Zoom on the Champion 200921

In summary, the Champion 200921 is a compact portable generator especially useful for:

  • RV travellers who wish to upgrade their experience to another level
  • Occasional participants of outdoor events, competitions, concerts and festivals
  • Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials

In the forthcoming sections, you'll delve into its power characteristics, the various outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the additional features it boasts.

Power & Run Time

The Champion 200921 in use

The Champion 200921

With a 224 cc OHV 4-stroke engine, the Champion 200921 operates on gasoline, providing 120/240V, with a running wattage of 4,000W and a starting wattage of 5,000W.

At a noise rating of 68 dBA (less noisy than an office), the generator is started via a simple traditional pull-start mechanism.

The fuel capacity of 4.7 gallons allows the 200921 to operate for around 14 hours at 50% load with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.34 GPH).

The powering of sensitive electronic devices with the 200921 is not recommended due to its high THD (<20%).

Outlets

The control panel includes the following 4 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (TT-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

With its TT-30R receptacle (TT standing for 'Travel Trailer'), this Champion generator is RV Ready, perfectly suited for powering recreational vehicles. In addition, as the 200921 holds a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, it is transfer switch ready: you'll easily be able to connect it to your breaker box to power your home during a power outage.

Portability

At L23.2 x W18.3 x H20.2 in, the Champion 200921 boasts a traditional open frame structure, ensuring stability and allowing for convenient maintenance access to components, promoting air circulation. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.

Though weighing 104.7 lbs, the generator remains classified as 'portable,' indicating its capability to be moved, though its weight could pose transport challenges. Investing in the official wheel kit (opens in a new tab) could be a wise choice to enhance the generator's mobility.

Features

The 200921's control panel

Included in the control panel of the 200921 are an Intelligauge meter, showing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours metrics, essential for monitoring its status and activity.

Featuring a built-in fuel gauge, the generator offers quick, convenient, and easy gas level checks at a glance.

From a security standpoint, the product offers an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, allowing you to use it with a peace of mind. Champion's built-in surge protector (Volt Guard™) safeguards your equipment and appliances against voltage spikes.

Alongside the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) for quick setup, the Champion 200921 is bundled with additional accessories: oil and funnel. The official storage cover and running cover are also available, as separate purchases.

The Champion 200921 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Champion 200921 compare to generators of similar power (between 3500 and 4500 W).

  • Having a dry weight of 104.7 lbs, the Champion 200921 belongs in the expected weight range for generators which produce 3500 to 4500 rated watts. Regarding dry weight, one of the champions in the same power range is the Genmax GM4600iAEFIC, with a dry weight of only 58.4 lbs.
  • This generator, with its lowest noise level at 68 dBA, is noisier than most generators of comparable running wattage. For those who are looking for a less noisy device, we suggest the Westinghouse iGen4500DF. With just 52 dBA, it is one of the most quiet devices in this power range.
  • With around 14 hours of runtime at 50% load, the 200921 provides a higher run time when compared to similarly powerful products. If prolonged run time is essential to your needs, you could consider the Predator 4375, which offers one of the highest autonomy among devices with similar power output, lasting around 16 hours.
  • The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. This generator provides better fuel efficiency than most others in its wattage range, consuming approximately 0.34 GPH (gallon per hour) at 50% load. If you wish to get a unit of similar power, but with one of the best fuel efficiency, you could consider the Westinghouse iGen4500DF, which has an impressively low fuel consumption of 0.23 GPH.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 3500-4500W generators, the Champion 200921 is on the cheap side of the price range.

It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
