Zoom on the Champion 201161

In a nutshell, the Champion 201161 is a powerful portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • Professionals in need of safely powering high-intensity work or lighting equipment
  • Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures

In the forthcoming sections, you'll delve into its power characteristics, the various outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the additional features it boasts.

Power & Run Time

The Champion 201161 in use

The Champion 201161

The Champion 201161 delivers 120/240V and is equipped with a tri-fuel technology, enabling it to operate on gasoline, propane, or natural gas. When powered by gasoline, it achieves a running wattage of 12,000W and a peak wattage of 15,000W. Switching to propane provides 11,000 rated watts and 13,750 peak watts, while natural gas operation delivers 10,000W of rated wattage and 12,500W of starting wattage.

Operating with a noise level of 78 dBA (less noisy than a vacuum cleaner), the generator starts up via a straightforward and intuitive electric starter (battery included).

Regarding its running time, the 201161, with a 11 gallons fuel capacity, can operate for around 9 hours at 50% load with a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 1.22 GPH). When using propane, it can run for around 3.5 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 1.34 GPH).

The powering of sensitive electronic devices with the 201161 is not recommended due to its high THD (<20%).

Outlets

The control panel features the upcoming 7 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle
120/240V 50A (14-50R) receptacle

Despite not having the 'RV Ready' status, this Champion generator provides the benefit of convenient RV compatibility through its L5-30R receptacle, enabling you to easily power your RV using an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. Besides, the 201161's twist-lock L14-30R receptacle makes it transfer switch ready, enabling hassle-free connection to your breaker box for powering your home during outages.

Portability

At L32.7 x W33.7 x H33.1 in, the Champion 201161 boasts a traditional open frame structure, ensuring stability and allowing for convenient maintenance access to components, promoting air circulation. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.

Although this generator is technically considered 'portable' (in the sense that it can be moved), its 331 lbs make it incredibly difficult to manually lift and transport. Despite the restricted maneuverability, its wheel kit (⌀12") and its folding handle provides a solution, allowing for convenient shifting once the generator is positioned on the ground.

The generator comes with an additional safety feature, a lift hook on the top of its frame, which is helpful during its transport, loading and unloading.

Features

The 201161's control panel

For easy status and activity monitoring of the 201161, its control panel integrates a digital Intelligauge data center, offering insights into the lifetime run hours, power output, frequency and voltage.

The built-in fuel gauge of the generator ensures simple and quick gas level assessments.

Security-wise, this product benefits from an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.

The unit also benefits from the CO Shield™ technology, which monitors accumulation of poisonous carbon monoxide (CO) gas produced by the engine's exhaust when the generator is running. If CO Shield™ detects elevated levels of CO gas, it automatically shuts off the engine and illuminates a red LED.

Apart from the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to facilitate setup, the Champion 201161 features extra accessories: oil, natural gas hose with NPT adapter, funnel and propane hose.

The Champion 201161 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Champion 201161 compare to multi-fuel generators of similar power (between 10000 and 14000 W).

  • Weighing 331 lbs, the Champion 201161 is one of the heavier multi-fuel generators within the 10000-14000 rated wattage bracket. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the DuroStar DS13000MX, standing at just 209 lbs.
  • Since the generator's noise is rated at 78 dBA, it has the roughly average expected noise for a device of similar type and power. If noise emissions are important to you, one of the least noisy generators of this power range is the DuroMax XP16000iHT with only 67 dBA.
  • As for its autonomy, the 201161, with an autonomy of around 9 hours at a 50% load, is placed on the low end among the generators of its kind. If run time is one of your main concerns, the Predator 13000 could be worth looking at. It boasts one of the highest run times among units of comparable power, lasting around 12.1 hours.
  • Though run time is a significant parameter, it's closely tied to the generator's fuel tank size. To get a comprehensive understanding, fuel efficiency must also be taken into account. In fact, this generator is not one of the most fuel-efficient options in the aforementioned wattage range: its estimated gasoline consumption at 50% load is around 1.22 GPH. If not satisfied with the afore-mentioned fuel consumption, you may wish to check out the WEN TF1450. With a fuel consumption of as little as 0.68 GPH, it is one of the most efficient generators currently on the market.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 10000-14000W multi-fuel generators, the Champion 201161 is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
