Description

Zoom on the Champion 201393

In a nutshell, the Champion 201393 is a portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • RV travellers looking for even more independence
  • People occasionally participating in sporting competitions, open-air performances and outdoor festivals
  • Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout

In the forthcoming sections, you'll delve into its power characteristics, the various outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the additional features it boasts.

Power & Run Time

The Champion 201393 in use

The Champion 201393

With its dual-fuel technology, the Champion 201393 delivers 120V, and offers power and flexibility. Running on gasoline, it boasts a running wattage of 3,800W and a peak wattage of 4,750W. When powered by propane, it delivers 3,420 running watts and 4,275 peak watts.

The generator, rated for a noise of 68 dBA (less noisy than a normal conversation), provides flexibility in starting, offering both a classic hand-operated recoil starting mechanism and a practical and straightforward electric starter (battery included).

In terms of running time, the 201393, equipped with a 4.7 gallons fuel tank, is capable of running continuously for around 14 hours at 50% load on a full gasoline tank (with fuel consumption estimated at around 0.34 gallons per hour). When utilizing propane, it provides around 10.5 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.45 GPH) of operation.

Given the 201393's high Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of less than 20%, it is advisable to avoid using it to power sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel includes the following 4 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120V 30A (TT-30R) receptacle

This Champion generator is RV Ready, as it features a TT-30R receptacle (TT stands for 'Travel Trailer').

Portability

Measuring L24.7 x W25 x H22.2 in, the classic open frame build of the Champion 201393 delivers stability and easy maintenance access to components, facilitating air circulation. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.

While the generator is considered to be technically 'portable' (in the sense that you can move it), manually lifting and transporting it may be challenging, due to its high weight of 133 lbs. Nevertheless, the restricted maneuverability is counteracted by its wheel kit (⌀8") and its folding handle, enabling easy shifting once the generator is set in place.

Features

The 201393's control panel

The 201393 and its control panel include an Intelligauge meter showing you voltage, frequency and lifetime hours. This feature comes handy when monitoring its status and activity.

The built-in fuel gauge of the generator ensures simple and quick gas level assessments.

Regarding security, the generator comes with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), providing peace of mind during operation. Champion's built-in surge protector (Volt Guard™) safeguards your equipment and appliances against voltage spikes.

The unit also benefits from the CO Shield™ technology, which monitors accumulation of poisonous carbon monoxide (CO) gas produced by the engine's exhaust when the generator is running. If CO Shield™ detects elevated levels of CO gas, it automatically shuts off the engine and illuminates a red LED.

While the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), helpful for starting the device promptly, come with the Champion 201393, the following accessories are also included: oil, funnel and propane hose. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

The Champion 201393 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Champion 201393 compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 3500 and 4500 W).

  • A weight of 133 lbs makes the Champion 201393 one of the heaviest dual fuel devices in the 3500-4500 rated wattage range. Regarding dry weight, one of the champions in the same power range is the Pulsar PGX5250BiXCO, with a dry weight of only 64 lbs.
  • With noise emissions rated as low as 68 dBA, this generator falls within the typical noise range expected for devices of similar type and power. If you'd like a less noisy alternative, the Westinghouse iGen5000DF is a strong contender. It boasts a noise rating of 52 dBA, placing it among the quietest generators in its power category.
  • The 201393 provides a higher run time than similarly powerful dual fuel devices, reaching around 14 hours at 50% load. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the Westinghouse iGen5000DF, with around 15 hours.
  • Autonomy holds its importance, however, it is largely dependent on the generator’s fuel capacity and so, it is nonsensible to discuss it without mentioning fuel efficiency as well. The generator utilizes approximately 0.34 GPH of gasoline at a 50% load, placing it within the typical range of fuel consumption seen in products of comparable wattage. If you wish to further improve in the area of fuel efficiency, the Westinghouse iGen5000DF, which boasts with a gas consumption of only 0.23 GPH, may be the right generator for you.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 3500-4500W dual fuel generators, the Champion 201393 is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

It was easy to finish putting it together . I put it together from a handi cap scooter seat . I followed the instructions . When I was finnished rolled outside the garage on driveway and turned on choke it started right up just like it was suppose to. Very happy with the purchase would differently recommend the Champion generator

    + PROS:
    • I did not have any problem pulling the generator out of shipping box and installing wheels and removing shipping straps put in oil and gas and plugged in battery .It started right up . I did all this from a handicap scooter . I haven't been able to walk in 6 years . It was not that difficult it probably took me longer than most people but it was possible to do even in my condition . Very happy with the purchase. Richard Jones
    - CONS:
    • The Generator was a little heavy but I had read the specifications and was prepared . Other than that I am very happy with the purchase would recommend.
