Description
The XP10000HX is the most versatile model of the HX Series with 10,000 watts of POWER. This unit provides the power normally found in stationary home standby generators but in a more affordable, portable package! With a 440cc OHV DuroMax Engine, this workhorse is PERFECT for HOME BACK-UP and can power most household essentials.
Zoom on the DuroMax XP10000HX
In a nutshell, the DuroMax XP10000HX is a portable generator mostly geared towards:
- Food truck owners who do not wish to see their business interrupted under any circumstances
- Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
- Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed.
Power & Run Time
Thanks to its dual-fuel technology, the DuroMax XP10000HX delivers 120/240V and offers power and versatility. When gasoline-powered, it benefits from a running wattage of 8,000W and a peak wattage of 10,000W. When propane-powered, it has 7,600 rated watts and 9,500 peak watts.
The generator is rated for a noise of 72 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a shower). Its starting mechanisms include a standard recoil pull-rope starting mechanism and a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included).
Regarding its running time, the XP10000HX, with a 8.3 gallons fuel tank, can operate for up to 22 hours with a full gasoline tank (with fuel consumption estimated at around 0.38 gallons per hour). It also offers up to 8.5 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.55 GPH) of operation when using propane.
As the XP10000HX exhibits a THD of less than 12%, which is relatively high, it is best avoided for powering sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel includes the following 7 AC outlets:
This DuroMax generator features an L5-30R receptacle, enabling an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. However, it is still not quite RV ready. Besides, as it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the XP10000HX is transfer switch ready: in case of a power outage, you will be easily able to connect it to a breaker box and power your household.
Portability
With dimensions of L29 x W30 x H26 in, the traditional open frame design of the DuroMax XP10000HX ensures stability while allowing easy maintenance access to components and promoting effective air cooling. The generator is designed for ideal use outdoors and in rough environments.
Even at 228 lbs, the generator is categorized as 'portable,' suggesting its movability, although its weight may impede its portability. Nevertheless, thanks to its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.
Features
The control panel of the XP10000HX includes a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours, helpful for the monitoring of its status and activity.
In addition to this info, the device’s light indicator will display if the oil level is too low.
The generator includes a built-in fuel gauge, a quick, easy and convenient method of checking the device’s gas level.
From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, giving you a peace of mind during use.
The XP10000HX also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.
Besides the classic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, the DuroMax XP10000HX also comes with some accessories: tool kit, propane hose and funnel are included.

The DuroMax XP10000HX versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP10000HX compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 7500 and 8500 W).
- With its weight of 228 lbs, the DuroMax XP10000HX is one of the heavier dual fuel generators in the 7500-8500 rated wattage category. If weight is a key factor for your needs, the Pulsar PGL9000BCO is noteworthy for being one of the top contenders in this power range, with a dry weight of 149 pounds.
- This generator has a somewhat average expected noise for its type and power range, rated at 72 dBA. If you'd like a less noisy alternative, the DuroMax XP9500iH is a strong contender. It boasts a noise rating of 61 dBA, placing it among the quietest generators in its power category.
- At 25% load, the XP10000HX boasts one of the highest run times than most similarly powerful dual fuel products, reaching up to 22 hours.
- While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank's capacity and thus, doesn't say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. This generator can be considered as fuel-efficient, due to its low estimated fuel consumption of only 0.38 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load, within the aforementioned wattage range. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.34 GPH, the DuroMax XP9500iH is a device you could look out for.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 7500-8500W dual fuel generators, the DuroMax XP10000HX is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
The bottom line
