Zoom on the Champion 100402
In a nutshell, the Champion 100402 is a quiet, compact and lightweight portable inverter generator mostly geared towards:
- Camping and tailgating buffs looking to enhance their experience
- Handcrafting enthusiasts who wish to work on-the-go
In the following paragraphs, we shall explore the power characteristics, available outlets, portability, and any additional features of the device, along with its emission compliance information.
Power & Run Time
The dual-fuel technology of the Champion 100402 allows for an output of 120V and provides superb power and versatility. If gasoline-powered, the device provides a running wattage of 1,600W and a starting wattage of 2,000W. If propane-powered, it gives 1,440 rated watts and 1,800 starting watts. In addition, the device is parallel capable (ParaLINK parallel kit (opens in a new tab) not included) and thus, can be linked to a similar or compatible unit for added power.
The inverter generator features a simple traditional pull-start mechanism. It is rated for a noise of 53 dBA (just slightly more noisy than a refrigerator). Champion’s EZ Start Dial lets you intuitively start the engine with easy access to all the controls you need.
With a fuel capacity of 1.1 gallon, the 100402 can operate for up to 11 hours using gasoline (fuel consumption around 0.1 GPH), or for up to 24 hours (on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.2 GPH) using propane. Thanks to the Fuel Fill Assist LED, an ingenious LED built right into the handle, filling up the unit’s tank is highly facilitated in poor lighting conditions. The LED can illuminate the gasoline filling area simply by pushing a button.
Delicate electronics can be plugged in an AC outlets safely, as the 100402 generates a clean sine wave, reaching a <3% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD).
Outlets
The control panel provides the upcoming 2 AC outlets:
It also sports 1 DC outlet: there's a 12V 8A (cigarette lighter style) receptacle with which charging your batteries is made easy. Since a dual port USB adapter is included with the unit, you will also be able to use the DC receptacle to conveniently charge electronics such as mobile phones and tablets.
Portability
Thanks to its closed inverter generator design (L20.5 x W12.6 x H16.9 in), the Champion 100402, is more esthetical than a typical, open frame generator. This type of design is the most modern and convenient way to recreationally generate power.
Labeled a lightweight portable generator, the 100402 weighs just 47.6 lbs. The product’s power can be enjoyed on-the-go, as it can be moved by a single person without trouble. Further convenience is provided by its handle (molded in the case), as it allows you to carry it effortlessly.
Features
One of the many 100402's features is the data center, included in its control panel, which conveniently provides information on the lifetime run hours, power output, remaining run time and fuel level and thus, helps you monitor its activity and status.
In addition to this info, the device’s light indicators will display if the generator is on overload, the oil level is too low and the generator is ready.
As far as security is concerned, the generator can be used with a peace of mind, as it features an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off.
While the standard documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), helpful for starting the device promptly, come with the Champion 100402, the following accessories are also included: funnel, dual port USB adapter and propane hose.
Emissions
The Champion 100402 is EPA-approved and CARB-compliant. Thus, selling and purchasing this generator is allowed in each of the 50 states, including California.
Moreover, it features a spark arrestor and therefore, can be used in forested areas.

The Champion 100402 versus other generators
The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the Champion 100402 compare to inverter generators of similar power (between 1500 and 2500 W).
- With a dry weight of 47.6 pounds, the Champion 100402 finds itself in the expected weight range for inverter generators able to produce between 1500 and 2500 rated watts. If weight matters to you, one of the champions in this power range is the Genmax GM2000i with only 34.2 pounds.
- The inverter generator can be considered average in its noise for its type and power category, as it is rated at 53 dBA. If you’d prefer a less noisy device, one of the most quiet devices, which share the same power range with this one, is the Honda EU2200i, whose lowest noise levels reach just 48 dBA.
- Since the 100402 boasts with a run time of up to 11 hours at 25% load, it can be safely judged as a device of a higher run time than most inverter generators of a comparable output. If autonomy is your priority, one of the devices of a similar power output with the highest run time is the DuroMax XP2300iH, reaching up to 13 hours.
- Autonomy holds its importance, however, it is largely dependent on the generator’s fuel capacity and so, it is nonsensible to discuss it without mentioning fuel efficiency as well. This inverter generator can be considered as fuel efficient, due to its low estimated fuel consumption of only 0.1 GPH (gallon per hour) at 25% load, within the aforementioned wattage range. If you are concerned with gasoline efficiency, having a fuel consumption of just 0.08 GPH, the DuroMax XP2300iH is a device you could look out for.
Price comparison
As you can see from this interactive chart, when compared to other 1500-2500W dual fuel inverter generators, the Champion 100402 is on the expensive side of the price range.
While certainly not the cheapest of its kind, purchasing it would most likely also mean enjoying the reliability of a high-end product.
The bottom line
- Dual Fuel
- Several accessories included
- Parallel capable
- Fuel Fill Assist LED
- Inverter
- High run time
- Fuel efficient
- Decent weight (47.6 lbs)
- Acceptable noise (53 dBA)
- On the expensive side
- No electric start
