Description

Zoom on the DuroMax XP12000DX

In summary, the DuroMax XP12000DX is a powerful portable generator especially useful for:

  • Prudent homeowners who want a backup power source in case of a power outage
  • Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment

In the upcoming sections, you'll discover its power characteristics, the array of outlets it presents, its overall portability, and the additional features it possesses.

Power & Run Time

The DuroMax XP12000DX in use

The DuroMax XP12000DX

Featuring dual-fuel technology, the DuroMax XP12000DX provides 120/240V, and offers both power and versatility. Running on gasoline, it delivers a running wattage of 9,500W and a starting wattage of 12,000W. When propane-powered, it offers 9,025 running watts and 11,400 starting watts.

Featuring a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a vacuum cleaner), the generator is equipped with both a manual recoil starter system and a user-friendly and efficient electric starter (battery included) for starting.

In terms of its run time capability, the XP12000DX, furnished with a 8.3 gallons fuel tank, can maintain operations for up to 19 hours on a full tank of gasoline (with fuel consumption averaging 0.44 gallons per hour). It also provides up to 7 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.67 GPH) of operation with propane.

Since the XP12000DX has a somewhat high THD (<12%), it is advisable to not use it for the powering of sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel includes the following 7 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

While this DuroMax generator is not RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle can be used for a simple RV connection with an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, thanks to its twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the XP12000DX is transfer switch ready, facilitating easy hookup to your breaker box to provide backup power for your home during blackouts.

Portability

With its L29 x W30 x H26 in dimensions, the open frame structure of the DuroMax XP12000DX guarantees stability, simplified maintenance access to components, and better air cooling than enclosed units. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.

While technically classified as 'portable' due to its ability to be moved, the 230 lbs of this generator make manual lifting and transportation incredibly difficult. However, the limited maneuverability is remedied with its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle, facilitating convenient shifting once the generator is positioned on the ground.

Features

The XP12000DX's control panel

The XP12000DX's status and activity may be monitored conveniently via the control panel, as it features a convenient meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours.

In addition to this info, a light indicator shows you if the oil level is too low.

The inclusion of a built-in fuel gauge in the generator streamlines gas level checks for quick and convenient assessments.

From a security standpoint, the generator is furnished with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), ensuring peace of mind during operation.

The XP12000DX also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.

Alongside the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) for quick setup, the DuroMax XP12000DX is bundled with additional accessories: tool kit, funnel and propane hose.

The DuroMax XP12000DX versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP12000DX compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 9000 and 10000 W).

  • At a dry weight of 230 pounds, the DuroMax XP12000DX is one of the heaviest dual fuel devices which can produce between 9000 and 10000 running watts. Weight-conscious users may find the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc appealing, as it is one of the top contenders in this power range, weighing just 187.4 pounds.
  • This generator, with its lowest possible noise rated at 74 dBA falls into the more noisy category, compared to other devices of a similar running wattage. For those who are looking for a less noisy device, we suggest the DuroMax XP11000iH. With just 61 dBA, it is one of the most quiet devices in this power range.
  • Since the XP12000DX boasts with a run time of up to 19 hours at 25% load, it can be safely judged as a device of a higher run time than most dual fuel generators of a comparable output. If runtime is a priority for you, the DuroMax XP11500EH stands out as one of the generators with the longest run time in its power range, providing up to 20 hours of continuous use.
  • While run time matters, it's heavily influenced by the fuel tank's capacity. Hence, it's important to consider fuel efficiency alongside. As this generator uses an estimated 0.44 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 25% load, it finds itself in the average gasoline consumption range of similar products. To prioritize fuel savings, we advise considering the DuroMax XP11000iH, which stands out for its gasoline efficiency, consuming just 0.39 gallons per hour.
