Description
Zoom on the DuroMax XP12000DX
In a nutshell, the DuroMax XP12000DX is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards:
- Prudent homeowners who want a backup power source in case of a power outage
- Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed, including its emission compliance information.
Power & Run Time
With its dual-fuel technology, the powerful and versatile DuroMax XP12000DX provides an output of 120/240V. While gasoline-powered, it gives a running wattage of 9,500W along with a peak wattage of 12,000W. While propane-powered, it provides 9,025 rated watts and 11,400 starting watts.
The generator features a simple traditional pull-start mechanism and also a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). It is rated for a noise of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a dishwasher).
Regarding its running time, the XP12000DX, with a 8.3 gallons fuel capacity can operate for up to 19 hours with a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.92 GPH). When using propane, it can run for up to 7 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.67 GPH).
As the XP12000DX has a relatively high THD (<12%), it is not recommended to use it to power sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel features the upcoming 7 AC outlets:
Even though this DuroMax generator isn't quite RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle allows an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, as the XP12000DX holds a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: you'll easily be able to connect it to your breaker box to power your home during a power outage.
Portability
The design of the DuroMax XP12000DX is a typical, open frame, with the dimensions of L29 x W30 x H26 in, offering support and stability and enabling the possibility of raising it above ground level. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.
Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 230 pounds. Nevertheless, thanks to its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.
Features
The XP12000DX's control center features a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours to aid you with the monitoring of its status and activity.
In addition to this info, when the oil level is too low, you will be informed by the featured light indicator.
The fuel level of the generator can be determined quickly, easily, and conveniently with the help of its built-in fuel gauge.
Security-wise, this product benefits from an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.
The XP12000DX also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.
With the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), letting you start the generator quickly, the DuroMax XP12000DX also comes with several accessories, including: funnel, tool kit and propane hose.
Emissions
The DuroMax XP12000DX is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Therefore, its sale and purchase are permitted in all of the 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, which makes it suitable for use in forested areas.

The DuroMax XP12000DX versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP12000DX compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 9000 and 10000 W).
- As its dry weight is 230 pounds, the DuroMax XP12000DX is one of the heavier of the dual fuel products which can generate 9000 to 10000 running watts. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Pulsar PG12000B, standing at just 205 lbs.
- This generator has a somewhat average expected noise for its type and power range, rated at 74 dBA. If you are concerned with noise, check out the A-iPower SUA12000ED, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, with a noise rating of just 69 dBA.
- Given that the XP12000DX reaches an autonomy of around 9 hours with a full tank and at 50% load, it is placed within the average autonomy range of similarly powerful dual fuel generators. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the Pulsar G12KBN, with around 12 hours.
- Even though run times are undoubtedly important, they are dependent on the fuel capacity to a large extent. For a more wholesome picture, we must take into consideration the fuel consumption of the generator. This generator has an estimated fuel consumption of roughly 0.92 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load, rendering it somewhat average compared to devices of a similar output. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.67 GPH, the Pulsar G12KBN is a device you could look out for.
Price comparison
As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 9000-10000W dual fuel generators, the DuroMax XP12000DX is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
The bottom line
- Inexpensive
- CO Alert technology
- Several accessories included
- GFCI Outlets
- Electric start
- Dual Fuel
- Acceptable noise (74 dBA)
- Decent run time
- Decent fuel efficiency
- No remote start
- On the heavy side (230 lbs)
