Zoom on the DuroMax XP12000X

In a few words, the DuroMax XP12000X is a powerful portable generator perfectly suited for:

  • Prudent homeowners who want a backup power source in case of a power outage
  • Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment

In the upcoming sections, you'll discover its power characteristics, the array of outlets it presents, its overall portability, and the additional features it possesses.

Power & Run Time

The DuroMax XP12000X in use

The DuroMax XP12000X

The DuroMax XP12000X is powered by a 457 cc OHV 4-stroke engine. It delivers 120/240V, runs on gasoline and offers a running wattage of 9,500W as well as a peak wattage of 12,000W.

The generator is rated for a noise of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a dishwasher). Its starting mechanisms include a simple traditional pull-start mechanism and a practical and straightforward electric starter (battery included).

Thanks to a fuel capacity of 8.3 gallons, the XP12000X can operate for up to 19 hours with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.44 GPH).

As the XP12000X has a relatively high THD (<12%), it is not recommended to use it to power sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel is equipped with the following 7 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

Despite not meeting the 'RV Ready' criteria, this DuroMax generator grants the advantage of simple RV compatibility via its L5-30R receptacle, enabling you to conveniently power your RV by using an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, since the XP12000X bears a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it is easily connectible to a breaker box and can power your home in case of a power outage.

Portability

With dimensions of L29 x W30 x H26 in, the standard open frame design of the DuroMax XP12000X provides stability and easy maintenance access to components, as well as good air circulation. The generator is designed for ideal use outdoors and in rough environments.

Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 230 lbs make it incredibly difficult to manually lift and transport. Still, once it is on the ground, its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle can easily solve the issue of low mobility and allow for easy relocation of the device.

Features

The XP12000X's control panel

The control panel of the XP12000X is equipped with a convenient meter, showing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours metrics, aiding in monitoring its status and activity.

In addition to this info, a light indicator allows you to instantly see if the oil level is too low.

The generator allows for a quick, easy and convenient assessment of its gas level, as it is equipped with a built-in fuel gauge.

In terms of security, the generator features an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, ensuring peace of mind during its use.

The XP12000X also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.

Besides the classic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, the DuroMax XP12000X also comes with some accessories: tool kit and funnel are included.

The DuroMax XP12000X versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP12000X compare to generators of similar power (between 9000 and 10000 W).

  • Having a dry weight of 230 lbs, the DuroMax XP12000X belongs in the expected weight range for generators which produce 9000 to 10000 rated watts. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc, standing at just 187.4 lbs.
  • Since the generator's noise is rated at 74 dBA, it has the roughly average expected noise for a device of similar power. If noise level is one your key decisive factors, you may find the DuroMax XP11000iH appealing. It's rated at 61 dBA, making it one of the quietest generators in its power range.
  • Among its devices with similar power, the XP12000X offers one of the higher run times, running for up to 19 hours at 25% load. Concerning the run times, one of the several devices with a comparable output, offering the highest autonomy, is the DuroMax XP11500EH, which is able to run for up to 20 hours.
  • Run time is a key metric, but it's dependent on the generator's fuel tank capacity. Therefore, discussing fuel efficiency is necessary for a complete understanding. With a fuel consumption rate around 0.44 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load, this generator is one of the more fuel-efficient models within the aforementioned wattage range. To prioritize fuel savings, we advise considering the DuroMax XP11000iH, which stands out for its gasoline efficiency, consuming just 0.39 gallons per hour.
