Description

Zoom on the DuroMax XP12000DX

In summary, the DuroMax XP12000DX is a powerful portable generator especially useful for:

  • Prudent homeowners who want a backup power source in case of a power outage
  • Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment

In the upcoming sections, you'll discover its power characteristics, the array of outlets it presents, its overall portability, and the additional features it possesses.

Power & Run Time

The DuroMax XP12000DX in use

The DuroMax XP12000DX

Featuring dual-fuel technology, the DuroMax XP12000DX provides 120/240V, and offers both power and versatility. Running on gasoline, it delivers a running wattage of 9,500W and a starting wattage of 12,000W. When propane-powered, it offers 9,025 running watts and 11,400 starting watts.

Featuring a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a vacuum cleaner), the generator is equipped with both a manual recoil starter system and a user-friendly and efficient electric starter (battery included) for starting.

In terms of its run time capability, the XP12000DX, furnished with a 8.3 gallons fuel tank, can maintain operations for up to 19 hours on a full tank of gasoline (with fuel consumption averaging 0.44 gallons per hour). It also provides up to 7 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.67 GPH) of operation with propane.

Since the XP12000DX has a somewhat high THD (<12%), it is advisable to not use it for the powering of sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel includes the following 7 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

While this DuroMax generator is not RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle can be used for a simple RV connection with an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, thanks to its twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the XP12000DX is transfer switch ready, facilitating easy hookup to your breaker box to provide backup power for your home during blackouts.

Portability

With its L29 x W30 x H26 in dimensions, the open frame structure of the DuroMax XP12000DX guarantees stability, simplified maintenance access to components, and better air cooling than enclosed units. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.

While technically classified as 'portable' due to its ability to be moved, the 230 lbs of this generator make manual lifting and transportation incredibly difficult. However, the limited maneuverability is remedied with its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle, facilitating convenient shifting once the generator is positioned on the ground.

Features

The XP12000DX's control panel

The XP12000DX's status and activity may be monitored conveniently via the control panel, as it features a convenient meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours.

In addition to this info, a light indicator shows you if the oil level is too low.

The inclusion of a built-in fuel gauge in the generator streamlines gas level checks for quick and convenient assessments.

From a security standpoint, the generator is furnished with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), ensuring peace of mind during operation.

The XP12000DX also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.

Alongside the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) for quick setup, the DuroMax XP12000DX is bundled with additional accessories: tool kit, funnel and propane hose.

The DuroMax XP12000DX versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP12000DX compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 9000 and 10000 W).

  • With its weight of 230 lbs, the DuroMax XP12000DX is one of the heaviest dual fuel generators in the 9000-10000 rated wattage category. If weight is your top priority, one of the champions in this power category is the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc, weighing just 187.4 pounds.
  • If compared to generators capable of producing a similar running wattage, this generator with a lowest emitted noise of 74 dBA can be considered somewhat noisy. If you wish to prioritize minimal noise, the DuroMax XP11000iH stands out as one of the quietest options among generators of similar power, with a rating of 61 dBA.
  • The XP12000DX, offering a run time of around 9 hours with a full tank at a 50% load, falls within the average autonomy range when compared to its peers. If prolonged run time is essential to your needs, you could consider the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc, which offers one of the highest autonomy among devices with similar power output, lasting around 12 hours.
  • The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. When it comes to fuel efficiency among generators with similar wattage, this generator lags behind, with a consumption rate of 0.92 GPH at a 50% load. If gasoline efficiency is at the top of your list, you may want to have a look at the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc, which has great fuel efficiency, with a gas consumption of only 0.66 gallons per hour.
