuel technology, the DuroMax XP15000HX delivers 120/240V, and offers power and flexibility. Running on gasoline, it boasts a running wattage of 12,000W and a peak wattage of 15,000W. When powered by propane, it delivers 11,400 running watts and 14,250 peak watts.
DuroMax’s Auto Fuel Selection technology automatically selects the fuel source (LPG or gasoline) depending on availability and prioritizes LPG. Thus, if a propane tank with enough LPG is connected, the generator will automatically use LPG. If no propane tank is connected, or if there is not enough LPG remaining in the tank, the generator will use gasoline.
With a noise rating of 78 dBA (less noisy than a shower), the generator features a classic hand-operated recoil starting mechanism, but also a convenient and efficient electric starter (battery included). For additional convenience, the XP15000HX may also be remotely started (key fob included).
In terms of its run time capability, the XP15000HX, furnished with a 13.2 gallons fuel tank, can maintain operations for around 12 hours at 50% load on a full tank of gasoline (with fuel consumption averaging 1.1 gallons per hour). It also provides around 2.8 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.68 GPH) of operation with propane.
Since the XP15000HX has a somewhat high THD (<12%), it is advisable to not use it for the powering of sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel features 13 AC outlets as follows:
This DuroMax generator features an L5-30R receptacle, enabling an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. However, it is still not quite RV ready. Besides, because the XP15000HX is equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it can power your home during a power outage, as it can be easily connected to your breaker box to power your household.
Portability
At L36 x W33.2 x H32 in, the DuroMax XP15000HX boasts a traditional open frame structure, ensuring stability and allowing for convenient maintenance access to components, promoting air circulation. The generator is designed for ideal use outdoors and in rough environments.
Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 345 pounds. However, the limited maneuverability is remedied with its wheel kit (⌀13") and its folding handle, facilitating convenient shifting once the generator is positioned on the ground.
Features
One of the many XP15000HX's features is the digital data center, included in its control panel, which conveniently provides information on the voltage, lifetime run hours, fuel level, frequency and power output and thus, helps you monitor its activity and status.
In addition to this info, the generator's light indicator provides visual feedback when its oil levels are insufficient.
From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, giving you a peace of mind during use.
The XP15000HX also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.
With the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), letting you start the generator quickly, the DuroMax XP15000HX also comes with several accessories, including: propane hose, funnel, key fob and tool kit.

The DuroMax XP15000HX versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP15000HX compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 10000 and 14000 W).
- With a weight of 345 lbs, the DuroMax XP15000HX sits in the heavier end of the spectrum among dual fuel generators rated from 10000 to 14000 watts. If weight is your top priority, one of the champions in this power category is the DuroStar DS13000MX, weighing just 209 pounds.
- The generator can be considered average in its noise for its type and power category, as it is rated at 78 dBA. If noise level is one your key decisive factors, you may find the DuroMax XP16000iH appealing. It's rated at 67 dBA, making it one of the quietest generators in its power range.
- With a run time of around 12 hours at 50% load, the XP15000HX has one of the highest run times, compared to its similarly powerful peers.
- Run time is a key metric, but it's dependent on the generator's fuel capacity. Therefore, discussing fuel efficiency is necessary to get the full picture. This generator is not fuel-efficient compared to devices of similar output: its estimated fuel consumption stands at 1.1 GPH at a 50% load. If you wish to acquire one of the most gasoline efficient products of this power range, the DuroMax XP15000HX+, with a fuel consumption of 0.69 GPH could be in your good books.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 10000-14000W dual fuel generators, the DuroMax XP15000HX is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
