Description
Zoom on the DuroMax XP10000DX
In a nutshell, the DuroMax XP10000DX is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards:
- Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
- Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure
The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, the extra features it benefits from, and any relevant emission compliance details.
Power & Run Time
With its dual-fuel technology, the powerful and versatile DuroMax XP10000DX provides an output of 120/240V. While gasoline-powered, it gives a running wattage of 8,500W along with a peak wattage of 10,000W. While propane-powered, it provides 8,075 rated watts and 9,500 starting watts.
With a noise rating of 72 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a vacuum cleaner), the generator features a simple traditional pull-start mechanism, but also a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included).
The running time of the XP10000DX, with its 8.3 gallons fuel capacity, can reach around 10.4 hours at 50% load on a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.8 GPH). With propane, it can reach around 4.3 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.09 GPH).
Since the XP10000DX has a somewhat high THD (<12%), it is advisable to not use it for the powering of sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel includes the following 7 AC outlets:
This DuroMax generator isn't quite RV Ready, but it features an L5-30R receptacle, allowing a simple RV connection through an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, because the XP10000DX is equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it can power your home during a power outage, as it can be easily connected to your breaker box to power your household.
Portability
The DuroMax XP10000DX has the following dimensions: L29 x W30 x H26 in. In combination with its conventional, open frame design, they provide support and allow the generator to be raised above ground level. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.
Since the generator weighs 220 lbs, it will be incredibly difficult to manually lift it and transport it, even though it is technically considered to 'be portable' (in the sense that it is movable). Nevertheless, it can still be moved quite conveniently with the help of its wheel kit and its folding handle, once it is placed on the ground.
Features
The XP10000DX's status and activity may be monitored conveniently via the control panel, as it features a convenient meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours.
In addition to this info, the device’s light indicator will display if the oil level is too low.
A built-in fuel gauge allows for a quick, easy and convenient check of the fuel level of the generator.
From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, giving you a peace of mind during use.
The XP10000DX also benefits from DuroMax’s CO Alert carbon monoxide shutdown. If CO levels become unsafe or rapidly increase, the generator will automatically shut down, an indicator will light red, and the engine will not restart for 5 minutes. It’s a welcomed additional security feature, but don’t forget to always take your generator outside (opens in a new tab).
Besides the classic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, the DuroMax XP10000DX also comes with some accessories: propane hose, tool kit and funnel are included.
Emissions
The DuroMax XP10000DX is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Therefore, its sale and purchase are permitted in all of the 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor, which makes it suitable for use in forested areas.

The DuroMax XP10000DX versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the DuroMax XP10000DX compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 8000 and 9000 W).
- At a dry weight of 220 pounds, the DuroMax XP10000DX is one of the heavier dual fuel devices which can produce between 8000 and 9000 running watts. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the Sportsman GEN9000DF, with a dry weight of just 200 pounds.
- At a lowest noise rating of 72 dBA, this generator is one of the quieter devices of similar type and power. If noise emissions are one of your priorities, you may be interested in the A-iPower SUA12000ED, one of the least noisy generators similarly powerful as this one, rated for 69 dBA.
- The XP10000DX, falls within the average autonomy range compared to dual fuel generators of a roughly same power, with a run time of around 10.4 hours at a 50% load and a full tank. Concerning the run times, one of the several devices with a comparable output, offering the highest autonomy, is the Pulsar PG10000B16, which is able to run for around 12 hours.
- Autonomy holds its importance, however, it is largely dependent on the generator’s fuel capacity and so, it is nonsensible to discuss it without mentioning fuel efficiency as well. Standing at an estimated 0.8 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load, this generator is somewhat average in this area compared to other devices, within the aforementioned wattage range. If you wish to acquire one of the most gasoline efficient products of this power range, the Pulsar PG10000B16, with a fuel consumption of 0.55 GPH could be in your good books.
Price comparison
As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 8000-9000W dual fuel generators, the DuroMax XP10000DX is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
The bottom line
- In the expected price range
- CO Alert technology
