Power & Run Time

The Cummins Onan P11000iTF

The Cummins Onan P11000iTF delivers 120/240V and benefits from a tri-fuel technology that allows it to run on gasoline, propane, or natural gas. When gasoline-powered, it enjoys a running wattage of 9,000W and a peak wattage of 11,000W. When propane-powered, it benefits from 8,100 rated watts and 10,000 peak watts. Its natural gas operation offers 7,200W of rated wattage and 8,200W of starting wattage. Moreover, since it is parallel capable (parallel kit not included), its power may be increased if linked to a second compatible unit.

The inverter generator is rated for a noise of 64 dBA (just slightly more noisy than background music). Its starting mechanisms include a simple traditional pull-start mechanism and an intuitive and practical electric starter (battery included). Furthermore, for added convenience, the Onan P11000iTF offers remote starting capabilities (key fob included).

The Onan P11000iTF, with a fuel capacity of 7.4 gallons, reaches a run time of up to 16.5 hours utilizing gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.45 GPH). Alternatively, it can reach a run time of up to 6.7 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.7 GPH) with propane.

The Onan P11000iTF ensures a clean sine wave output, boasting <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) to protect your sensitive electronics when connected to its AC outlets.

Outlets

The control panel features the following 4 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120V 30A (TT-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

It also sports 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (USB-A) ideal for charging various electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets.

Thanks to its TT-30R receptacle (TT meaning 'Travel Trailer'), this Cummins generator is RV Ready, ready to power your recreational vehicle with ease.

Cummins' Smart Switch Outlet

Picture of Westinghouse ST Switch outlet

The Onan P11000iTF has an identical outlet, but with a different name

The Onan P11000iTF features a special outlet that allows an automatic power transfer in case of a power outage.

To benefit from this feature, you'll need Cummins' Automatic Transfer Switch, which is not included with the generator.

It is also possible to use the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab) instead, which serves the exact same purpose.

Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without the assistance of an electrician.

Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the Onan P11000iTF to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.

Portability

With an inverter generator design, the Cummins Onan P11000iTF features a closed construction (L30.3 x W25 x H27 in), enhancing aesthetics and ensuring reduced noise levels, offering a distinct advantage over standard, open frame generators. This type of design is the most modern and convenient way to recreationally generate power.

Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 219 lbs make may make it challenging to manually lift and transport. However, its challenging mobility is solved by its set of 2 wheels (⌀8") and its folding handle, which will ease its displacement, once it is on the floor.

Features

The Onan P11000iTF's control panel

For easy status and activity monitoring of the Onan P11000iTF, its control panel integrates a digital data center, offering insights into the lifetime run hours, voltage, frequency, power output and fuel level.

In addition to this info, the generator's light indicators provide visual feedback when the generator is on overload, the generator is ready and its oil levels are insufficient.

Considering security aspects, the generator boasts an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), offering peace of mind throughout operation.

It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.

Apart from the standard documentation and an owner's manual to facilitate setup, the Cummins Onan P11000iTF features extra accessories: battery charger, funnel, propane hose, key fob, oil and tool kit.

The Cummins Onan P11000iTF versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Cummins Onan P11000iTF compare to multi-fuel generators of similar power (between 8500 and 9500 W).

  • Having a dry weight of 219 lbs, the Cummins Onan P11000iTF belongs in the expected weight range for multi-fuel generators which produce 8500 to 9500 rated watts. If weight is a key factor for your needs, the Westinghouse iGen12000DFc is noteworthy for being one of the top contenders in this power range, with a dry weight of 189 pounds.
  • With a lowest possible noise of 64 dBA, this inverter generator places itself amongst the more quiet of the products delivering similar power. If noise emissions are one of your priorities, you may want to take a look at the DuroMax XP11000iHT. It's one of the quietest options among generators of similar power, rated at 61 dBA.
  • As the Onan P11000iTF offers up to 16.5 hours run time on a full tank at a 25% load, it falls within the average autonomy range among the multi-fuel generators of a similar power. If autonomy is your priority, one of the devices of a similar power output with the highest run time is the Westinghouse iGen12000TFc, reaching up to 19 hours.
  • While run time matters, it's heavily influenced by the fuel tank's capacity. Hence, it's important to consider fuel efficiency alongside. With a fuel usage of about 0.45 GPH at a 25% load, this inverter generator falls within the typical gasoline consumption range observed in comparably powerful products. If you wish to acquire one of the most gasoline efficient products of this power range, the DuroMax XP11000iHT, with a fuel consumption of 0.39 GPH could be in your good books.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 8500-9500W multi-fuel generators, the Cummins Onan P11000iTF is on the expensive side of the price range.

While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.

About Cummins

Cummins is a NYSE publicly traded, Fortune 500 corporation dealing in the power sector and heavy industry. Founded in 1919 in Columbus, IN, by William Glanton Irwin and Clessie Cummings, Cummins focused on the development of diesel engines. However, the company truly came to bloom only after the WWII, with the nationwide road expansion and went finally global in the 1960s, with its heavy-duty trucks. Cummins has, over the years, offered a wide variety of power solutions, from actual power plants to RV generators. Yet, the company has only recently dipped its foot into the portable generator market. The company currently offers a small selection of both conventional and inverter generators under the Onan product line, formerly the Cummins Onan brand.
