Description

Zoom on the Champion 201543

In a nutshell, the Champion 201543 is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure.

In the forthcoming sections, you'll delve into its power characteristics, the various outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the additional features it boasts.

Power & Run Time

The Champion 201543 in use

The Champion 201543

Featuring a 525 cc OHV 4-stroke engine, the Champion 201543 operates using gasoline, providing 120/240V, with a running wattage of 11,000W and a starting wattage of 14,000W.

The generator is rated for a noise of 76 dBA (less noisy than a vacuum cleaner). Its starting mechanisms include a standard recoil pull-rope starting mechanism and an easy-to-use and reliable electric starter (battery included). In addition, the 201543 also supports remote starting, enhancing user convenience (key fob included).

The fuel capacity of 8.5 gallons allows the 201543 to operate for around 8.5 hours at 50% load with a full tank (fuel consumption around 1 GPH).

Considering its high Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of less than 20%, it is not recommended to rely on the 201543 for powering sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel includes the following 6 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

Due to the featured twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the 201543 is transfer switch ready: you may connect it to a breaker box to power your household during a power outage. The unit also features a StarLINK port, which allows other devices, such as your home’s Energy Storage System (ESS) or Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) to communicate with the generator to start and stop the engine when it is needed.

Portability

Measuring L29.2 x W28.6 x H26.5 in, the Champion 201543 showcases a classic open frame layout, offering stability and simple maintenance access to components, while facilitating air circulation. The generator is designed for outdoor use and demanding environments.

Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 238 lbs make may make it challenging to manually lift and transport. Nevertheless, thanks to its wheel kit (⌀9.5") and its folding handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.

Features

The 201543's control panel

The 201543's control center features an Intelligauge meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours to aid you with the monitoring of its status and activity.

The fuel level of the generator can be determined quickly, easily, and conveniently with the help of its built-in fuel gauge.

From a security standpoint, the product offers an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, allowing you to use it with a peace of mind.

The unit also benefits from the CO Shield™ technology, which monitors accumulation of poisonous carbon monoxide (CO) gas produced by the engine's exhaust when the generator is running. If CO Shield™ detects elevated levels of CO gas, it automatically shuts off the engine and illuminates a red LED.

Apart from the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to facilitate setup, the Champion 201543 features extra accessories: funnel, oil and key fob.

The Champion 201543 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Champion 201543 compare to generators of similar power (between 10000 and 14000 W).

  • When it comes to weight, the Champion 201543 tips the scales at just 238 pounds, making it one of the lighter generators in the 10000 to 14000 rated wattage range. If weight is an important consideration for you, the Genmax GM12000XiT stands out as one of the top contenders in this power category, with a dry weight of 194 pounds.
  • The generator can be considered average in its noise for its power category, as it is rated at 76 dBA. If you'd like a less noisy alternative, the Genmax GM12500iET is a strong contender. It boasts a noise rating of 62 dBA, placing it among the quietest generators in its power category.
  • The 201543's autonomy is somewhat low end compared to devices of its power range, as it reaches only around 8.5 hours at 50% load on a full tank. If prolonged run time is essential to your needs, you could consider the WEN TF1450X, which offers one of the highest autonomy among devices with similar power output, lasting around 12 hours.
  • Run times are important, yet thanks to their dependence on the fuel capacity, they should be judged along with the fuel consumption of the device. As this generator uses an estimated 1 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load, it finds itself in the average gasoline consumption range of similar products. If fuel consumption is your top priority, we suggest to check out the WEN TF1450X, which has a fuel consumption of only 0.68 GPH and thus, is one of the most efficient devices in our database.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 10000-14000W generators, the Champion 201543 is on the cheap side of the price range.

It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
