Description
Zoom on the Champion 100814
In a few words, the Champion 100814 is a portable generator perfectly suited for:
- Food truck owners who do not wish to see their business interrupted under any circumstances
- Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
- Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working
- RV travellers who wish to upgrade their experience to another level
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed.
Power & Run Time
The Champion 100814 is powered by a 420 cc OHV 4-stroke engine. It delivers 120/240V, runs on gasoline and offers a running wattage of 7,500W as well as a peak wattage of 9,375W.
Operating with a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a dishwasher), this generator offers two starting options: a simple traditional pull-start mechanism and a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included).
With its 5.7 gallons fuel tank, the 100814 can operate for around 8 hours at 50% load when fully fueled (with fuel usage averaging around 0.71 GPH).
The quite high THD (<20%) of the 100814 makes it unsuitable for powering sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel includes the following 6 AC outlets:
With its 14-50R outlet, this Champion unit is RV-ready for owners with a 50-amp service in their RVs. In addition, with its twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the 100814 is designed to be transfer switch ready, allowing easy connection to your breaker box for powering your home during a blackout.
Portability
With dimensions of L29.9 x W27.2 x H25.2 in, the traditional open frame design of the Champion 100814 ensures stability while allowing easy maintenance access to components and promoting effective air cooling. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.
Despite its weight of 202.8 lbs, the generator is still considered 'portable,' meaning it is movable, although its heftiness may restrict portability in certain environments or require additional considerations for transportation and setup. Nonetheless, the limited maneuverability is compensated for by utilizing its wheel kit and its folding handle, which facilitates shifting once the generator is set on the ground.
Features
Included in the control panel of the 100814 are an Intelligauge meter, providing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours data, essential for monitoring its status and activity.
Security-wise, this product benefits from an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it. Champion's built-in surge protector (Volt Guard™) safeguards your equipment and appliances against voltage spikes.
In addition to the traditional documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to help you get started promptly, the Champion 100814 also includes several accessories: funnel and oil.
The Champion 100814 versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Champion 100814 compare to generators of similar power (between 7000 and 8000 W).
- With a dry weight of 202.8 lbs, the Champion 100814 sits comfortably within the expected weight range for devices generating 7000 to 8000 rated watts. If weight is a key factor for your needs, the Genmax GM10500XiT is noteworthy for being one of the top contenders in this power range, with a dry weight of 123.5 pounds.
- The generator can be considered average in its noise for its power category, as it is rated at 74 dBA. For those who are looking for a less noisy device, we suggest the Champion 201175. With just 61 dBA, it is one of the most quiet devices in this power range.
- Regarding its autonomy, the autonomy of the 100814, reaching around 8 hours at a 50% load, can be considered as low end, compared to other products of a roughly equal output. If run time is one of your main concerns, the Predator 9000 could be worth looking at. It boasts one of the highest run times among units of comparable power, lasting around 13 hours.
- Though run time is a significant parameter, it's closely tied to the generator's fuel tank size. To get a comprehensive understanding, fuel efficiency must also be taken into account. As this generator uses an estimated 0.71 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load, it finds itself in the average gasoline consumption range of similar products. To prioritize fuel savings, we advise considering the Cummins Onan P9500df, which stands out for its gasoline efficiency, consuming just 0.6 gallons per hour.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 7000-8000W generators, the Champion 100814 is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
