Zoom on the DuroMax XP10000HX

In a nutshell, the DuroMax XP10000HX is a portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • Food van owners who know that just a short power outage could lose them hundreds of dollars
  • Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
  • Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure

In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device, along with its emission compliance information.

Power & Run Time

The DuroMax XP10000HX in use

The DuroMax XP10000HX

The dual-fuel technology of the DuroMax XP10000HX allows for an output of 120/240V and provides superb power and versatility. If gasoline-powered, the device provides a running wattage of 8,000W and a starting wattage of 10,000W. If propane-powered, it gives 7,600 rated watts and 9,500 starting watts.

Enjoying a noise rating of 72 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a dishwasher), this generator can be started thanks to a simple traditional pull-start mechanism, but also to a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included).

With a fuel capacity of 8.3 gallons, the XP10000HX can operate for up to 22 hours using gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.38 GPH), or for up to 8.5 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.55 GPH) using propane.

The XP10000HX is unsuitable for the powering of sensitive electronic devices due to its relatively high THD (<12%).

Outlets

The control panel provides the upcoming 7 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

Even though this DuroMax generator isn't quite RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle allows an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, due to the featured twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the XP10000HX is transfer switch ready: you may connect it to a breaker box to power your household during a power outage.

Portability

The dimensions of the DuroMax XP10000HX, which are L29 x W30 x H26 in, and its typical, open frame design provides stability and enables the generator to be raised above ground level. The generator is designed for ideal use outdoors and in rough environments.

As the generator's weight is 228 pounds, manually moving it or transporting it may be challenging, despite the fact that it is technically considered 'portable' (movable). Nevertheless, it can still be moved quite conveniently with the help of its wheel kit (⌀10") and its folding handle, once it is placed on the ground.

Features

The XP10000HX's control panel

To help you monitor the XP10000HX's status and activity, its control panel is equipped with a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours.

In addition to this info, when the oil level is too low, you will be informed by the featured light indicator.

The fuel level of the generator can be determined quickly, easily, and conveniently with the help of its built-in fuel gauge.

From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, giving you a peace of mind during use.

The XP10000HX also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes.

With the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), letting you start the generator quickly, the DuroMax XP10000HX also comes with several accessories, including: tool kit, funnel and propane hose.

Emissions

The DuroMax XP10000HX is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Thus, selling and purchasing this generator is allowed in each of the 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, making it usable in forested areas.

The DuroMax XP10000HX versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP10000HX compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 7500 and 8500 W).

  • With its weight of 228 lbs, the DuroMax XP10000HX is one of the heavier dual fuel generators in the 7500-8500 rated wattage category. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the Cummins Onan P9500df, with a dry weight of just 194 pounds.
  • Since the generator's noise is rated at 72 dBA, it has the roughly average expected noise for a device of similar type and power. If you’d prefer a less noisy device, one of the most quiet devices, which share the same power range with this one, is the Pulsar PGD95BiSCO, whose lowest noise levels reach just 62 dBA.
  • Thanks to an impressive running time of up to 22 hours at 25% load, the XP10000HX benefits from one of the highest run times among dual fuel generators of a similar output.
  • Autonomy holds its importance, however, it is largely dependent on the generator’s fuel capacity and so, it is nonsensible to discuss it without mentioning fuel efficiency as well. This generator can be considered as fuel efficient, due to its low estimated fuel consumption of only 0.38 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load, within the aforementioned wattage range. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.35 GPH, the DuroMax XP9000iH is a device you could look out for.
According to our stats, the following comparison is pretty popular: DuroMax XP10000HX vs DuroMax XP10000EH.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 7500-8500W dual fuel generators, the DuroMax XP10000HX is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
