Zoom on the Champion 100814
In a few words, the Champion 100814 is a portable generator perfectly suited for:
- Food van owners who know that just a short power outage could lose them hundreds of dollars
- Homeowners who want to be sure of their ability to power their fridges, cooking tools, heating and lighting equipment during power failures
- Professionals who want to be able to deliver results, even during a power failure
- RV travellers looking for even more independence
The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the extra features it benefits from.
Power & Run Time
Featuring a 420 cc OHV 4-stroke engine, the Champion 100814 operates using gasoline, providing 120/240V, with a running wattage of 7,500W and a starting wattage of 9,375W.
The generator is rated for a noise of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a vacuum cleaner). Its starting mechanisms include a manual recoil starter system and a no-fuss and convenient electric starter (battery included).
With its 5.7 gallons fuel tank, the 100814 can operate for around 8 hours at 50% load when fully fueled (with fuel usage averaging around 0.71 GPH).
Considering its high Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of less than 20%, it is not recommended to rely on the 100814 for powering sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel features the upcoming 6 AC outlets:
For RV owners with a 50-amp service, this Champion unit is RV-ready, boasting a 14-50R outlet. In addition, with its twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the 100814 is configured to be transfer switch ready, allowing straightforward connection to your breaker box to supply backup power to your home during outages.
Portability
At L29.9 x W27.2 x H25.2 in, the traditional open frame structure of the Champion 100814 ensures stability while facilitating convenient maintenance access to components and promoting air cooling. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.
Despite its weight of 202.8 lbs, the generator is considered 'portable,' signifying its capability to be moved, albeit its heaviness may hinder easy transport. Despite the restricted maneuverability, its wheel kit and its folding handle provides a solution, allowing for convenient shifting once the generator is positioned on the ground.
Features
Integrated into the control center of the 100814 are an Intelligauge meter, showing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours metrics, facilitating the monitoring of its status and activity.
Considering security aspects, the generator boasts an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), offering peace of mind throughout operation. Champion's built-in surge protector (Volt Guard™) safeguards your equipment and appliances against voltage spikes.
With the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), letting you start the generator quickly, the Champion 100814 also comes with several accessories, including: oil and funnel.
The Champion 100814 versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Champion 100814 compare to generators of similar power (between 7000 and 8000 W).
- Weighing in at 202.8 lbs, the Champion 100814 fits within the expected weight range for devices producing 7000 to 8000 rated watts. If weight is your top priority, one of the champions in this power category is the Genmax GM10500XiT, weighing just 123.5 pounds.
- Because this generator emits noise as low as 74 dBA, it can be considered to have a pretty average expected noise rating for a device of its power. If you are concerned with noise, check out the DuroMax XP9500iH, which is one of the least noisy generators in its power range, with a noise rating of just 61 dBA.
- Autonomy-wise, with around 8 hours on a full tank at a 50% load, the 100814 is on the low end when compared to other generators of a similar power output. If you consider autonomy on a single full tank as one of the deciding factors, one of the generators in the same power range that offers the highest run time is the Champion 100416, with around 12.5 hours.
- Autonomy holds its importance, however, it is largely dependent on the generator’s fuel capacity and so, it is nonsensible to discuss it without mentioning fuel efficiency as well. Standing at an estimated 0.71 GPH (gallon per hour) at a 50% load, this generator is somewhat average in this area compared to other devices, within the aforementioned wattage range. If you wish to get a unit of similar power, but with one of the best fuel efficiency, you could consider the Cummins Onan P9500df, which has an impressively low fuel consumption of 0.6 GPH.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 7000-8000W generators, the Champion 100814 is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
The bottom line
- Inexpensive
- GFCI Outlets
- Electric start
- Decent weight (202.8 lbs)
- Acceptable noise (74 dBA)
- Decent fuel efficiency
- No remote start
- Relatively low run time

User Reviews
I’ve had my generator for about 4 years now and it has performed well. I purchased it on sale at Northern Tool for about $850 + tax. After a storm in July 2024, we were without power for 14 days and it ran my whole house, minus the central air. It runs about 10 hours on 6 gallons of gas, that’s running 2 window A/C units, 2 refrigerators, ceiling fans and TV. It was money well spent. I’ve finally had my first problem with the electric start after 4 years, but the pull start still works great. When I say works great, even with the electric start out, it kicked off on the first pull of the cord. I use StaBil in the fuel and run it 20 minutes every month.
I bought a new Champion Model 100814 generator and really like it.
