Zoom on the DuroMax XP13000HXT
In a nutshell, the DuroMax XP13000HXT is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards:
- Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment
- Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device, along with its emission compliance information.
Power & Run Time
The DuroMax XP13000HXT delivers 120/240V and benefits from a tri-fuel technology that allows it to run on gasoline, propane, or natural gas. When gasoline-powered, it enjoys a running wattage of 10,500W and a peak wattage of 13,000W. When propane-powered, it benefits from 9,500 rated watts and 12,000 peak watts. Its natural gas operation offers 8,500W of rated wattage and 10,000W of starting wattage.
At a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a vacuum cleaner), this generator can be started via a simple traditional pull-start mechanism, or a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). The XP13000HXT can also be remotely started, offering further convenience (key fob included).
With a fuel capacity of 8.3 gallons, the XP13000HXT can operate for around 8.5 hours at 50% load using gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.98 GPH), or for around 3.2 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.47 GPH) using propane.
The quite high THD (<12%) of the XP13000HXT makes it unsuitable for powering sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel features the upcoming 7 AC outlets:
Even though this DuroMax generator isn't quite RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle allows an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, since the XP13000HXT bears a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it is easily connectible to a breaker box and can power your home in case of a power outage.
Portability
The DuroMax XP13000HXT has a conventional, open frame design, of the following dimensions: L30 x W29 x H26 in, which offers support and allows it to be raised above ground level. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.
Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 240 pounds. Nevertheless, thanks to its wheel kit and its folding handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.
Features
One of the many XP13000HXT's features is the data center, included in its control panel, which conveniently provides information on the voltage, power output, lifetime run hours, frequency and fuel level and thus, helps you monitor its activity and status.
In addition to this info, a light indicator allows you to instantly see if the oil level is too low.
From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), giving you a peace of mind during use.
The XP13000HXT also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes. It’s a welcomed additional security feature, but don’t forget to always take your generator outside (opens in a new tab).
Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the DuroMax XP13000HXT also is packed along with the following accessories: tool kit, propane hose, key fob, funnel and natural gas hose with NPT adapter.
Emissions
The DuroMax XP13000HXT is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Thus, selling and purchasing this generator is allowed in each of the 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, making it usable in forested areas.

The DuroMax XP13000HXT versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP13000HXT compare to generators of similar power (between 10000 and 11000 W).
- Since the generator weighs in at a dry weight of 240 lbs, the DuroMax XP13000HXT belongs in the expected weight range for devices which can produce between 10000 and 11000 rated watts. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the A-iPower SUA13000EFI, standing at just 218 lbs.
- Since the generator's noise is rated at 74 dBA, it has the roughly average expected noise for a device of similar power. If noise emissions are important to you, one of the least noisy generators of this power range is the A-iPower SUA13000EFI with only 69 dBA.
- As far as autonomy is concerned, providing around 8.5 hours of runtime with a full tank at a 50% load, the XP13000HXT falls into the low end in comparison with other devices of a comparable power output. If concerned with autonomy, one of the products of a comparable power output, which offers the highest run time, is the Powerhorse 13000ES, boasting with around 15 hours.
- Even though run times are undoubtedly important, they are dependent on the fuel capacity to a large extent. For a more wholesome picture, we must take into consideration the fuel consumption of the generator. In fact, this generator is not among the most fuel efficient, within the aforementioned wattage range : its estimated gasoline consumption at 50% load is around 0.98 GPH. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.78 GPH, the A-iPower SUA13000EFI is a device you could look out for.
Price comparison
As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 10000-11000W generators, the DuroMax XP13000HXT is on the expensive side of the price range.
While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.
