Description

Zoom on the A-iPower GXS5000D

In summary, the A-iPower GXS5000D is a portable generator especially useful for:

  • RV travellers wishing to enhance their freedom and nomad lifestyle
  • People occasionally participating in sporting competitions, open-air performances and outdoor festivals
  • Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials

The subsequent sections will explore in detail its power characteristics, the diverse outlets it provides, its overall portability, and the supplementary features it offers.

Power & Run Time

The A-iPower GXS5000D in use

The A-iPower GXS5000D

Thanks to its dual-fuel technology, the A-iPower GXS5000D provides a 120/240V output and offers both versatility and power. When utilizing gasoline, it delivers a running wattage of 4,000W and a starting wattage of 5,000W. Alternatively, when operating on propane, it provides 3,600 running watts and 4,500 starting watts.

With a noise rating of 68 dBA (less noisy than a normal conversation), the generator's starting mechanism is centered around a standard recoil pull-rope starting mechanism.

In terms of its run time capability, the GXS5000D, furnished with a 6.3 gallons fuel tank, can maintain operations for up to 20 hours on a full tank of gasoline (with fuel consumption averaging 0.32 gallons per hour). It also provides up to 11 hours (estimation based on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.43 GPH) of operation with propane.

Due to the high THD (<23%) of the GXS5000D, it is advised against using it for powering sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel features the upcoming 6 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

Even though this A-iPower generator isn't quite RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle allows an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor (included). Besides, thanks to its twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the GXS5000D is transfer switch ready, facilitating easy hookup to your breaker box to provide backup power for your home during blackouts.

Portability

Measuring L24 x W23.6 x H24 in, the A-iPower GXS5000D showcases a classic open frame layout, offering stability and simple maintenance access to components, while facilitating air circulation. The generator is designed for outdoor use and demanding environments.

Even though this device may be technically portable (as in movable), manipulation and transportation without special equipment can be a challenge, as it weighs 114.6 pounds. However, its challenging mobility is solved by its wheel kit (⌀9") and its folding handle, which will ease its displacement, once it is on the floor.

Features

The GXS5000D's control panel

For convenient monitoring of its status and activity, the control panel of the GXS5000D includes a convenient meter, which displays voltage, frequency and lifetime hours.

In addition to this info, when the oil level is too low, you will be informed by the featured light indicator.

With its built-in fuel gauge, the generator provides quick and convenient gas level checks.

As far as security is concerned, the generator comes with an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), providing peace of mind during use.

It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.

Besides the classic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab) to get you promptly started, the A-iPower GXS5000D also comes with some accessories: tool kit, RV adapter, funnel, oil and propane hose are included.

The A-iPower GXS5000D versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the A-iPower GXS5000D compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 3500 and 4500 W).

  • At a dry weight of 114.6 pounds, the A-iPower GXS5000D is one of the heavier dual fuel devices which can produce between 3500 and 4500 running watts. In terms of weight, one of the champions in their power range is the Pulsar PGX5250BiXCO, standing at just 64 lbs.
  • This generator has a somewhat average expected noise for its type and power range, rated at 68 dBA. If noise emissions are important to you, one of the least noisy generators of this power range is the Westinghouse iGen5000DF with only 52 dBA.
  • Thanks to an impressive running time of up to 20 hours at 25% load, the GXS5000D benefits from a higher run time than many dual fuel generators of a similar output. Furthermore, considering the run times, one of the generators which have a roughly same power output, with the highest autonomy, is the DuroMax XP4850HX, as it provides up to 23 hours.
  • Run time is crucial, but it heavily relies on the fuel tank's capacity. Thus, considering fuel efficiency alongside is essential. When it comes to fuel efficiency among generators with similar wattage, this generator lags behind, with a consumption rate of 0.32 GPH at a 25% load. If fuel consumption is your top priority, we suggest to check out the Champion 201319, which has a fuel consumption of only 0.16 GPH and thus, is one of the most efficient devices in our database.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 3500-4500W dual fuel generators, the A-iPower GXS5000D is on the cheap side of the price range.

It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
