Zoom on the Champion 200962

In summary, the Champion 200962 is a quiet, compact and lightweight portable inverter generator especially useful for:

  • Camping and tailgating hobbyists looking for a portable power source
  • Amateur DIY lovers

In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed.

Power & Run Time

The Champion 200962 in use

The Champion 200962

Delivering 120V, the Champion 200962 is enhanced by dual-fuel technology, providing power and versatility. Running on gasoline, it boasts a running wattage of 1,850W and a starting wattage of 2,500W. Alternatively, when propane-powered, it delivers 1,665 running watts and 2,500 starting watts. Moreover, the parallel capability (ParaLink (opens in a new tab) not included) enables doubling of power output when paired with another similar or compatible unit, providing increased energy capacity and versatility for a wide range of needs.

The inverter generator features a simple traditional pull-start mechanism. It is rated for a noise of 53 dBA (just slightly more noisy than rainfall). Champion’s EZ Start Dial lets you intuitively start the engine with easy access to all the controls you need.

Concerning its running time, the 200962, featuring a 1.1 gallon fuel tank, can continuously run for up to 11.5 hours with a full gasoline tank (consuming fuel at approximately 0.1 gallons per hour). Alternatively, when utilizing propane, it offers up to 34 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.14 GPH) of runtime.

The 200962 generates a clean sine wave: providing <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), delicate electronics can be plugged in its AC outlets safely.

Outlets

The control panel features 2 AC outlets as follows:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)

In addition, it provides 2 DC outlets: there's two 5V USB ports (USB-A) enabling convenient charging of devices like mobile phones and tablets.

Portability

As an inverter generator, the Champion 200962 showcases a closed design (L17.3 x W11.5 x H17.7 in), enhancing aesthetics and ensuring quieter operation compared to conventional, open frame models. The design follows the contemporary trends and is perfect for recreationally generating power.

The 200962 boasts a weight of merely 39 lbs, solidifying its reputation as a lightweight, easily transportable generator. With its manageable weight, one person can easily move it around, ensuring power wherever needed. With its handle (molded in the case), carrying it becomes a breeze, adding to its convenience.

The device’s light indicators will display if the generator is ready, the generator is overloaded and its oil levels are insufficient.

From a security standpoint, the generator is furnished with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), ensuring peace of mind during operation.

Alongside the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) for quick setup, the Champion 200962 is bundled with additional accessories: propane hose, funnel and oil. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

The Champion 200962 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Champion 200962 compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 1500 and 2500 W).

  • Regarding weight, the Champion 200962 comes in at only 39 pounds, positioning itself as one of the lighter options among inverter generators spanning from 1500 to 2500 in rated wattage. if you wish to prioritize weight, the Genmax GM2000i is one of the top contenders in its power category, weighing only 34.2 pounds.
  • The inverter generator's noise output, rated at 53 dBA, falls within the average range expected for devices in its type and power range. For those who are looking for a less noisy device, we suggest the Honda EU2200i. With just 48 dBA, it is one of the most quiet devices in this power range.
  • Among its inverters with similar power, the 200962 offers one of the higher run times, running for up to 11.5 hours at 25% load. For those prioritizing autonomy, the DuroMax XP2300iH could be considered, as it offers one of the longest run times among generators with similar power output, reaching up to 13 hours.
  • Run times are important, yet thanks to their dependence on the fuel capacity, they should be judged along with the fuel consumption of the device. This inverter generator provides better fuel efficiency than most others in its wattage range, consuming approximately 0.1 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load. If gasoline efficiency is at the top of your list, you may want to have a look at the DuroMax XP2300iH, which has great fuel efficiency, with a gas consumption of only 0.08 gallons per hour.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 1500-2500W dual fuel inverter generators, the Champion 200962 is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
