Power & Run Time

The Champion 200991 in use

The Champion 200991

The dual-fuel technology of the Champion 200991 allows for an output of 120V and provides superb power and versatility. If gasoline-powered, the device provides a running wattage of 3500W and a starting wattage of 4500W. If propane-powered, it gives 3150 rated watts and 4500 starting watts. Additionally, as the generator is parallel capable (ParaLink (opens in a new tab) not included), it can be linked to a second unit for more power.

The inverter generator is rated for a noise of 61 dBA (just slightly more noisy than an office). Its starting mechanisms include a simple traditional pull-start mechanism and a convenient and easy-to-use electric starter (battery included). Champion’s EZ Start Dial lets you intuitively start the engine with easy access to all the controls you need.

The 200991, with a fuel capacity of 2.3 gallons, reaches a run time of up to 14 hours utilizing gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.16 GPH). Alternatively, it can reach a run time of up to 21 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.22 GPH) with propane.

Sensitive electronics can be safely plugged in the AC outlets, as the 200991 produces a clean sine wave, with a <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD).

Outlets

The control panel includes the following 3 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (TT-30R) receptacle

Additionally, it features 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports with which charging of electronics like mobile phones and tablets is made convenient.

This Champion generator is RV Ready, as it features a TT-30R receptacle (TT stands for 'Travel Trailer').

Portability

Thanks to its closed inverter generator design (L23.2 x W17.7 x H20.1 in), the Champion 200991, is more esthetical than a typical, open frame generator. The featured design follows the latest trends and is ideal for easy and recreational use.

While the generator is considered to be technically 'portable' (in the sense that you can move it), manually lifting and transporting it may be challenging, due to its high weight of 103 lbs. However, its challenging mobility is solved by its set of 2 wheels (⌀5") and its folding handle, which will ease its displacement, once it is on the floor.

Features

The 200991's control panel

To help you monitor the 200991's status and activity, its control panel is equipped with a digital Intelligauge data center, giving you information on the power output, voltage and lifetime run hours.

In addition to this info, the light indicators show you if the generator is on overload, the generator is ready and its oil levels are insufficient.

A built-in fuel gauge allows for a quick, easy and convenient check of the fuel level of the inverter generator.

Security-wise, this product benefits from an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it.

Apart from the typical documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), which lets you start it right away, the Champion 200991 also is packed along with the following accessories: oil, funnel, propane hose and tool kit. An official storm cover is also available, as a separate purchase.

Emissions

The Champion 200991 is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Therefore, its sale and purchase are permitted in all of the 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor and thus, may be used in forested areas.

The Champion 200991 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Champion 200991 compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 3000 and 4000 W).

  • With a dry weight of 103 pounds, the Champion 200991 finds itself in the expected weight range for inverter generators able to produce between 3000 and 4000 rated watts. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Genmax GM3300i, standing at just 47.4 lbs.
  • This inverter generator has a somewhat average expected noise for its type and power range, rated at 61 dBA. If you are concerned with noise, check out the Westinghouse iGen4500DF, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, with a noise rating of just 52 dBA.
  • As for its autonomy, the 200991, with an autonomy of up to 14 hours at a 25% load, is placed on the low end among the generators of its kind. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the Firman W03661OF, with up to 25 hours.
  • Even though run times are undoubtedly important, they are dependent on the fuel capacity to a large extent. For a more wholesome picture, we must take into consideration the fuel consumption of the generator. With an estimated gasoline consumption of 0.16 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load, this inverter generator is among the more fuel efficient of the products in the above-mentioned wattage range. If not satisfied with the afore-mentioned fuel consumption, you may wish to check out the Energizer eZV3500P. With a fuel consumption of as little as 0.13 GPH, it is one of the most efficient generators currently on the market.

Price comparison

As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 3000-4000W dual fuel inverter generators, the Champion 200991 is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.

I bought this for back-up power during outages and to use while camping in our RV. I love the fact that it is RV ready and will power out 13.5kw A/C and other appliances simultaneously. I have only run it on propane, and really don’t plan on using gasoline unless necessary. It starts easily and runs very quietly. I run it on our RV’s onboard propane and it will run all weekend on our RV tanks with gas to spare. I would highly recommend this generator to any of my friends.

    + PROS:
    • Powerful
    • Quiet
    • Fuel efficient
    - CONS:
    • It may be a bit heavy for a smaller person to move around, although, the folding handle works very well.
