Zoom on the Champion 201157

The Champion 201157 replaced the 200973. It's a portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • RV travellers looking for even more independence
  • People occasionally participating in sporting competitions, open-air performances and outdoor festivals
  • Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout

The subsequent sections will explore in detail its power characteristics, the diverse outlets it provides, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it offers.

Power & Run Time

The Champion 201157 in use

The Champion 201157

Delivering 120V, the Champion 201157 is enhanced by dual-fuel technology, providing power and versatility. Running on gasoline, it boasts a running wattage of 3,650W and a starting wattage of 4,550W. Alternatively, when propane-powered, it delivers 3,285 running watts and 4,100 starting watts.

Operating with a noise rating of 68 dBA (less noisy than an office), this generator offers two starting options: a standard recoil pull-rope starting mechanism and a no-fuss and convenient electric starter (battery included).

In terms of running time, the 201157, equipped with a 4.7 gallons fuel tank, is capable of running continuously for around 14 hours at 50% load on a full gasoline tank (with fuel consumption estimated at around 0.34 gallons per hour). When utilizing propane, it provides around 10.5 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.45 GPH) of operation.

The 201157 is unsuitable for the powering of sensitive electronic devices due to its high THD (<20%).

Outlets

The control panel provides the upcoming 4 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (TT-30R) receptacle
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle

This Champion generator is RV Ready, as it features a TT-30R receptacle (TT stands for 'Travel Trailer').

Portability

At L24.7 x W25 x H22.2 in, the traditional open frame structure of the Champion 201157 ensures stability while facilitating convenient maintenance access to components and promoting air cooling. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.

Despite its 129 lbs, the generator falls under the category of 'portable,' signifying its movability, although its weight may hinder easy portability. Nonetheless, the limited maneuverability is compensated for by utilizing its wheel kit (⌀8") and its folding handle, which facilitates shifting once the generator is set on the ground.

Features

Panel of the Champion 201157

The 201157's control panel

The control panel of the 201157 is equipped with an Intelligauge meter, showing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours metrics, aiding in monitoring its status and activity.

The generator includes a built-in fuel gauge, a quick, easy and convenient method of checking the device’s gas level.

From a security standpoint, the product offers an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, allowing you to use it with a peace of mind. Champion's built-in surge protector (Volt Guard™) safeguards your equipment and appliances against voltage spikes.

The unit also benefits from the CO Shield™ technology, which monitors accumulation of poisonous carbon monoxide (CO) gas produced by the engine's exhaust when the generator is running. If CO Shield™ detects elevated levels of CO gas, it automatically shuts off the engine and illuminates a red LED.

Along the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), useful for starting the generator right away, the Champion 201157's package also includes these accessories: propane hose, oil and funnel.

The Champion 201157 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Champion 201157 compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 3500 and 4500 W).

  • With its weight of 129 lbs, the Champion 201157 is one of the heavier dual fuel generators in the 3500-4500 rated wattage category. Regarding dry weight, one of the champions in the same power range is the WEN DF402iX, with a dry weight of only 66.1 lbs.
  • When comparing it to devices with a similar running wattage, this generator's lowest noise level of 68 dBA puts it alongside the noisier units. If you are concerned with noise, check out the Westinghouse iGen5000DF, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, with a noise rating of just 52 dBA.
  • Thanks to an impressive running time of around 14 hours at 50% load, the 201157 benefits from a higher run time than many dual fuel generators of a similar output. For those prioritizing autonomy, the Westinghouse iGen5000DF could be considered, as it offers one of the longest run times among generators with similar power output, reaching around 15 hours.
  • Run time is crucial, but it heavily relies on the fuel tank's capacity. Thus, considering fuel efficiency alongside is essential. When operating at 50% load, the generator's fuel consumption is estimated at 0.34 GPH, placing it within the average range of gasoline usage among similarly powerful devices. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.23 GPH, the Westinghouse iGen5000DF is a device you could look out for.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 3500-4500W dual fuel generators, the Champion 201157 is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
