Zoom on the DuroMax XP10000HX

In summary, the DuroMax XP10000HX is a portable generator especially useful for:

  • Food truck owners who do not wish to see their business interrupted under any circumstances
  • Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
  • Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment

In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed, including its emission compliance information.

Power & Run Time

The DuroMax XP10000HX in use

The DuroMax XP10000HX

Thanks to its dual-fuel technology, the DuroMax XP10000HX delivers 120/240V and offers power and versatility. When gasoline-powered, it benefits from a running wattage of 8,000W and a peak wattage of 10,000W. When propane-powered, it has 7,600 rated watts and 9,500 peak watts.

Enjoying a noise rating of 72 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a dishwasher), this generator can be started thanks to a conventional pull-start mechanism, but also to a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included).

The XP10000HX, with a fuel capacity of 8.3 gallons, reaches a run time of up to 22 hours utilizing gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.83 GPH). Alternatively, it can reach a run time of up to 8.5 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.55 GPH) with propane.

The powering of sensitive electronic devices with the XP10000HX is not recommended due to its relatively high THD (<12%).

Outlets

The control panel provides the upcoming 7 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

This DuroMax generator isn't quite RV Ready, but it features an L5-30R receptacle, allowing a simple RV connection through an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, as the XP10000HX holds a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: you'll easily be able to connect it to your breaker box to power your home during a power outage.

Portability

The design of the DuroMax XP10000HX is a typical, open frame, with the dimensions of L29 x W30 x H26 in, offering support and stability and enabling the possibility of raising it above ground level. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.

Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 228 pounds. Still, once it is on the ground, its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle can easily solve the issue of low mobility and allow for easy relocation of the device.

Features

The XP10000HX's control panel

The XP10000HX and its control panel include a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours. This feature comes handy when monitoring its status and activity.

In addition to this info, when the oil level is too low, you will be informed by the featured light indicator.

The generator includes a built-in fuel gauge, a quick, easy and convenient method of checking the device’s gas level.

Security-wise, this product benefits from an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.

The XP10000HX also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.

Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the DuroMax XP10000HX also is packed along with the following accessories: funnel, propane hose and tool kit.

Emissions

The DuroMax XP10000HX is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Thus, selling and purchasing this generator is allowed in each of the 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, making it usable in forested areas.

The DuroMax XP10000HX versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP10000HX compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 7500 and 8500 W).

  • A weight of 228 lbs makes the DuroMax XP10000HX one of the heavier dual fuel devices in the 7500-8500 rated wattage range. If weight matters to you, one of the champions in this power range is the Cummins Onan P9500df with only 194 pounds.
  • This generator has a somewhat average expected noise for its type and power range, rated at 72 dBA. If you are concerned with noise, check out the Genmax GM9000iED, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, with a noise rating of just 62 dBA.
  • With a run time of up to 22 hours at 25% load, the XP10000HX has one of the highest run times, compared to its similarly powerful peers.
  • Autonomy holds its importance, however, it is largely dependent on the generator’s fuel capacity and so, it is nonsensible to discuss it without mentioning fuel efficiency as well. This generator, with an estimated fuel consumption of just 0.38 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load, is one of the more fuel efficient generators, for the previously mentioned wattage range. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.35 GPH, the DuroMax XP9000iH is a device you could look out for.
According to our stats, the following comparison is pretty popular: DuroMax XP10000HX vs DuroMax XP10000EH.

Price comparison

As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 7500-8500W dual fuel generators, the DuroMax XP10000HX is on the average side of the price range.
