Description
Zoom on the Champion 100814
In a few words, the Champion 100814 is a portable generator perfectly suited for:
- Food truck owners who do not wish to see their business interrupted under any circumstances
- Homeowners who want to be able to use the most necessary devices in their household, even during a blackout
- Professionals who want to ensure that a power failure will not prevent them from working
- RV travellers who wish to upgrade their experience to another level
In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed.
Power & Run Time
The Champion 100814 is powered by a 420 cc OHV 4-stroke engine. It delivers 120/240V, runs on gasoline and offers a running wattage of 7,500W as well as a peak wattage of 9,375W.
Operating with a noise rating of 74 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a dishwasher), this generator offers two starting options: a simple traditional pull-start mechanism and a simple and elegant electric starter (battery included).
With its 5.7 gallons fuel tank, the 100814 can operate for around 8 hours at 50% load when fully fueled (with fuel usage averaging around 0.71 GPH).
The quite high THD (<20%) of the 100814 makes it unsuitable for powering sensitive electronic devices.
Outlets
The control panel includes the following 6 AC outlets:
With its 14-50R outlet, this Champion unit is RV-ready for owners with a 50-amp service in their RVs. In addition, with its twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the 100814 is designed to be transfer switch ready, allowing easy connection to your breaker box for powering your home during a blackout.
Portability
With dimensions of L29.9 x W27.2 x H25.2 in, the traditional open frame design of the Champion 100814 ensures stability while allowing easy maintenance access to components and promoting effective air cooling. The featured design is ideal for the outdoors and all tough environments.
Despite its weight of 202.8 lbs, the generator is still considered 'portable,' meaning it is movable, although its heftiness may restrict portability in certain environments or require additional considerations for transportation and setup. Nonetheless, the limited maneuverability is compensated for by utilizing its wheel kit and its folding handle, which facilitates shifting once the generator is set on the ground.
Features
Included in the control panel of the 100814 are an Intelligauge meter, providing voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours data, essential for monitoring its status and activity.
Security-wise, this product benefits from an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), which gives you a complete peace of mind when using it. Champion's built-in surge protector (Volt Guard™) safeguards your equipment and appliances against voltage spikes.
In addition to the traditional documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to help you get started promptly, the Champion 100814 also includes several accessories: funnel and oil.
The Champion 100814 versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Champion 100814 compare to generators of similar power (between 7000 and 8000 W).
- As its weight is 202.8 pounds, the Champion 100814 falls in the expected weight range of the devices in the 7000-8000 rated wattage category. if you wish to prioritize weight, the Genmax GM10500XiT is one of the top contenders in its power category, weighing only 123.5 pounds.
- At 74 dBA, this generator's noise rating is in line with the expected average for devices within its power category. If noise emissions are one of your priorities, you may be interested in the DuroMax XP9500iH, one of the least noisy generators similarly powerful as this one, rated for 61 dBA.
- In terms of its autonomy, the 100814 can operate for around 8 hours at a 50% load, placing it within the lower bracket among generators of similar power range. Concerning the run times, one of the several devices with a comparable output, offering the highest autonomy, is the Predator 9000, which is able to run for around 13 hours.
- While the run time is an important parameter, it is dependent on the fuel tank's capacity and thus, doesn't say much on its own unless we consider fuel consumption as well. The generator burns fuel at a rate of around 0.71 GPH when running at a 50% load, which is consistent with the average fuel usage of models of comparable power output. If minimizing fuel usage is one of your key priorities, the Cummins Onan P9500df is one of the most efficient devices with similar power output, with a gasoline consumption of only 0.6 gallons per hour.
Price comparison
As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 7000-8000W generators, the Champion 100814 is on the cheap side of the price range.
It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
