In the forthcoming sections, you'll delve into its power characteristics, the various outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the additional features it boasts.

Power & Run Time

The Champion 201431 in use

The Champion 201431

The Champion 201431 houses a 459 cc OHV 4-stroke engine, which provides 120/240V, consumes gasoline and delivers a running wattage of 9,200W along with a peak wattage of 11,500W.

At a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a shower), this generator provides the choice between a standard recoil pull-rope starting mechanism or an easy-to-use and reliable electric starter (battery included) for starting.

The Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) system enhances the engine's reliability, lowers fuel consumption, improves startup, reduces servicing, boosts stale fuel resistance, and offers better altitude adaptability.

Featuring a 7.7 gallons fuel tank, the 201431 can provide power for around 11.5 hours at 50% load on a full tank (with fuel consumption averaging 0.67 gallons per hour).

Since the 201431 has a high THD (<20%), it is advisable to not use it for the powering of sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel includes the following 6 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

If your RV requires a 50-amp service, consider this Champion unit RV-ready, as it includes a 14-50R outlet. In addition, as it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the 201431 is transfer switch ready: in case of a power outage, you will be easily able to connect it to a breaker box and power your household.

Portability

Measuring L28 x W25.9 x H26.9 in, the classic open frame construction of the Champion 201431 provides stability while enabling convenient maintenance access to components and adequate air cooling. This type of design is ideal for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.

While technically classified as 'portable' due to its ability to be moved, the 209 lbs of this generator may make manual lifting and transportation somewhat difficult. Nevertheless, thanks to its wheel kit (⌀9.5") and its folding handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.

Features

The 201431's control panel

With a digital Intelligauge data center integrated into its control panel, the 201431 provides real-time insights into the frequency, lifetime run hours, power output and voltage, enabling easy monitoring of its status and activity.

Regarding security, the generator comes with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), providing peace of mind during operation. Champion's built-in surge protector (Volt Guard™) safeguards your equipment and appliances against voltage spikes.

The unit also benefits from the CO Shield™ technology, which monitors accumulation of poisonous carbon monoxide (CO) gas produced by the engine's exhaust when the generator is running. If CO Shield™ detects elevated levels of CO gas, it automatically shuts off the engine and illuminates a red LED.

With the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), letting you start the generator quickly, the Champion 201431 also comes with several accessories, including: battery charger, funnel and oil. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

The Champion 201431 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Champion 201431 compare to generators of similar power (between 8500 and 9500 W).

  • Regarding weight, the Champion 201431 comes in at only 209 pounds, positioning itself as one of the lighter options among generators spanning from 8500 to 9500 in rated wattage. if you wish to prioritize weight, the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc is one of the top contenders in its power category, weighing only 187.4 pounds.
  • This generator has a somewhat average expected noise for its power range, rated at 74 dBA. If noise is a concern for you, you could consider the DuroMax XP11000iH, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, rated at 61 dBA.
  • The 201431 provides a higher run time than similarly powerful devices, reaching around 11.5 hours at 50% load. If you wish to prioritize autonomy, the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc shines as one of the top contenders, offering one of the highest run times among generators with similar power output, totaling around 12 hours.
  • The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. This generator can be considered as fuel-efficient, due to its low estimated fuel consumption of only 0.67 GPH (gallon per hour) at 50% load, within the aforementioned wattage range. If you wish to get a unit of similar power, but with one of the best fuel efficiency, you could consider the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc, which has an impressively low fuel consumption of 0.66 GPH.
