Description

DuroMax’s XP15000EH is the most powerful generator of the dual fuel line and is perfect for home backup and jobsites. This unit provides the power of a large standby generator while occupying the footprint of a portable. Equipped with a commanding 713cc V-twin engine, this model is perfect for anyone looking for a reliable power source that runs on either gas or propane.

Zoom on the DuroMax XP15000EH

In a nutshell, the DuroMax XP15000EH is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment.

The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, the extra features it benefits from, and any relevant emission compliance details.

Power & Run Time

The DuroMax XP15000EH in use

The DuroMax XP15000EH

The dual-fuel technology of the DuroMax XP15000EH allows for an output of 120/240V and provides superb power and versatility. If gasoline-powered, the device provides a running wattage of 12,000W and a starting wattage of 15,000W. If propane-powered, it gives 11,400 rated watts and 14,250 starting watts.

The generator is rated for a noise of 83 dBA (just slightly more noisy than garbage disposal). Its starting mechanism is based on a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included).

Regarding its running time, the XP15000EH, with a 10.6 gallons fuel capacity can operate for around 8 hours at 50% load with a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 1.33 GPH). When using propane, it can run for around 2.7 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.74 GPH).

The powering of sensitive electronic devices with the XP15000EH is not recommended due to its relatively high THD (<12%).

Outlets

The control panel provides the upcoming 7 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

Even though this DuroMax generator isn't quite RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle allows an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, as it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the XP15000EH is transfer switch ready: in case of a power outage, you will be easily able to connect it to a breaker box and power your household.

Portability

The DuroMax XP15000EH has a conventional, open frame design, of the following dimensions: L30 x W33 x H35 in, which offers support and allows it to be raised above ground level. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.

Since the generator weighs 380 lbs, it will be incredibly difficult to manually lift it and transport it, even though it is technically considered to 'be portable' (in the sense that it is movable). Still, once it is on the ground, its wheel kit (⌀12") and its folding handle can easily solve the issue of low mobility and allow for easy relocation of the device.

A lift hook located on the top of the frame offers an additional safety feature while facilitating the transport, loading and unloading of the generator.

Features

The XP15000EH's control panel

The XP15000EH's status and activity may be monitored conveniently via the control panel, as it features a convenient meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours.

In addition to this info, a light indicator shows you if the oil level is too low.

The fuel level of the generator can be determined quickly, easily, and conveniently with the help of its built-in fuel gauge.

As far as security is concerned, the generator can be used with a peace of mind, as it features an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker).

While the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), helpful for starting the device promptly, come with the DuroMax XP15000EH, the following accessories are also included: propane hose, funnel and tool kit.

Emissions

The DuroMax XP15000EH is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Therefore, its sale and purchase are permitted in all of the 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor and thus, may be used in forested areas.

The DuroMax XP15000EH versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP15000EH compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 10000 and 14000 W).

  • At a dry weight of 380 pounds, the DuroMax XP15000EH is one of the heaviest dual fuel devices which can produce between 10000 and 14000 running watts. If weight matters to you, one of the champions in this power range is the Pulsar PG13000BRCO with only 231 pounds.
  • This generator, with its lowest possible noise rated at 83 dBA falls into the more noisy category, compared to other devices of a similar running wattage. If you’d prefer a less noisy device, one of the most quiet devices, which share the same power range with this one, is the DuroMax XP16000iH, whose lowest noise levels reach just 67 dBA.
  • Regarding its autonomy, the autonomy of the XP15000EH, reaching around 8 hours at a 50% load, can be considered as low end, compared to other dual fuel products of a roughly equal output. If concerned with autonomy, one of the products of a comparable power output, which offers the highest run time, is the DuroMax XP15000HX, boasting with around 12 hours.
  • Run times are important, yet thanks to their dependence on the fuel capacity, they should be judged along with the fuel consumption of the device. This generator is somewhat less fuel efficient than devices of comparable output: its estimated fuel consumption reaches 1.33 GPH at a 50% load. If not satisfied with the afore-mentioned fuel consumption, you may wish to check out the Westinghouse WGen12000DF. With a fuel consumption of as little as 0.95 GPH, it is one of the most efficient generators currently on the market.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 10000-14000W dual fuel generators, the DuroMax XP15000EH is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

This has been a reliable and trustworthy generator that I use for whole home backup. The only concern that I have is finding parts for it. The owners manual does not give you a list of part numbers for things like oil filters, air filters, brushes, etc. and the parts installed on the generator have no markings or part numbers either.

    + PROS:
    • Powers the entire house with power to spare..
    • Relatively quiet for its size.
    • Seems to be well made.
    • Dual fuel.
    - CONS:
    • Big.
    • Heavy.
    • Hard to find spare parts for maintenance parts.
