Zoom on the Champion 201155

The Champion 201155 is the newer version of the 200993. It's a compact portable inverter generator especially useful for:

  • RV travellers looking for even more independence
  • People occasionally participating in outdoor fairs, festivals or events
  • Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
  • Tailgating and campground aficionados with the desire of enjoying power anywhere they go

The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the extra features it benefits from.

Power & Run Time

The Champion 201155 in use

The Champion 201155

With a 212 cc OHV 4-stroke engine, the Champion 201155 operates on gasoline, providing 120V, with a running wattage of 3,650W and a starting wattage of 4,650W. In addition, the device is parallel capable (ParaLink (opens in a new tab) not included) and thus, can be linked to a similar or compatible unit for added power.

The inverter generator features a manual recoil starter system and also a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included). It is rated for a noise of 61 dBA (just slightly more noisy than an office). Champion’s EZ Start Dial lets you intuitively start the engine with easy access to all the controls you need. Additionally, the 201155 features remote starting, offering users increased convenience (key fob included).

The 201155 can operate for up to 14 hours with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.16 GPH), due to its fuel capacity of 2.3 gallons.

The 201155 ensures a clean sine wave output, boasting <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) to protect your sensitive electronics when connected to its AC outlets.

The control panel is equipped with the following 3 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (TT-30R) receptacle

Additionally, it offers 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A (cigarette lighter style) receptacle providing easy battery charging capabilities. Since a dual port USB adapter is included with the unit, you will also be able to use the DC receptacle to conveniently charge electronics such as mobile phones and tablets.

With its TT-30R receptacle (TT as in 'Travel Trailer'), this Champion generator is RV Ready.

Since the Champion 201155 is an inverter generator, its closed design (L23.2 x W17.7 x H20.1 in) not only provides an aesthetic advantage but also contributes to reduced noise levels compared to conventional, open frame devices. The generator has a contemporary design, convenient for recreationally generating power.

Despite its weight of 101 lbs, the generator is considered 'portable,' signifying its capability to be moved, albeit its heaviness may hinder easy transport. However, the lack of maneuverability can be offset with its set of 2 wheels (⌀5") and its folding handle, which allows for convenient shifting once the generator is placed on the ground.

The 201155's control panel

Designed with a digital Intelligauge data center, the control panel of the 201155 grants you access to crucial data on the power output, voltage, frequency and lifetime run hours, ensuring practical monitoring of its status and activity.

In addition to this info, the device's light indicator will illuminate to indicate if the oil level is too low.

Equipped with a built-in fuel gauge, the inverter generator facilitates swift gas level checks.

Regarding security, the generator comes with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), providing peace of mind during operation.

The unit also benefits from the CO Shield™ technology, which monitors accumulation of poisonous carbon monoxide (CO) gas produced by the engine's exhaust when the generator is running. If CO Shield™ detects elevated levels of CO gas, it automatically shuts off the engine and illuminates a red LED.

While the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), helpful for starting the device promptly, come with the Champion 201155, the following accessories are also included: oil, funnel, dual port USB adapter and key fob.

The Champion 201155 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Champion 201155 compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 3500 and 4500 W).

  • With a dry weight of 101 lbs, the Champion 201155 sits comfortably within the expected weight range for inverters generating 3500 to 4500 rated watts. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Genmax GM4600iAEFIC, standing at just 58.4 lbs.
  • Since the inverter generator's noise is rated at 61 dBA, it has the roughly average expected noise for a device of similar type and power. If noise emissions are one of your priorities, you may be interested in the Westinghouse iGen4500DF, one of the least noisy generators similarly powerful as this one, rated for 52 dBA.
  • Concerning its runtime, the 201155 provides up to 14 hours at a 25% load, indicating that it falls on the lower side compared to other generators of its type and power range. If prolonged run time is essential to your needs, you could consider the Firman W03661OF, which offers one of the highest autonomy among devices with similar power output, lasting up to 25 hours.
  • Run times are important, yet thanks to their dependence on the fuel capacity, they should be judged along with the fuel consumption of the device. Among generators of similar power, this inverter generator stands out with one of the best fuel efficiency, with consumption rates around 0.16 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 3500-4500W inverter generators, the Champion 201155 is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

The bottom line

  • In the expected price range
  • CO Shield™ technology
  • Several accessories included
  • RV Ready
  • Remote start
  • Parallel capable
  • Inverter
  • Fuel efficient
  • Decent weight (101 lbs)

Currently fighting getting this _brand new_ generator… Have worked with their tech support and haven’t gotten anywhere. Had to disconnect the low oil sensor to even get as far as I have… Generator runs for one second and shuts off, nothing plugged in. This is the worst pile of junk I have ever bought.

I have never been able to get this inverter generator to run with a substantial load. It does not maintain voltage and trips every time. I can’t even get it to run a 1500 watt heat gun on the 120 outlet without tripping. Champion told me that the heat gun is too much for the 120 outlet that I needed to buy an adapter and use the 30 amp outlet. I explained that I cannot put any substantial load on the generator using either outlet. They wanted me to send another video. I explained I have owned many generators and I can run my 1500 watt heat gun on all my generators using the 120 outlets with no issues. My 2000 watt generator has no problem running the 1500 watt heat gun. This is a 4650 watt generator! There is no reason why it shouldn’t run 1500 watt appliance. I don’t have time to go back and forth. I need a product that works! I am returning the product and will never buy a champion product again.

    + PROS:
    • None
    - CONS:
    • Never worked and Champion customer service was absolutely zero help!
