Zoom on the DuroMax XP12000HX
In summary, the DuroMax XP12000HX is a powerful portable generator especially useful for:
- Prudent homeowners who want a full backup power source in case of a power outage
- Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working
The subsequent sections will explore in detail its power characteristics, the diverse outlets it provides, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it offers.
Power & Run Time
With its dual-fuel technology, the powerful and versatile DuroMax XP12000HX provides an output of 120/240V. While gasoline-powered, it gives a running wattage of 9,500W along with a peak wattage of 12,000W. While propane-powered, it provides 9,025 rated watts and 11,400 starting watts.
Enjoying a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a shower), this generator can be started thanks to a simple traditional pull-start mechanism, but also to an intuitive and practical electric starter (battery included).
In terms of run time, the XP12000HX, boasting a 8.3 gallons fuel tank, can run for up to 19 hours on a full tank of gasoline (with fuel consumption averaging 0.92 gallons per hour). Additionally, it provides up to 7 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.67 GPH) of operation with propane.
The powering of sensitive electronic devices with the XP12000HX is not recommended due to its relatively high THD (<12%).
Outlets
The control panel is equipped with the following 7 AC outlets:
Despite not having the 'RV Ready' status, this DuroMax generator provides the benefit of convenient RV compatibility through its L5-30R receptacle, enabling you to easily power your RV using an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, thanks to its twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the XP12000HX is transfer switch ready, facilitating easy hookup to your breaker box to provide backup power for your home during blackouts.
Portability
With dimensions of L29 x W30 x H26 in, the standard open frame design of the DuroMax XP12000HX provides stability and easy maintenance access to components, as well as good air circulation. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.
Despite its weight of 230 lbs, the generator is considered 'portable,' signifying its capability to be moved, albeit its heaviness may hinder easy transport. Still, once it is on the ground, its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle can easily solve the issue of low mobility and allow for easy relocation of the device.
Features
To facilitate status and activity monitoring, a convenient meter, offering voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours readings are embedded in the control panel of the XP12000HX.
In addition to this info, the generator's light indicator provides visual feedback when the oil level is too low.
With its built-in fuel gauge, the generator provides quick and convenient gas level checks.
As far as security is concerned, the generator comes with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, providing peace of mind during use.
The XP12000HX also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.
While the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), helpful for starting the device promptly, come with the DuroMax XP12000HX, the following accessories are also included: tool kit, funnel and propane hose.

The DuroMax XP12000HX versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP12000HX compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 9000 and 10000 W).
- With a weight of 230 lbs, the DuroMax XP12000HX is notably on the heaviest side among dual fuel generators in the 9000-10000 rated wattage range. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc, standing at just 187.4 lbs.
- This generator, with its lowest possible noise rated at 74 dBA falls into the more noisy category, compared to other devices of a similar running wattage. If you are concerned with noise, check out the DuroMax XP11000iH, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, with a noise rating of just 61 dBA.
- As for its runtime, the XP12000HX runs for around 9 hours at a 50% load, placing it towards the low end among comparable dual fuel products. If run time is one of your main concerns, the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc could be worth looking at. It boasts one of the highest run times among units of comparable power, lasting around 12 hours.
- Though run time is a significant parameter, it's closely tied to the generator's fuel tank size. To get a comprehensive understanding, fuel efficiency must also be taken into account. This generator is rather wasteful, compared to other devices within the aforementioned output range, when it comes to gasoline consumption, as it reaches roughly 0.92 GPH at a 50% load. If fuel consumption is your top priority, we suggest to check out the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc, which has a fuel consumption of only 0.66 GPH and thus, is one of the most efficient devices in our database.
Here's a list of the most popular specific comparisons:
