Zoom on the Champion 201408
In summary, the Champion 201408 is a compact portable inverter generator especially useful for:
- RV travellers looking for even more independence
- People occasionally participating in outdoor fairs, festivals or events
- Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed.
Power & Run Time
With its dual-fuel technology, the Champion 201408 delivers 120V, and offers power and flexibility. Running on gasoline, it boasts a running wattage of 4,000W and a peak wattage of 5,500W. When powered by propane, it delivers 3,600 running watts and 5,500 peak watts. Moreover, since it is parallel capable (ParaLink (opens in a new tab) not included), its power may be increased if linked to a second compatible unit.
Enjoying a noise rating of 61 dBA (just slightly more noisy than background music), this inverter generator offers the versatility of starting with either a conventional pull-start mechanism or a user-friendly and efficient electric starter (battery included). Moreover, the 201408 boasts remote starting functionality, adding another layer of convenience (key fob included).
The running time of the 201408, with its 2.25 gallons fuel capacity, can reach up to 11 hours on a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.2 GPH). With propane, it can reach up to 21 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.22 GPH).
The 201408 generates a clean sine wave: providing <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), delicate electronics can be plugged in its AC outlets safely.
Outlets
The control panel is equipped with the following 3 AC outlets:
It also sports 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A (cigarette lighter style) receptacle allowing you to easily charge your batteries.
This Champion generator is RV Ready, as it features a TT-30R receptacle (TT stands for 'Travel Trailer').
Portability
The Champion 201408 is an inverter generator and features an encased design with the following dimensions: L23.5 x W18 x H20.1 in. This design enhances aesthetics and helps minimize noise levels, distinguishing it from conventional, open frame products. The featured design follows the latest trends and is ideal for easy and recreational use.
The 201408 can be taken anywhere with you, thanks to its weight of 104 lbs. In addition, with its set of 2 wheels (⌀5") and its folding handle, it may be shifted with ease, once placed on the floor.
Features
Designed with a digital Intelligauge data center, the control panel of the 201408 grants you access to crucial data on the lifetime run hours, power output, voltage and frequency, ensuring practical monitoring of its status and activity.
In addition to this info, the device's light indicator will illuminate to indicate if the oil level is too low.
The inverter generator includes a built-in fuel gauge, a quick, easy and convenient method of checking the device’s gas level.
In terms of security, the generator features an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, ensuring peace of mind during its use.
The unit also benefits from the CO Shield™ technology, which monitors accumulation of poisonous carbon monoxide (CO) gas produced by the engine's exhaust when the generator is running. If CO Shield™ detects elevated levels of CO gas, it automatically shuts off the engine and illuminates a red LED.
Apart from the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to facilitate setup, the Champion 201408 features extra accessories: tool kit, oil, funnel, key fob and propane hose. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

The Champion 201408 versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Champion 201408 compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 3500 and 4500 W).
- At 104 lbs in dry weight, the Champion 201408 fits well within the typical weight bracket for inverter generators producing 3500 to 4500 rated watts. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the WEN 56432iX, with a dry weight of just 52.9 pounds.
- The inverter generator can be considered average in its noise for its type and power category, as it is rated at 61 dBA. If you value reduced noise levels, the Westinghouse iGen5000DF could be worth considering. It's one of the quietest generators in its power range, rated at 52 dBA.
- Regarding its autonomy, the autonomy of the 201408, reaching up to 11 hours at a 25% load, can be considered as low end, compared to other inverters of a roughly equal output. Furthermore, considering the run times, one of the generators which have a roughly same power output, with the highest autonomy, is the Champion 200977, as it provides up to 22 hours.
- While run time is vital, it hinges on the fuel capacity. To grasp the full picture, we must also factor in fuel efficiency. This inverter generator has an average fuel consumption among comparably powerful devices, as it reaches 0.2 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 25% load. If you're placing a high priority on fuel consumption, the Champion 201319, with a low fuel consumption rate of 0.16 GPH, could be an option to consider.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 3500-4500W dual fuel inverter generators, the Champion 201408 is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

User Reviews
I received this generator, the first one had issues. Champion stood behind their product and shipped me a new one. Hooked up the battery, filled the oil and ran iton propane.
Fired right off, super quite and more than enough for my home. Ref, furnace, freezer, lights, etc. Used barely over 1/3 power rating.
This should be a welcome item, when needed.
