In the sections ahead, the power characteristics, availability of various outlets, the portability, and any additional features of the device shall be discussed, including its emission compliance information.

Power & Run Time

The Champion 100402 in use

The Champion 100402

The dual-fuel technology of the Champion 100402 allows for an output of 120V and provides superb power and versatility. If gasoline-powered, the device provides a running wattage of 1600W and a starting wattage of 2000W. If propane-powered, it gives 1440 rated watts and 1800 starting watts. Moreover, since it is parallel capable (ParaLINK parallel kit (opens in a new tab) not included), its power may be doubled if linked to a second compatible unit.

At a noise rating of 53 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a quiet suburb), the inverter generator is started via a simple traditional pull-start mechanism. Champion’s EZ Start Dial lets you intuitively start the engine with easy access to all the controls you need.

The running time of the 100402, with its 1.1 gallon fuel capacity, can reach up to 11 hours on a full tank of gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.1 GPH). With propane, it can reach up to 24 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.2 GPH). Thanks to the Fuel Fill Assist LED, an ingenious LED built right into the handle, filling up the unit’s tank is highly facilitated in poor lighting conditions. The LED can illuminate the gasoline filling area simply by pushing a button.

As the 100402 produces a clean sine wave, with a <3% Total Harmonic Disruption (THD), sensitive electronics may be plugged in the AC outlets safely.

Outlets

The control panel provides the upcoming 2 AC outlets:

Duplex 120V 20A (5-20R)

Additionally, it features 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A (cigarette lighter style) receptacle with which charging your batteries is made easy.

Portability

Thanks to its closed inverter generator design (L20.5 x W12.6 x H16.9 in), the Champion 100402, is more esthetical than a typical, open frame generator. The design follows the contemporary trends and is perfect for recreationally generating power.

Since the 100402 weighs only 47.6 lbs, it can be labeled as a portable lightweight generator. The product’s power can be enjoyed on-the-go, as it can be moved by a single person without trouble. This convenience is further enhanced thanks to its handle (molded in the case) that allows you to carry it with ease.

Features

The 100402's control panel

A digital data center, one of the features of the 100402's control panel, gives you information on the power output, fuel level, remaining run time and lifetime run hours, and thus, is helpful for the monitoring of its activity and status.

In addition to this info, several light indicators serve to show you when the generator is on overload, the generator is ready and the oil level is too low.

From a security standpoint, the product offers an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off, allowing you to use it with a peace of mind.

While the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), helpful for starting the device promptly, come with the Champion 100402, the following accessories are also included: funnel, propane hose and dual port USB adapter.

Emissions

The Champion 100402 is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. It can therefore be sold and purchased in all 50 states, including California.

Moreover, it features a spark arrestor and thus, may be used in forested areas.

The Champion 100402 versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Champion 100402 compare to generators of similar power (between 1500 and 2500 W).

  • Weight-wise, the Champion 100402 has only 47.6 lbs, which renders it one of the lighter generators which produce 1500 to 2500 rated watts. If you are concerned by weight, one of the champions in the above-mentioned power range is the Champion 200949, with a dry weight of just 38.6 pounds.
  • As its lowest possible noise is rated at 53 dBA, this inverter generator qualifies as one of the more quiet of the products of similar power. If noise emissions are one of your priorities, you may be interested in the Honda EU2200i, one of the least noisy generators similarly powerful as this one, rated for 48 dBA.
  • The 100402, offering a run time of up to 11 hours with a full tank at a 25% load, falls within the average autonomy range when compared to its peers. If concerned with autonomy, one of the products of a comparable power output, which offers the highest run time, is the Westinghouse WGen2000, boasting with up to 26 hours.
  • The run time is important, but also hugely depends on the capacity of the fuel tank and doesn't mean much if we don't talk about fuel consumption as well. This inverter generator can be considered as fuel efficient, due to its low estimated fuel consumption of only 0.1 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load, within the aforementioned wattage range. If you wish to acquire one of the most gasoline efficient products of this power range, the Predator 2000, with a fuel consumption of 0.08 GPH could be in your good books.

Price comparison

As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 1500-2500W generators, the Champion 100402 is on the average side of the price range.

Therefore, this generator nicely fits in the expected budget for this kind of product.
