Zoom on the DuroMax XP12000HX

In a nutshell, the DuroMax XP12000HX is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • Small homeowners in search of a full power backup solution
  • Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure

In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device, along with its emission compliance information.

Power & Run Time

The DuroMax XP12000HX in use

The DuroMax XP12000HX

Thanks to its dual-fuel technology, the DuroMax XP12000HX delivers 120/240V and offers power and versatility. When gasoline-powered, it benefits from a running wattage of 9500W and a peak wattage of 12000W. When propane-powered, it has 9025 rated watts and 11400 peak watts.

The generator features a simple traditional pull-start mechanism and also a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). It is rated for a noise of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a vacuum cleaner).

The running time of the XP12000HX, with its 8.3 gallons fuel capacity, can reach around 8.8 hours at 50% load on a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.94 GPH). With propane, it can reach around 3.6 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.31 GPH).

The quite high THD (<12%) of the XP12000HX makes it unsuitable for powering sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel features the following 7 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

Even though this DuroMax generator isn't quite RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle allows an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, due to the featured twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the XP12000HX is transfer switch ready: you may connect it to a breaker box to power your household during a power outage.

Portability

The design of the DuroMax XP12000HX is a typical, open frame, with the dimensions of L29 x W30 x H26 in, offering support and stability and enabling the possibility of raising it above ground level. The device has been designed for tough environments and demanding outdoor use.

As the generator's weight is 230 pounds, manually moving it or transporting it may be challenging, despite the fact that it is technically considered 'portable' (movable). Nevertheless, it can still be moved quite conveniently with the help of its wheel kit and its folding handle, once it is placed on the ground.

Features

The XP12000HX's control panel

To help you monitor the XP12000HX's status and activity, its control panel is equipped with a convenient meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours.

In addition to this info, when its oil levels are insufficient, you will be informed by the featured light indicator.

The fuel level of the generator can be determined quickly, easily, and conveniently with the help of its built-in fuel gauge.

From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), giving you a peace of mind during use.

The XP12000HX also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes. It’s a welcomed additional security feature, but don’t forget to always take your generator outside (opens in a new tab).

While the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), helpful for starting the device promptly, come with the DuroMax XP12000HX, the following accessories are also included: funnel, propane hose and tool kit.

Emissions

The DuroMax XP12000HX is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Therefore, its sale and purchase are permitted in all of the 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, so it is adequate for use in forested areas.

The DuroMax XP12000HX versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP12000HX compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 9000 and 10000 W).

  • Considering its dry weight of 230 pounds, the DuroMax XP12000HX is one of the heavier dual fuel generators producing between 9000 and 10000 running watts. If weight matters to you, one of the champions in this power range is the Pulsar PG12000B with only 205 pounds.
  • The generator can be considered average in its noise for its type and power category, as it is rated at 74 dBA. If you are concerned with noise, check out the A-iPower SUA12000ED, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, with a noise rating of just 69 dBA.
  • Regarding its autonomy, the autonomy of the XP12000HX, reaching around 8.8 hours at a 50% load, can be considered as low end, compared to other dual fuel products of a roughly equal output. Furthermore, considering the run times, one of the generators which have a roughly same power output, with the highest autonomy, is the Westinghouse WGen9500DF, as it provides around 12 hours.
  • Even though run times are undoubtedly important, they are dependent on the fuel capacity to a large extent. For a more wholesome picture, we must take into consideration the fuel consumption of the generator. In fact, this generator is not among the most fuel efficient, within the aforementioned wattage range : its estimated gasoline consumption at 50% load is around 0.94 GPH. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the Westinghouse WGen9500DF, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.55 GPH, may be the right generator for you.
According to our stats, the following comparison is pretty popular: DuroMax XP12000HX vs DuroMax XP12000EH.

Price comparison

As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 9000-10000W dual fuel generators, the DuroMax XP12000HX is on the expensive side of the price range.

While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.

The bottom line
