Description
The XP12000HX is the BEAST of the HX Series with 12,000-watts of POWER. This unit provides the power normally found in stationary home standby generators but in a more affordable, portable package! With a 457cc OHV DuroMax Engine, this workhorse is PERFECT for HOME BACK-UP.
Zoom on the DuroMax XP12000HX
In short, the DuroMax XP12000HX is a powerful portable generator adequately designed for:
- Small homeowners in search of a full power backup solution
- Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment
The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the extra features it benefits from.
Power & Run Time
Featuring dual-fuel technology, the DuroMax XP12000HX provides 120/240V, and offers both power and versatility. Running on gasoline, it delivers a running wattage of 9,500W and a starting wattage of 12,000W. When propane-powered, it offers 9,025 running watts and 11,400 starting watts.
At a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a dishwasher), this generator can be started via a classic hand-operated recoil starting mechanism, or a user-friendly and efficient electric starter (battery included).
In terms of run time, the XP12000HX, boasting a 8.3 gallons fuel tank, can run for up to 19 hours on a full tank of gasoline (with fuel consumption averaging 0.44 gallons per hour). Additionally, it provides up to 7 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.67 GPH) of operation with propane.
Due to the relatively high THD (<12%) of the XP12000HX, it is advised against using it for powering sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel provides the upcoming 7 AC outlets:
While not classified as 'RV Ready,' this DuroMax generator can still provides the advantage of RV connection via its L5-30R receptacle, ensuring power supply to your RV with an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, since it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the XP12000HX is tailored to be transfer switch ready, making it easy to connect it to your breaker box for home power support during outages.
Portability
At L29 x W30 x H26 in, the traditional open frame structure of the DuroMax XP12000HX ensures stability while facilitating convenient maintenance access to components and promoting air cooling. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.
Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 230 lbs make it incredibly difficult to manually lift and transport. However, the constrained maneuverability is addressed with the assistance of its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle, allowing for easy shifting once the generator is placed on the ground.
Features
For convenient monitoring of its status and activity, the control panel of the XP12000HX includes a convenient meter, showing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours metrics.
In addition to this info, a light indicator shows you if the oil level is too low.
Thanks to its built-in fuel gauge, the generator allows you to quickly, conveniently, and easily check the gas level at a glance.
As far as security is concerned, the generator comes with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), providing peace of mind during use.
The XP12000HX also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.
Apart from the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to facilitate setup, the DuroMax XP12000HX features extra accessories: tool kit, propane hose and funnel.

The DuroMax XP12000HX versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP12000HX compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 9000 and 10000 W).
- With a weight of 230 lbs, the DuroMax XP12000HX is notably on the heaviest side among dual fuel generators in the 9000-10000 rated wattage range. If weight is an important consideration for you, the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc stands out as one of the top contenders in this power category, with a dry weight of 187.4 pounds.
- Among the generators of a comparable running wattage, this generator with a lowest noise of 74 dBA can be judged as noisy. If you'd like a less noisy alternative, the DuroMax XP11000iH is a strong contender. It boasts a noise rating of 61 dBA, placing it among the quietest generators in its power category.
- Compared to dual fuel devices of similar power, the XP12000HX stands out with one of the higher run times, lasting up to 19 hours at 25% load. Concerning the run times, one of the several devices with a comparable output, offering the highest autonomy, is the DuroMax XP11500EH, which is able to run for up to 20 hours.
- Autonomy holds its importance, however, it is largely dependent on the generator’s fuel capacity and so, it is nonsensible to discuss it without mentioning fuel efficiency as well. The generator burns fuel at a rate of around 0.44 GPH when running at a 25% load, which is consistent with the average fuel usage of models of comparable power output. To prioritize fuel savings, we advise considering the DuroMax XP11000iH, which stands out for its gasoline efficiency, consuming just 0.39 gallons per hour.
Here's a list of the most popular specific comparisons:
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 9000-10000W dual fuel generators, the DuroMax XP12000HX is on the expensive side of the price range.
While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.
The bottom line
- Dual fuel
- CO Alert technology
- GFCI Outlets
- 4 different AC outlet types
- Electric start
- High run time
- Decent fuel efficiency
- On the expensive side
- No remote start
- On the heavy side (230 lbs)
