Zoom on the DuroMax XP15000EH

In a nutshell, the DuroMax XP15000EH is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment.

In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device, along with its emission compliance information.

Power & Run Time

The DuroMax XP15000EH in use

The DuroMax XP15000EH

With its dual-fuel technology, the powerful and versatile DuroMax XP15000EH provides an output of 120/240V. While gasoline-powered, it gives a running wattage of 12000W along with a peak wattage of 15000W. While propane-powered, it provides 11400 rated watts and 14250 starting watts.

Enjoying a noise rating of 83 dBA (just slightly more noisy than garbage disposal), this generator gets running thanks to a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included).

As for its running time, the XP15000EH, along with its 10.6 gallons fuel capacity, can run for around 9 hours at 50% load with a full tank filled with gasoline (fuel consumption around 1.18 GPH). If propane is used, it can operate for around 3 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.57 GPH).

The quite high THD (<12%) of the XP15000EH makes it unsuitable for powering sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel features the following 7 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

While this DuroMax generator is not RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle can be used for a simple RV connection with an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, because the XP15000EH is equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it can power your home during a power outage, as it can be easily connected to your breaker box to power your household.

Portability

The dimensions of the DuroMax XP15000EH, which are L30 x W33 x H35 in, and its typical, open frame design provides stability and enables the generator to be raised above ground level. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.

As the generator's weight is 380 pounds, manually moving it or transporting it may be challenging, despite the fact that it is technically considered 'portable' (movable). Nevertheless, thanks to its wheel kit and its folding handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.

A lift hook located on the top of the frame offers an additional safety feature while facilitating the transport, loading and unloading of the generator.

Features

The XP15000EH's control panel

The XP15000EH's control center features a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours to aid you with the monitoring of its status and activity.

In addition to this info, the device’s light indicator will display if the oil level is too low.

The generator includes a built-in fuel gauge, a quick, easy and convenient method of checking the device’s gas level.

From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, giving you a peace of mind during use.

With the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), letting you start the generator quickly, the DuroMax XP15000EH also comes with several accessories, including: tool kit, propane hose and funnel.

Emissions

The DuroMax XP15000EH is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. It can therefore be sold and purchased in all 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, so it is adequate for use in forested areas.

The DuroMax XP15000EH versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP15000EH compare to generators of similar power (between 10000 and 14000 W).

  • A weight of 380 lbs makes the DuroMax XP15000EH one of the heavier devices in the 10000-14000 rated wattage range. If weight matters to you, one of the champions in this power range is the A-iPower SUA13000EFI with only 218 pounds.
  • As this generator has its lowest possible noise of 83 dBA, it should be considered noisier compared to its peers of a comparable running wattage. If noise emissions are one of your priorities, you may be interested in the A-iPower SUA13000EFI, one of the least noisy generators similarly powerful as this one, rated for 69 dBA.
  • The XP15000EH, falls within the average autonomy range compared to generators of a roughly same power, with a run time of around 9 hours at a 50% load and a full tank. Furthermore, considering the run times, one of the generators which have a roughly same power output, with the highest autonomy, is the Powerhorse 13000ES, as it provides around 15 hours.
  • The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. This generator is rather wasteful, compared to other devices within the aforementioned output range, when it comes to gasoline consumption, as it reaches roughly 1.18 GPH at a 50% load. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.78 GPH, the A-iPower SUA13000EFI is a device you could look out for.

Here's a list of the most popular specific comparisons:

This has been a reliable and trustworthy generator that I use for whole home backup. The only concern that I have is finding parts for it. The owners manual does not give you a list of part numbers for things like oil filters, air filters, brushes, etc. and the parts installed on the generator have no markings or part numbers either.

    + PROS:
    • Powers the entire house with power to spare..
    • Relatively quiet for its size.
    • Seems to be well made.
    • Dual fuel.
    - CONS:
    • Big.
    • Heavy.
    • Hard to find spare parts for maintenance parts.
