Zoom on the DuroMax XP13000HXT
In summary, the DuroMax XP13000HXT is a powerful portable generator especially useful for:
- Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working
- Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed, including its emission compliance information.
Power & Run Time
The DuroMax XP13000HXT delivers 120/240V and benefits from a tri-fuel technology that allows it to run on gasoline, propane, or natural gas. When gasoline-powered, it enjoys a running wattage of 10500W and a peak wattage of 13000W. When propane-powered, it benefits from 9500 rated watts and 12000 peak watts. Its natural gas operation offers 8500W of rated wattage and 10000W of starting wattage.
At a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a dishwasher), this generator can be started via a simple traditional pull-start mechanism, or a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included). For additional convenience, the XP13000HXT may also be remotely started (key fob included).
With a fuel capacity of 8.3 gallons, the XP13000HXT can operate for around 8.5 hours at 50% load using gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.98 GPH), or for around 3.2 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.47 GPH) using propane.
The XP13000HXT is unsuitable for the powering of sensitive electronic devices due to its relatively high THD (<12%).
The control panel provides the upcoming 7 AC outlets:
This DuroMax generator features an L5-30R receptacle, enabling an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. However, it is still not quite RV ready. Besides, as the XP13000HXT holds a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: you'll easily be able to connect it to your breaker box to power your home during a power outage.
The design of the DuroMax XP13000HXT is a typical, open frame, with the dimensions of L30 x W29 x H26 in, offering support and stability and enabling the possibility of raising it above ground level. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.
Since the generator weighs 240 lbs, it will be incredibly difficult to manually lift it and transport it, even though it is technically considered to 'be portable' (in the sense that it is movable). Still, once it is on the ground, its wheel kit and its folding handle can easily solve the issue of low mobility and allow for easy relocation of the device.
One of the many XP13000HXT's features is the data center, included in its control panel, which conveniently provides information on the power output, frequency, fuel level, lifetime run hours and voltage and thus, helps you monitor its activity and status.
In addition to this info, a light indicator shows you if the oil level is too low.
As for its security measures, the device features an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, letting you use it with a peace of mind.
The XP13000HXT also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes. It’s a welcomed additional security feature, but don’t forget to always take your generator outside (opens in a new tab).
Besides the classic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, the DuroMax XP13000HXT also comes with some accessories: propane hose, funnel, key fob, natural gas hose with NPT adapter and tool kit are included.
The DuroMax XP13000HXT is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. It can therefore be sold and purchased in all 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, which makes it suitable for use in forested areas.
The DuroMax XP13000HXT versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP13000HXT compare to generators of similar power (between 10000 and 11000 W).
- Weight-wise, the DuroMax XP13000HXT has only 240 lbs, which renders it one of the lighter generators which produce 10000 to 11000 rated watts. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the A-iPower SUA13000EFI, with a dry weight of just 218 pounds.
- The generator can be considered average in its noise for its power category, as it is rated at 74 dBA. If noise emissions are important to you, one of the least noisy generators of this power range is the A-iPower SUA13000EFI with only 69 dBA.
- Autonomy-wise, with around 8.5 hours on a full tank at a 50% load, the XP13000HXT is on the low end when compared to other generators of a similar power output. If concerned with autonomy, one of the products of a comparable power output, which offers the highest run time, is the Powerhorse 13000ES, boasting with around 15 hours.
- Autonomy holds its importance, however, it is largely dependent on the generator’s fuel capacity and so, it is nonsensible to discuss it without mentioning fuel efficiency as well. Compared to its peers, this generator is not exactly fuel efficient, compared to similarly powerful devices, with an estimated fuel consumption of 0.98 GPH at a 50% load. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.78 GPH, the A-iPower SUA13000EFI is a device you could look out for.
As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 10000-11000W generators, the DuroMax XP13000HXT is on the expensive side of the price range.
While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.
The bottom line
- CO Alert technology
- Several accessories included
- GFCI Outlets
- Remote start
- Lightweight for its kind (240 lbs)
- Acceptable noise (74 dBA)
- On the expensive side
- Relatively low run time
- Low fuel efficiency
