Description
Zoom on the DuroMax XP13000HX
In a nutshell, the DuroMax XP13000HX is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure.
In the upcoming sections, you'll discover its power characteristics, the array of outlets it presents, its overall portability, and the additional features it possesses.
Power & Run Time
Delivering 120/240V, the DuroMax XP13000HX is enhanced by dual-fuel technology, providing power and versatility. Running on gasoline, it boasts a running wattage of 10,500W and a starting wattage of 13,000W. Alternatively, when propane-powered, it delivers 9,975 running watts and 12,350 starting watts.
With a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a dishwasher), the generator features a classic hand-operated recoil starting mechanism, but also a straightforward and intuitive electric starter (battery included).
Regarding its running time, the XP13000HX, with a 8.3 gallons fuel capacity, can operate for around 8.5 hours at 50% load with a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.98 GPH). When using propane, it can run for around 3.2 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.47 GPH).
The quite high THD (<12%) of the XP13000HX makes it unsuitable for powering sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel includes the following 7 AC outlets:
Even though this DuroMax generator isn't quite RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle allows an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, thanks to its twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the XP13000HX is transfer switch ready, facilitating easy hookup to your breaker box to provide backup power for your home during blackouts.
Portability
With its L29 x W30 x H26 in dimensions, the open frame structure of the DuroMax XP13000HX guarantees stability, simplified maintenance access to components, and better air cooling than enclosed units. The generator is designed for ideal use outdoors and in rough environments.
While technically classified as 'portable' due to its ability to be moved, the 240 lbs of this generator make manual lifting and transportation incredibly difficult. Nevertheless, thanks to its wheel kit and its folding handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.
Features
The control panel of the XP13000HX includes a convenient meter, providing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours data, helpful for the monitoring of its status and activity.
In addition to this info, a light indicator on the device will signal if its oil levels are insufficient.
Equipped with a built-in fuel gauge, the generator facilitates swift gas level checks.
As for its security measures, the device features an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), letting you use it with a peace of mind.
The XP13000HX also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.
Alongside the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) for quick setup, the DuroMax XP13000HX is bundled with additional accessories: propane hose, funnel and tool kit.

The DuroMax XP13000HX versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP13000HX compare to generators of similar power (between 10000 and 11000 W).
- Having a dry weight of 240 lbs, the DuroMax XP13000HX belongs in the expected weight range for generators which produce 10000 to 11000 rated watts. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the DuroStar DS13000MX, with a dry weight of just 209 pounds.
- With noise emissions rated as low as 74 dBA, this generator falls within the typical noise range expected for devices of similar power. If you’d prefer a less noisy device, one of the most quiet devices, which share the same power range with this one, is the A-iPower SUA13000EFI, whose lowest noise levels reach just 69 dBA.
- In terms of autonomy, the XP13000HX offers around 8.5 hours at a 50% load, placing it at the lower range within its power range. If concerned with autonomy, one of the products of a comparable power output, which offers the highest run time, is the Powerhorse 13000ES, boasting with around 15 hours.
- Run time is a key metric, but it's dependent on the generator's fuel tank capacity. Therefore, discussing fuel efficiency is necessary for a complete understanding. When operating at 50% load, the generator's fuel consumption is estimated at 0.98 GPH, placing it within the average range of gasoline usage among similarly powerful devices. If minimizing fuel usage is one of your key priorities, the A-iPower SUA13000EFI is one of the most efficient devices with similar power output, with a gasoline consumption of only 0.78 gallons per hour.

User Reviews
The generator looks good and works very good. However, I’m of the opinion that We purchase a Monday Morning assambled one! Our HX 13000 XP smokes none stop.
We were told that it could have oil In the muffler. To keep running it….. How did oil got to the muffler? Remains Unanswered.
Cant afford to do that. So we are looking to returned it….
I went online to see how to break in an engine on a portable generator. I looked at several links and they all practically said the same thing. After running the engine for an hour I changed the oil. It was dirty. Second hour not so dirty. I even did it another hour and it was pretty clean. The 4th hour I put a load on the engine. I never had a problem with the oil getting on the frame because I tilted the the front of the unit towards the rear about a half inch and to the oil drain side about the same. I have since ran the unit for several more hours with no problems. I’m buying a line conditioner to use for sensitive items. I already have USP battery backup units to run my computers on. It’s a great unit. I’m happy with it.
I recently purchased this generator to power my house and business. I opened the box, installed the wheels, front legs, and handles, removed the red shipping engine brace, connected the negative battery cable, and added oil. The generator comes with pot-metal tools, but honestly use your own.
I broke the generator in on propane for 15 mins, alternating a small 1500 watt load for a few minutes off and on (stator heat cool cycles). Then changed oil. Changing the oil is messy (gets on the frame/engine brace) but I guess that is normal for generators.
The engine (push button) fired right up without an effort, and the generator is very easy to operate. The start push button is also the stop button (just hold it in till it starts blinking). This generator is loud, but it is 13Kw and an open frame design.
The oil dipstick threading is M27-3.0. I ordered a magnetic dipstick in that thread pitch, and it fit perfectly.
