Description
Zoom on the Cummins Onan P11000iTF
In a few words, the Cummins Onan P11000iTF is a powerful portable inverter generator perfectly suited for:
- Homeowners who wish to power almost all appliances in their house under any circumstances
- Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials
- Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure
- RV travellers wishing to enhance their freedom and nomad lifestyle
In the forthcoming sections, you'll delve into its power characteristics, the various outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the additional features it boasts.
Power & Run Time
The Cummins Onan P11000iTF delivers 120/240V and benefits from a tri-fuel technology that allows it to run on gasoline, propane, or natural gas. When gasoline-powered, it enjoys a running wattage of 9,000W and a peak wattage of 11,000W. When propane-powered, it benefits from 8,100 rated watts and 10,000 peak watts. Its natural gas operation offers 7,200W of rated wattage and 8,200W of starting wattage. Furthermore, its parallel capability (parallel kit not included) allows power output to increase when connected to another similar or compatible unit, ensuring expanded energy capacity and reliability for various applications.
At a noise rating of 64 dBA (just slightly more noisy than an office), this inverter generator can be started via a traditional recoil pull-start mechanism, or a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). In addition, the Onan P11000iTF also supports remote starting, enhancing user convenience (key fob included).
The running time of the Onan P11000iTF, with its 7.4 gallons fuel capacity, can reach up to 16.5 hours on a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.45 GPH). With propane, it can reach up to 6.7 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.7 GPH).
The Onan P11000iTF generates a clean sine wave: providing <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), delicate electronics can be plugged in its AC outlets safely.
Outlets
The control panel includes the following 4 AC outlets:
It also sports 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (USB-A) with which charging of electronics like mobile phones and tablets is made convenient.
Thanks to its TT-30R receptacle (TT stands for 'Travel Trailer'), this Cummins generator is RV Ready, making it ideal for powering recreational vehicles.
Cummins' Smart Switch Outlet

The Onan P11000iTF has an identical outlet, but with a different name
The Onan P11000iTF features a special outlet that allows an automatic power transfer in case of a power outage.
To benefit from this feature, you'll need Cummins' Automatic Transfer Switch, which is not included with the generator.
It is also possible to use the Westinghouse ST Switch (opens in a new tab) instead, which serves the exact same purpose.
Simply put, the ST Switch is a cost-effective and versatile portable automatic transfer switch, which can be installed quickly and easily, without the assistance of an electrician.
Plug the ST Switch into one of your household 120V outlets, plug your appliances to the ST Switch, and connect the Onan P11000iTF to the ST Switch via the special outlet and a 120V cord. The generator will automatically turn on when the power goes out, and automatically turn off when the power returns.
Portability
The Cummins Onan P11000iTF is distinguished by its enclosed inverter generator design (L30.3 x W25 x H27 in), providing improved aesthetics and quieter performance compared to traditional, open frame units. This type of design is the most modern and convenient way to recreationally generate power.
Even at 219 lbs, the generator is categorized as 'portable,' suggesting its movability, although its weight may impede its portability. Nonetheless, the limited maneuverability is compensated for by utilizing its set of 2 wheels (⌀8") and its folding handle, which facilitates shifting once the generator is set on the ground.
Features
The control panel of the Onan P11000iTF includes a digital data center, which assists you in monitoring its status and activity, as it provides information on the lifetime run hours, power output, fuel level, voltage and frequency.
In addition to this info, the light indicators show you if the generator is ready, the generator is on overload and the oil level is too low.
From a security standpoint, the product offers an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, allowing you to use it with a peace of mind.
It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.
Apart from the standard documentation and an owner's manual to facilitate setup, the Cummins Onan P11000iTF features extra accessories: oil, battery charger, tool kit, funnel, propane hose and key fob.
The Cummins Onan P11000iTF versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Cummins Onan P11000iTF compare to multi-fuel generators of similar power (between 8500 and 9500 W).
- With a dry weight of 219 lbs, the Cummins Onan P11000iTF falls within the expected weight range for multi-fuel generators in the 8500 to 9500 rated wattage. Regarding dry weight, one of the champions in the same power range is the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc, with a dry weight of only 187.4 lbs.
- With noise levels starting from 64 dBA rating, this inverter generator stands out as one of the quieter options among products of similar type and power. If you value reduced noise levels, the DuroMax XP11000iH could be worth considering. It's one of the quietest generators in its power range, rated at 61 dBA.
- The Onan P11000iTF, offering a run time of up to 16.5 hours with a full tank at a 25% load, falls within the average autonomy range when compared to its peers. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the Westinghouse iGen11000TFc, with up to 19 hours.
- Run time is a key metric, but it's dependent on the generator's fuel tank capacity. Therefore, discussing fuel efficiency is necessary for a complete understanding. The inverter generator utilizes approximately 0.45 GPH of gasoline at a 25% load, placing it within the typical range of fuel consumption seen in products of comparable wattage. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.39 GPH, the DuroMax XP11000iH is a device you could look out for.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 8500-9500W multi-fuel generators, the Cummins Onan P11000iTF is on the expensive side of the price range.
While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.

About Cummins
Cummins is a NYSE publicly traded, Fortune 500 corporation dealing in the power sector and heavy industry. Founded in 1919 in Columbus, IN, by William Glanton Irwin and Clessie Cummings, Cummins focused on the development of diesel engines. However, the company truly came to bloom only after the WWII, with the nationwide road expansion and went finally global in the 1960s, with its heavy-duty trucks. Cummins has, over the years, offered a wide variety of power solutions, from actual power plants to RV generators. Yet, the company has only recently dipped its foot into the portable generator market. The company currently offers a small selection of both conventional and inverter generators under the Onan product line, formerly the Cummins Onan brand.
