Zoom on the Champion 201423

In short, the Champion 201423 is a powerful portable inverter generator adequately designed for:

  • Small homeowners in search of a full power backup solution
  • Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
  • Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working
  • RV travellers looking for even more independence

In the forthcoming sections, you'll delve into its power characteristics, the various outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the additional features it boasts.

Power & Run Time

The Champion 201423 in use

The Champion 201423

The Champion 201423 delivers 120/240V and boasts with a tri-fuel technology enabling it to utilize gasoline, propane, or natural gas. When powered by gasoline, it achieves a running wattage of 9,000W and a peak wattage of 11,000W. Upon using propane, it gains 8,100 rated watts and 11,000 peak watts. Its operation with natural gas provides 7,290W of rated wattage and 11,000W of starting wattage.

Featuring a noise rating of 64 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a normal conversation), the inverter generator is equipped with both a traditional recoil pull-start mechanism and a no-fuss and convenient electric starter (battery included) for starting. The 201423 can also be remotely started, offering further convenience (key fob included).

Regarding its running time, the 201423, with a 6.08 gallons fuel capacity, can operate for up to 15 hours with a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.41 GPH). When using propane, it can run for up to 8 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.59 GPH).

The 201423 generates a clean sine wave with <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), ensuring minimal electrical noise and fluctuations. This feature makes it ideal for powering sensitive electronics, providing stable and reliable AC power through the outlets.

Outlets

The control panel features 6 AC outlets as follows:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

Furthermore, it showcases 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A (cigarette lighter style) receptacle with which you may charge your batteries with ease.

If you own an RV with a 50-amp service, you can consider this Champion unit as RV-ready, as it features a 14-50R outlet. In addition, as it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the 201423 is transfer switch ready: in case of a power outage, you will be easily able to connect it to a breaker box and power your household.

Portability

As an inverter generator, the Champion 201423 showcases a closed design (L28.3 x W28.8 x H27.5 in), enhancing aesthetics and ensuring quieter operation compared to conventional, open frame models. The featured design follows the latest trends and is ideal for easy and recreational use.

As the generator's weight is 212.3 pounds, manually moving it or transporting it may be challenging, despite the fact that it is technically considered 'portable' (movable). Nevertheless, thanks to its set of 2 wheels (⌀8") and its folding handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.

Features

The 201423's control panel

Included in the control panel of the 201423, a digital Intelligauge data center assists in tracking its status and activity by providing details on the power output, voltage, frequency and lifetime run hours.

In addition to this info, the device’s light indicator will display if its oil levels are insufficient.

A built-in fuel gauge allows for a quick, easy and convenient check of the fuel level of the inverter generator.

From a security standpoint, the generator is furnished with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, ensuring peace of mind during operation.

The unit also benefits from the CO Shield™ technology, which monitors accumulation of poisonous carbon monoxide (CO) gas produced by the engine's exhaust when the generator is running. If CO Shield™ detects elevated levels of CO gas, it automatically shuts off the engine and illuminates a red LED.

Apart from the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to facilitate setup, the Champion 201423 features extra accessories: natural gas hose with NPT adapter, key fob, propane hose, tool kit, oil and funnel.

The Champion 201423 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Champion 201423 compare to multi-fuel generators of similar power (between 8500 and 9500 W).

  • At 212.3 lbs in dry weight, the Champion 201423 fits well within the typical weight bracket for multi-fuel generators producing 8500 to 9500 rated watts. if you wish to prioritize weight, the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc is one of the top contenders in its power category, weighing only 187.4 pounds.
  • Delivering a rated noise output as low as 64 dBA, this inverter generator is has a quieter operation that most units of similar type and power. If you value reduced noise levels, the DuroMax XP11000iH could be worth considering. It's one of the quietest generators in its power range, rated at 61 dBA.
  • The 201423's autonomy is somewhat low end compared to devices of its type and power range, as it reaches only up to 15 hours at 25% load on a full tank. Concerning the run times, one of the several devices with a comparable output, offering the highest autonomy, is the Westinghouse iGen11000TFc, which is able to run for up to 19 hours.
  • Autonomy holds its importance, however, it is largely dependent on the generator’s fuel capacity and so, it is nonsensible to discuss it without mentioning fuel efficiency as well. With an estimated gasoline consumption of 0.41 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load, this inverter generator is among the more fuel-efficient of the products in the above-mentioned wattage range. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.39 GPH, the DuroMax XP11000iH is a device you could look out for.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 8500-9500W multi-fuel generators, the Champion 201423 is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
