Description

Zoom on the Champion 201408

In short, the Champion 201408 is a compact portable inverter generator adequately designed for:

  • RV travellers wishing to enhance their freedom and nomad lifestyle
  • Occasional participants of outdoor events, competitions, concerts and festivals
  • Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials

In the forthcoming sections, you'll delve into its power characteristics, the various outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the additional features it boasts.

Power & Run Time

The Champion 201408 in use

The Champion 201408

Featuring dual-fuel technology, the Champion 201408 provides 120V, as well as versatility and power. Running on gasoline, it delivers a running wattage of 4,000W and a peak wattage of 5,500W. Alternatively, when fueled by propane, it offers 3,600 running watts and 5,500 peak watts. Furthermore, the parallel capability (ParaLink (opens in a new tab) not included) offers the advantage of increasing power output when connected to another similar or compatible unit, delivering expanded energy capacity and flexibility for various applications.

Featuring a noise rating of 61 dBA (just slightly more noisy than background music), the inverter generator is equipped with both a manual recoil starter system and a user-friendly and efficient electric starter (battery included) for starting. For added user convenience, the 201408 is equipped with remote starting capabilities (key fob included).

The 201408, with a fuel capacity of 2.25 gallons, reaches a run time of up to 11 hours utilizing gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.2 GPH). Alternatively, it can reach a run time of up to 21 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.22 GPH) with propane.

The 201408 ensures a clean sine wave output, boasting <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) to protect your sensitive electronics when connected to its AC outlets.

Outlets

The control panel provides the upcoming 3 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (TT-30R) receptacle

Furthermore, it showcases 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A (cigarette lighter style) receptacle with which you may charge your batteries with ease.

With its TT-30R receptacle (TT standing for 'Travel Trailer'), this Champion generator is RV Ready, perfectly suited for powering recreational vehicles.

Portability

With its enclosed inverter generator design (L23.5 x W18 x H20.1 in), the Champion 201408 offers superior aesthetics and operates with minimized noise levels, distinguishing itself from standard, open frame generators. The design follows the contemporary trends and is perfect for recreationally generating power.

Despite its weight of 104 lbs, the generator is still considered 'portable,' meaning it is movable, although its heftiness may restrict portability in certain environments or require additional considerations for transportation and setup. Still, once it is on the ground, its set of 2 wheels (⌀5") and its folding handle can easily solve the issue of low mobility and allow for easy relocation of the device.

Features

The 201408's control panel

Designed with a digital Intelligauge data center, the control panel of the 201408 grants you access to crucial data on the frequency, power output, voltage and lifetime run hours, ensuring practical monitoring of its status and activity.

In addition to this info, a light indicator shows you if the oil level is too low.

Thanks to its built-in fuel gauge, the inverter generator allows you to quickly, conveniently, and easily check the gas level at a glance.

Regarding security, the generator comes with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), providing peace of mind during operation.

The unit also benefits from the CO Shield™ technology, which monitors accumulation of poisonous carbon monoxide (CO) gas produced by the engine's exhaust when the generator is running. If CO Shield™ detects elevated levels of CO gas, it automatically shuts off the engine and illuminates a red LED.

Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the Champion 201408 also is packed along with the following accessories: oil, propane hose, funnel, key fob and tool kit. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

The Champion 201408 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Champion 201408 compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 3500 and 4500 W).

  • With a dry weight of 104 lbs, the Champion 201408 falls within the expected weight range for inverter generators in the 3500 to 4500 rated wattage. If weight is a key factor for your needs, the WEN 56432iX is noteworthy for being one of the top contenders in this power range, with a dry weight of 52.9 pounds.
  • Since the inverter generator's noise is rated at 61 dBA, it has the roughly average expected noise for a device of similar type and power. If noise level is one your key decisive factors, you may find the Westinghouse iGen5000DF appealing. It's rated at 52 dBA, making it one of the quietest generators in its power range.
  • Regarding its autonomy, the autonomy of the 201408, reaching up to 11 hours at a 25% load, can be considered as low end, compared to other inverters of a roughly equal output. If you wish to prioritize autonomy, the Firman WH03662OF shines as one of the top contenders, offering one of the highest run times among generators with similar power output, totaling up to 25 hours.
  • While run time matters, it's heavily influenced by the fuel tank's capacity. Hence, it's important to consider fuel efficiency alongside. Standing at an estimated 0.2 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 25% load, this inverter generator is somewhat average in this area compared to other devices, within the aforementioned wattage range. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the Champion 201319, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.16 GPH, may be the right generator for you.
According to our stats, the following comparison is pretty popular: Champion 201408 vs Predator 5000.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 3500-4500W dual fuel inverter generators, the Champion 201408 is on the average side of the price range.

I received this generator, the first one had issues. Champion stood behind their product and shipped me a new one. Hooked up the battery, filled the oil and ran iton propane.
Fired right off, super quite and more than enough for my home. Ref, furnace, freezer, lights, etc. Used barely over 1/3 power rating.
This should be a welcome item, when needed.
