Description
Zoom on the Champion 201393
To sum up, the Champion 201393 is a portable generator tailored for:
- RV travellers wishing to enhance their freedom and nomad lifestyle
- Occasional participants of outdoor events, competitions, concerts and festivals
- Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
Over the following sections, you'll uncover its power characteristics, the selection of outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it includes.
Power & Run Time
The dual-fuel technology of the Champion 201393 allows for an output of 120V and provides superb power and versatility. If gasoline-powered, the device provides a running wattage of 3,800W and a starting wattage of 4,750W. If propane-powered, it gives 3,420 rated watts and 4,275 starting watts.
At a noise rating of 68 dBA (less noisy than an office), this generator can be started via a traditional recoil pull-start mechanism, or an intuitive and practical electric starter (battery included).
Regarding its running time, the 201393, with a 4.7 gallons fuel capacity, can operate for around 14 hours at 50% load with a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.34 GPH). When using propane, it can run for around 10.5 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.45 GPH).
Given the 201393's high Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of less than 20%, it is advisable to avoid using it to power sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel features the following 4 AC outlets:
Thanks to its TT-30R receptacle (TT meaning 'Travel Trailer'), this Champion generator is RV Ready, ready to power your recreational vehicle with ease.
Portability
Measuring L24.7 x W25 x H22.2 in, the Champion 201393 showcases a classic open frame layout, offering stability and simple maintenance access to components, while facilitating air circulation. The generator is designed for ideal use outdoors and in rough environments.
While the generator is considered to be technically 'portable' (in the sense that you can move it), manually lifting and transporting it may be challenging, due to its high weight of 133 lbs. Despite the restricted maneuverability, its wheel kit (⌀8") and its folding handle provides a solution, allowing for convenient shifting once the generator is positioned on the ground.
Features
To help you monitor the 201393's status and activity, its control panel is equipped with an Intelligauge meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours.
Benefiting from its built-in fuel gauge, the generator allows for easy and immediate gas level inspections.
From a security standpoint, the product offers an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, allowing you to use it with a peace of mind. Champion's built-in surge protector (Volt Guard™) safeguards your equipment and appliances against voltage spikes.
The unit also benefits from the CO Shield™ technology, which monitors accumulation of poisonous carbon monoxide (CO) gas produced by the engine's exhaust when the generator is running. If CO Shield™ detects elevated levels of CO gas, it automatically shuts off the engine and illuminates a red LED.
While the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), helpful for starting the device promptly, come with the Champion 201393, the following accessories are also included: propane hose, funnel and oil. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.
The Champion 201393 versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Champion 201393 compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 3500 and 4500 W).
- Tipping the scales at 133 lbs, the Champion 201393 qualifies as one of the heaviest options among dual fuel generators rated between 3500 and 4500 watts. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Pulsar PGX5250BiXCO, standing at just 64 lbs.
- This generator has a somewhat average expected noise for its type and power range, rated at 68 dBA. If you value reduced noise levels, the Westinghouse iGen5000DF could be worth considering. It's one of the quietest generators in its power range, rated at 52 dBA.
- Thanks to an impressive running time of around 14 hours at 50% load, the 201393 benefits from a higher run time than many dual fuel generators of a similar output. Concerning the run times, one of the several devices with a comparable output, offering the highest autonomy, is the Westinghouse iGen5000DF, which is able to run for around 15 hours.
- Even though run times are undoubtedly important, they are dependent on the fuel capacity to a large extent. For a more wholesome picture, we must take into consideration the fuel consumption of the generator. The generator burns fuel at a rate of around 0.34 GPH when running at a 50% load, which is consistent with the average fuel usage of models of comparable power output. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.23 GPH, the Westinghouse iGen5000DF is a device you could look out for.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 3500-4500W dual fuel generators, the Champion 201393 is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
