Zoom on the DuroMax XP13000HXT

In a nutshell, the DuroMax XP13000HXT is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure
  • Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures

Over the following sections, you'll uncover its power characteristics, the selection of outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it includes.

Power & Run Time

The DuroMax XP13000HXT in use

The DuroMax XP13000HXT

The DuroMax XP13000HXT delivers 120/240V and is equipped with a tri-fuel technology, enabling it to operate on gasoline, propane, or natural gas. When powered by gasoline, it achieves a running wattage of 10,500W and a peak wattage of 13,000W. Switching to propane provides 9,500 rated watts and 12,000 peak watts, while natural gas operation delivers 8,500W of rated wattage and 10,000W of starting wattage.

At a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a dishwasher), this generator provides the choice between a conventional pull-start mechanism or a practical and straightforward electric starter (battery included) for starting. For added user convenience, the XP13000HXT is equipped with remote starting capabilities (key fob included).

In terms of run time, the XP13000HXT, boasting a 8.3 gallons fuel tank, can run for around 8.5 hours at 50% load on a full tank of gasoline (with fuel consumption averaging 0.98 gallons per hour). Additionally, it provides around 3.2 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.47 GPH) of operation with propane.

Since the XP13000HXT has a somewhat high THD (<12%), it is advisable to not use it for the powering of sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel provides the upcoming 7 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

Despite not meeting the 'RV Ready' criteria, this DuroMax generator grants the advantage of simple RV compatibility via its L5-30R receptacle, enabling you to conveniently power your RV by using an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the XP13000HXT is engineered to be transfer switch ready, enabling simple hookup to your breaker box to provide backup power for your home during blackouts.

Portability

With dimensions of L30 x W29 x H26 in, the standard open frame design of the DuroMax XP13000HXT provides stability and easy maintenance access to components, as well as good air circulation. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.

While the generator is considered to be technically 'portable' (in the sense that you can move it), manually lifting and transporting it may be challenging, due to its high weight of 240 lbs. Nonetheless, the limited maneuverability is compensated for by utilizing its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle, which facilitates shifting once the generator is set on the ground.

Features

The XP13000HXT's control panel

A digital data center, one of the features of the XP13000HXT's control panel, gives you information on the lifetime run hours, frequency, voltage, fuel level and power output, and thus, is helpful for the monitoring of its activity and status.

In addition to this info, a light indicator on the device will signal if its oil levels are insufficient.

As far as security is concerned, the generator comes with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), providing peace of mind during use.

The XP13000HXT also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.

Besides the classic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, the DuroMax XP13000HXT also comes with some accessories: propane hose, funnel, natural gas hose with NPT adapter, tool kit and key fob are included.

The DuroMax XP13000HXT versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP13000HXT compare to multi-fuel generators of similar power (between 10000 and 11000 W).

  • With a weight of 240 lbs, the DuroMax XP13000HXT is notably on the heaviest side among multi-fuel generators in the 10000-11000 rated wattage range. If weight is your top priority, one of the champions in this power category is the DuroStar DS13000MX, weighing just 209 pounds.
  • As its lowest possible noise is rated at 74 dBA, this generator qualifies as one of the most quiet of the products of similar type and power.
  • As for its autonomy, the XP13000HXT, with an autonomy of around 8.5 hours at a 50% load, is placed on the low end among the generators of its kind. If runtime is a priority for you, the Predator 13000 stands out as one of the generators with the longest run time in its power range, providing around 12.1 hours of continuous use.
  • Run time is a key metric, but it's dependent on the generator's fuel capacity. Therefore, discussing fuel efficiency is necessary to get the full picture. As this generator uses an estimated 0.98 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load, it finds itself in the average gasoline consumption range of similar products. If not satisfied with the afore-mentioned fuel consumption, you may wish to check out the Predator 13000. With a fuel consumption of as little as 0.88 GPH, it is one of the most efficient generators currently on the market.
According to our stats, the following comparison is pretty popular: DuroMax XP13000HXT vs Predator 13000.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 10000-11000W multi-fuel generators, the DuroMax XP13000HXT is on the expensive side of the price range.

While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.
