Description

The XP10000HX is the most versatile model of the HX Series with 10,000 watts of POWER. This unit provides the power normally found in stationary home standby generators but in a more affordable, portable package! With a 440cc OHV DuroMax Engine, this workhorse is PERFECT for HOME BACK-UP and can power most household essentials. (source: DuroMax (opens in a new tab))

Zoom on the DuroMax XP10000HX

In summary, the DuroMax XP10000HX is a portable generator especially useful for:

  • Food truck owners who want to ensure that their business is fully self-contained and does not rely on potentially unreliable external power
  • Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials
  • Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment

In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device, along with its emission compliance information.

Power & Run Time

The DuroMax XP10000HX in use

The DuroMax XP10000HX

With its dual-fuel technology, the powerful and versatile DuroMax XP10000HX provides an output of 120/240V. While gasoline-powered, it gives a running wattage of 8000W along with a peak wattage of 10000W. While propane-powered, it provides 7600 rated watts and 9500 starting watts.

Enjoying a noise rating of 72 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a vacuum cleaner), this generator can be started thanks to a conventional pull-start mechanism, but also to a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included).

The XP10000HX, with a fuel capacity of 8.3 gallons, reaches a run time of around 10.4 hours at 50% load utilizing gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.8 GPH). Alternatively, it can reach a run time of around 4.3 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.09 GPH) with propane.

The quite high THD (<12%) of the XP10000HX makes it unsuitable for powering sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel features the following 7 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

This DuroMax generator features an L5-30R receptacle, enabling an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. However, it is still not quite RV ready. Besides, as the XP10000HX holds a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: you'll easily be able to connect it to your breaker box to power your home during a power outage.

Portability

The design of the DuroMax XP10000HX is a typical, open frame, with the dimensions of L29 x W30 x H26 in, offering support and stability and enabling the possibility of raising it above ground level. The device has been designed for tough environments and demanding outdoor use.

Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 228 pounds. Nevertheless, thanks to its wheel kit and its folding handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.

Features

Panel of the DuroMax XP10000HX

The XP10000HX's control panel

The XP10000HX and its control panel include a convenient meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours. This feature comes handy when monitoring its status and activity.

In addition to this info, a light indicator serves to show you when its oil levels are insufficient.

A built-in fuel gauge allows for a quick, easy and convenient check of the fuel level of the generator.

From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), giving you a peace of mind during use.

The XP10000HX also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes. It’s a welcomed additional security feature, but don’t forget to always take your generator outside (opens in a new tab).

Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the DuroMax XP10000HX also is packed along with the following accessories: funnel, tool kit and propane hose.

Emissions

The DuroMax XP10000HX is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. It can therefore be sold and purchased in all 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, so it is adequate for use in forested areas.

The DuroMax XP10000HX versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP10000HX compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 7500 and 8500 W).

  • A weight of 228 lbs makes the DuroMax XP10000HX one of the heavier dual fuel devices in the 7500-8500 rated wattage range. If weight matters to you, one of the champions in this power range is the Cummins Onan P9500df with only 194 pounds.
  • This generator has a somewhat average expected noise for its type and power range, rated at 72 dBA. If you are concerned with noise, check out the Genmax GM9000iED, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, with a noise rating of just 62 dBA.
  • Regarding its autonomy, the autonomy of the XP10000HX, reaching around 10.4 hours at a 50% load, can be considered as low end, compared to other dual fuel products of a roughly equal output. If autonomy is your priority, one of the devices of a similar power output with the highest run time is the Firman H07552, reaching around 12 hours.
  • The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. In fact, this generator is not among the most fuel efficient, within the aforementioned wattage range : its estimated gasoline consumption at 50% load is around 0.8 GPH. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.55 GPH, the Pulsar PG10000B16 is a device you could look out for.
According to our stats, the following comparison is pretty popular: DuroMax XP10000HX vs DuroMax XP10000EH.
