Description
Zoom on the Champion 201176
In a nutshell, the Champion 201176 is a powerful portable inverter generator mostly geared towards:
- Food truck owners who want to ensure that their business is fully self-contained and does not rely on potentially unreliable external power
- Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
- Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working
- RV travellers looking for even more independence
The subsequent sections will explore in detail its power characteristics, the diverse outlets it provides, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it offers.
Power & Run Time
The Champion 201176 delivers 120/240V and features a tri-fuel technology, granting it the capability to utilize gasoline, propane, or natural gas. When utilizing gasoline, it achieves a running wattage of 7,250W and a peak wattage of 9,000W. Upon switching to propane, it benefits from 6,525 rated watts and 9,000 peak watts. Transitioning to natural gas operation provides 5,875W of rated wattage and 9,000W of starting wattage.
At a noise rating of 72 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a dishwasher), this inverter generator provides the choice between a standard recoil pull-rope starting mechanism or a user-friendly and efficient electric starter (battery included) for starting.
Regarding its running time, the 201176, with a 4.3 gallons fuel capacity, can operate for up to 14 hours with a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.31 GPH). When using propane, it can run for up to 12 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.39 GPH).
With a <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), the 201176 delivers a clean sine wave—essential for safeguarding your delicate electronics when plugged into its AC outlets.
Outlets
The control panel is equipped with the following 6 AC outlets:
Moreover, it comes equipped with 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A (cigarette lighter style) receptacle enabling simple battery charging for added ease. With the unit, you will also find a dual port USB adapter, allowing for the convenient charging of electronics like mobile phones and tablets using the DC receptacle.
For RV owners with a 50-amp service, this Champion unit is RV-ready, boasting a 14-50R outlet. In addition, as it features a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the 201176 is transfer switch ready: in case of a power outage, you will be easily able to connect it to a breaker box and power your household.
Portability
With a size of L26.6 x W25.5 x H25.4 in, the Champion 201176 features an open frame design, providing stability and simplified maintenance access to components, enhancing air circulation. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.
Since the generator weighs 156.6 lbs, it could be potentially be difficult to manually lift it and transport it, even though it is technically considered to 'be portable' (in the sense that it is movable). However, the limited maneuverability is remedied with its set of wheels (⌀8") and its folding handle, facilitating convenient shifting once the generator is positioned on the ground.
Features
To help you monitor the 201176's status and activity, its control panel is equipped with a digital Intelligauge data center, giving you information on the lifetime run hours, power output, voltage and frequency.
In addition to this info, a light indicator allows you to instantly see if the oil level is too low.
Thanks to its built-in fuel gauge, the inverter generator allows you to quickly, conveniently, and easily check the gas level at a glance.
From a security point of view, the generator is equipped with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), giving you a peace of mind during use.
The unit also benefits from the CO Shield™ technology, which monitors accumulation of poisonous carbon monoxide (CO) gas produced by the engine's exhaust when the generator is running. If CO Shield™ detects elevated levels of CO gas, it automatically shuts off the engine and illuminates a red LED.
Along the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), useful for starting the generator right away, the Champion 201176's package also includes these accessories: dual port USB adapter, oil, natural gas hose with NPT adapter, propane hose and funnel. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

The Champion 201176 versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Champion 201176 compare to generators of similar power (between 6500 and 7500 W).
- Concerning weight, the Champion 201176 weighs only just 156.6 pounds, distinguishing itself as one of the lighter generators amidst the 6500 to 7500 rated wattage range. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the Sportsman GEN85KIDF, with a dry weight of just 133 pounds.
- With noise emissions reaching as low as 72 dBA, this inverter generator has a noise level typical for devices of its power category. If you are concerned with noise, check out the Westinghouse iGen8200TFc, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, with a noise rating of just 60 dBA.
- As far as autonomy is concerned, providing up to 14 hours of runtime with a full tank at a 25% load, the 201176 falls into the low end in comparison with other devices of a comparable power output. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the DuroMax XP9500iHT, with up to 21 hours.
- Though run time is a significant parameter, it's closely tied to the generator's fuel tank size. To get a comprehensive understanding, fuel efficiency must also be taken into account. Among devices of similar power, this inverter generator has one of the better fuel efficiency, with consumption rates of around 0.31 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load. To prioritize fuel savings, we advise considering the Westinghouse iGen8200TFc, which stands out for its gasoline efficiency, consuming just 0.23 gallons per hour.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 6500-7500W multi-fuel generators, the Champion 201176 is on the average side of the price range.
Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

What is Nat Gas consumption of this generator at max (or close to max) load? (Asked February 28, 2024)
The unit requires a flow rate of 152,000 BTU/h at max load.
Does the width measurement (25.5”) include the wheels? Can the generator be connected to the transfer switch as is, or does the bond need to be changed? (Asked February 05, 2025)
The dimensions include the wheels. If your transfer switch has a bonded neutral, then the generator should have a floating neutral. You may want to team up with a local licensed electrician to guide you to what is the appropriate for your home wiring.
Can you get the max. (24 continuous amps) out of the L14-30R receptacle ? (Asked September 05, 2025)
Both the L14-30R and 14-50R receptacles will provide up to 30 running amps on gasoline, and 24.5 on natural gas.
