Zoom on the DuroMax XP13000HX
In a few words, the DuroMax XP13000HX is a powerful portable generator perfectly suited for professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment..
In the upcoming sections, you'll discover its power characteristics, the array of outlets it presents, its overall portability, and the additional features it possesses.
Power & Run Time
The dual-fuel technology of the DuroMax XP13000HX allows for an output of 120/240V and provides superb power and versatility. If gasoline-powered, the device provides a running wattage of 10,500W and a starting wattage of 13,000W. If propane-powered, it gives 9,975 rated watts and 12,350 starting watts.
The generator, rated for a noise of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a vacuum cleaner), provides flexibility in starting, offering both a traditional recoil pull-start mechanism and a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included).
With a fuel capacity of 8.3 gallons, the XP13000HX can operate for around 8.5 hours at 50% load using gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.98 GPH), or for around 3.2 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.47 GPH) using propane.
The powering of sensitive electronic devices with the XP13000HX is not recommended due to its relatively high THD (<12%).
Outlets
The control panel features the upcoming 7 AC outlets:
This DuroMax generator isn't quite RV Ready, but it features an L5-30R receptacle, allowing a simple RV connection through an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, since it boasts a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the XP13000HX is engineered to be transfer switch ready, ensuring easy integration with your breaker box to provide backup power to your home during outages.
Portability
Measuring L29 x W30 x H26 in, the DuroMax XP13000HX showcases a classic open frame layout, offering stability and simple maintenance access to components, while facilitating air circulation. The generator is designed for ideal use outdoors and in rough environments.
As the generator's weight is 240 pounds, manually moving it or transporting it may be challenging, despite the fact that it is technically considered 'portable' (movable). Still, once it is on the ground, its wheel kit and its folding handle can easily solve the issue of low mobility and allow for easy relocation of the device.
Features
The control panel of the XP13000HX is equipped with a convenient meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours, aiding in monitoring its status and activity.
In addition to this info, a light indicator on the device will notify you if its oil levels are insufficient.
The generator includes a built-in fuel gauge, a quick, easy and convenient method of checking the device’s gas level.
From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), giving you a peace of mind during use.
The XP13000HX also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.
While the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), helpful for starting the device promptly, come with the DuroMax XP13000HX, the following accessories are also included: funnel, tool kit and propane hose.

The DuroMax XP13000HX versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP13000HX compare to generators of similar power (between 10000 and 11000 W).
- With a dry weight of 240 pounds, the DuroMax XP13000HX finds itself in the expected weight range for generators able to produce between 10000 and 11000 rated watts. If weight is a key factor for your needs, the DuroStar DS13000MX is noteworthy for being one of the top contenders in this power range, with a dry weight of 209 pounds.
- As its lowest possible noise is rated at 74 dBA, this generator qualifies as one of the more quiet of the products of similar power. If you value reduced noise levels, the NorthStar c13000s could be worth considering. It's one of the quietest generators in its power range, rated at 72 dBA.
- Regarding its autonomy, the autonomy of the XP13000HX, reaching around 8.5 hours at a 50% load, can be considered as low end, compared to other products of a roughly equal output. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the Powerhorse 13000ES, with around 15 hours.
- Run time is a key metric, but it's dependent on the generator's fuel tank capacity. Therefore, discussing fuel efficiency is necessary for a complete understanding. This generator has an estimated fuel consumption of roughly 0.98 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load, rendering it somewhat average compared to devices of a similar output. If you wish to get a unit of similar power, but with one of the best fuel efficiency, you could consider the Powerhorse 13000ES, which has an impressively low fuel consumption of 0.84 GPH.
Here's a list of the most popular specific comparisons:
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 10000-11000W dual fuel generators, the DuroMax XP13000HX is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

User Reviews
The generator looks good and works very good. However, I’m of the opinion that We purchase a Monday Morning assambled one! Our HX 13000 XP smokes none stop.
We were told that it could have oil In the muffler. To keep running it….. How did oil got to the muffler? Remains Unanswered.
Cant afford to do that. So we are looking to returned it….
I went online to see how to break in an engine on a portable generator. I looked at several links and they all practically said the same thing. After running the engine for an hour I changed the oil. It was dirty. Second hour not so dirty. I even did it another hour and it was pretty clean. The 4th hour I put a load on the engine. I never had a problem with the oil getting on the frame because I tilted the the front of the unit towards the rear about a half inch and to the oil drain side about the same. I have since ran the unit for several more hours with no problems. I’m buying a line conditioner to use for sensitive items. I already have USP battery backup units to run my computers on. It’s a great unit. I’m happy with it.
I recently purchased this generator to power my house and business. I opened the box, installed the wheels, front legs, and handles, removed the red shipping engine brace, connected the negative battery cable, and added oil. The generator comes with pot-metal tools, but honestly use your own.
I broke the generator in on propane for 15 mins, alternating a small 1500 watt load for a few minutes off and on (stator heat cool cycles). Then changed oil. Changing the oil is messy (gets on the frame/engine brace) but I guess that is normal for generators.
The engine (push button) fired right up without an effort, and the generator is very easy to operate. The start push button is also the stop button (just hold it in till it starts blinking). This generator is loud, but it is 13Kw and an open frame design.
The oil dipstick threading is M27-3.0. I ordered a magnetic dipstick in that thread pitch, and it fit perfectly.
