Description

Zoom on the Champion 201438

In short, the Champion 201438 is a powerful portable generator adequately designed for:

  • Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure
  • Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout

The subsequent sections will explore in detail its power characteristics, the diverse outlets it provides, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it offers.

Power & Run Time

The Champion 201438 in use

The Champion 201438

The Champion 201438 delivers 120/240V and features a tri-fuel technology, granting it the capability to utilize gasoline, propane, or natural gas. When utilizing gasoline, it achieves a running wattage of 10,000W and a peak wattage of 12,500W. Upon switching to propane, it benefits from 9,000 rated watts and 11,250 peak watts. Transitioning to natural gas operation provides 8,000W of rated wattage and 10,000W of starting wattage.

With a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a shower), the generator features a standard recoil pull-rope starting mechanism, but also a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included).

As for its running time, the 201438, along with its 7.7 gallons fuel capacity, can run for around 8 hours at 50% load with a full tank filled with gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.96 GPH). If propane is used, it can operate for around 3 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.57 GPH).

As the 201438 exhibits a THD of less than 20%, which is high, it is best avoided for powering sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel features 6 AC outlets as follows:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

Because the 201438 is equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: it can power your home during a power outage, as it can be easily connected to your breaker box to power your household.

Portability

At L29 x W28.5 x H25.8 in, the traditional open frame structure of the Champion 201438 ensures stability while facilitating convenient maintenance access to components and promoting air cooling. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.

With a weight of 231 lbs, the generator is still labeled as 'portable,' denoting its ability to be moved, although its heaviness might restrict easy portability. Still, once it is on the ground, its wheel kit (⌀9.5") and its folding handle can easily solve the issue of low mobility and allow for easy relocation of the device.

Features

The 201438's control panel

The 201438's status and activity may be monitored conveniently via the control panel, as it features an Intelligauge meter, providing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours data.

Equipped with a built-in fuel gauge, the generator facilitates swift gas level checks.

From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), giving you a peace of mind during use.

The unit also benefits from the CO Shield™ technology, which monitors accumulation of poisonous carbon monoxide (CO) gas produced by the engine's exhaust when the generator is running. If CO Shield™ detects elevated levels of CO gas, it automatically shuts off the engine and illuminates a red LED.

Beyond the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to assist with setup, the Champion 201438 ships with supplementary accessories: propane hose, natural gas hose with NPT adapter, funnel and oil.

The Champion 201438 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Champion 201438 compare to multi-fuel generators of similar power (between 9500 and 10500 W).

  • Weighing 231 lbs, the Champion 201438 is one of the heavier multi-fuel generators within the 9500-10500 rated wattage bracket. If you are mindful of weight, the Genmax GM12000XiT is among the top contenders in this power range, with a dry weight of 194 pounds.
  • The generator's noise output, rated at 74 dBA, falls within the average range expected for devices in its type and power range. If noise emissions are important to you, one of the least noisy generators of this power range is the Genmax GM12500iET with only 62 dBA.
  • In terms of its autonomy, the 201438 can operate for around 8 hours at a 50% load, placing it within the lower bracket among generators of similar type and power range. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the Pulsar G12KBN, with around 12 hours.
  • Though run time is a significant parameter, it's closely tied to the generator's fuel tank size. To get a comprehensive understanding, fuel efficiency must also be taken into account. When it comes to fuel efficiency among generators with similar wattage, this generator lags behind, with a consumption rate of 0.96 GPH at a 50% load. If you're placing a high priority on fuel consumption, the Westinghouse WGen9500DFc EFI, with a low fuel consumption rate of 0.66 GPH, could be an option to consider.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 9500-10500W multi-fuel generators, the Champion 201438 is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

Is this generator compatible with the 30amp surge protected generlink, and if not due to the neutral begin bonded to the frame, is is possible to install a floating neutral lug to this generator? (Asked February 08, 2026)

Generlink compatibility should be asked directly to Generlink. To convert the neutral, you may want to refer to our article on neutral conversion, or to Champion Power Equipment's article (opens in a new tab).
