Power & Run Time

The Champion 201182 in use

The Champion 201182

The Champion 201182's design includes a gasoline-fueled 439 cc OHV 4-stroke engine. With a 120/240V output, it gives a running wattage of 7,500W and also a peak wattage of 9,375W.

With a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a vacuum cleaner), the generator features a standard recoil pull-rope starting mechanism, but also a user-friendly and hassle-free electric starter (battery included). To add further convenience, the 201182 can be remotely started (key fob included).

With a full tank, the 201182 can operate for around 8 hours at 50% load (fuel consumption around 0.71 GPH), thanks to its fuel capacity of 5.7 gallons.

Considering its high Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of less than 20%, it is not recommended to rely on the 201182 for powering sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel features 6 AC outlets as follows:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

If your RV requires a 50-amp service, consider this Champion unit RV-ready, as it includes a 14-50R outlet. In addition, equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the 201182 is engineered to be transfer switch ready, enabling simple hookup to your breaker box to provide backup power for your home during blackouts.

Portability

Measuring L28.5 x W26.1 x H25.2 in, the classic open frame construction of the Champion 201182 provides stability while enabling convenient maintenance access to components and adequate air cooling. The device has been designed for tough environments and demanding outdoor use.

Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 198.4 pounds. However, the lack of maneuverability can be offset with its wheel kit (⌀9.5") and its folding handle, which allows for convenient shifting once the generator is placed on the ground.

The 201182's control panel

Integrated into the control center of the 201182 are an Intelligauge meter, providing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours data, facilitating the monitoring of its status and activity.

Thanks to its built-in fuel gauge, the generator allows you to quickly, conveniently, and easily check the gas level at a glance.

As far as security is concerned, the generator comes with an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, providing peace of mind during use. Champion's built-in surge protector (Volt Guard™) safeguards your equipment and appliances against voltage spikes.

The unit also benefits from the CO Shield™ technology, which monitors accumulation of poisonous carbon monoxide (CO) gas produced by the engine's exhaust when the generator is running. If CO Shield™ detects elevated levels of CO gas, it automatically shuts off the engine and illuminates a red LED.

Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the Champion 201182 also is packed along with the following accessories: funnel, oil and key fob.

The Champion 201182 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Champion 201182 compare to generators of similar power (between 7000 and 8000 W).

  • As its weight is 198.4 pounds, the Champion 201182 falls in the expected weight range of the devices in the 7000-8000 rated wattage category. If weight is an important consideration for you, the Genmax GM10500XiT stands out as one of the top contenders in this power category, with a dry weight of 123.5 pounds.
  • This generator has a somewhat average expected noise for its power range, rated at 74 dBA. If noise is a concern for you, you could consider the Champion 201175, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, rated at 61 dBA.
  • As for its autonomy, the 201182, with an autonomy of around 8 hours at a 50% load, is placed on the low end among the generators of its kind. For those prioritizing autonomy, the Predator 9000 could be considered, as it offers one of the longest run times among generators with similar power output, reaching around 13 hours.
  • Run time is a key metric, but it's dependent on the generator's fuel capacity. Therefore, discussing fuel efficiency is necessary to get the full picture. As this generator uses an estimated 0.71 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load, it finds itself in the average gasoline consumption range of similar products. If you wish to acquire one of the most gasoline efficient products of this power range, the Cummins Onan P9500df, with a fuel consumption of 0.6 GPH could be in your good books.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 7000-8000W generators, the Champion 201182 is on the cheap side of the price range.

It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
