Description

Zoom on the A-iPower GXS5000D

In a nutshell, the A-iPower GXS5000D is a portable generator mostly geared towards:

  • RV travellers wishing to enhance their freedom and nomad lifestyle
  • Occasional participants of outdoor events, competitions, concerts and festivals
  • Homeowners in need of an emergency backup power for their essentials

The following sections will present you in detail its power characteristics, the different outlets it offers, its overall portability, and the extra features it benefits from.

Power & Run Time

The A-iPower GXS5000D in use

The A-iPower GXS5000D

Thanks to its dual-fuel technology, the A-iPower GXS5000D provides a 120/240V output and offers both versatility and power. When utilizing gasoline, it delivers a running wattage of 4,000W and a starting wattage of 5,000W. Alternatively, when operating on propane, it provides 3,600 running watts and 4,500 starting watts.

Rated for 68 dBA (less noisy than an office), the generator's starting mechanism relies on a manual recoil starter system.

In terms of running time, the GXS5000D, equipped with a 6.3 gallons fuel tank, is capable of running continuously for up to 20 hours on a full gasoline tank (with fuel consumption estimated at around 0.32 gallons per hour). When utilizing propane, it provides up to 11 hours (estimation based on a 20 lbs tank - propane consumption around 0.43 GPH) of operation.

Due to the high THD (<23%) of the GXS5000D, it is advised against using it for powering sensitive electronic devices.

Outlets

The control panel includes the following 6 AC outlets:

Two Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R)
120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle
120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle

Even if this A-iPower generator isn't quite RV Ready, it still allows for an easy RV connection via an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor (included), thanks to its L5-30R receptacle. Besides, equipped with a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the GXS5000D is engineered to be transfer switch ready, enabling simple hookup to your breaker box to provide backup power for your home during blackouts.

Portability

With dimensions of L24 x W23.6 x H24 in, the standard open frame design of the A-iPower GXS5000D provides stability and easy maintenance access to components, as well as good air circulation. The design is ideal for rough environments and demanding outdoor use.

As the generator's weight is 114.6 pounds, manually moving it or transporting it may be challenging, despite the fact that it is technically considered 'portable' (movable). Nevertheless, thanks to its wheel kit (⌀9") and its folding handle (a decent solution to its lack of maneuverability), the generator can be easily moved, once placed the ground.

Features

The GXS5000D's control panel

To help you monitor the GXS5000D's status and activity, its control panel is equipped with a convenient meter, offering voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours readings.

In addition to this info, the device's light indicator will illuminate to indicate if the oil level is too low.

The built-in fuel gauge of the generator ensures simple and quick gas level assessments.

Considering security aspects, the generator boasts an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), offering peace of mind throughout operation.

It also includes a carbon monoxide sensor. This sensor is designed to monitor the level of carbon monoxide present during the generator's operation. If the generator is positioned incorrectly and carbon monoxide levels rise to an unsafe level, the generator will automatically shut down.

Along the basic documentation and an owner's manual (opens in a new tab), useful for starting the generator right away, the A-iPower GXS5000D's package also includes these accessories: propane hose, tool kit, RV adapter, oil and funnel.

The A-iPower GXS5000D versus other generators

The following charts are provided to give you an idea of how some of the key specs of the A-iPower GXS5000D compare to dual fuel generators of similar power (between 3500 and 4500 W).

  • With its weight of 114.6 lbs, the A-iPower GXS5000D is one of the heavier dual fuel generators in the 3500-4500 rated wattage category. If weight matters to you, one of the champions in this power range is the Pulsar PGX5250BiXCO with only 64 pounds.
  • The generator's noise output, rated at 68 dBA, falls within the average range expected for devices in its type and power range. If noise emissions are important to you, one of the least noisy generators of this power range is the Westinghouse iGen5000DF with only 52 dBA.
  • With up to 20 hours of runtime at 25% load, the GXS5000D provides a higher run time when compared to similarly powerful dual fuel products. If prolonged run time is essential to your needs, you could consider the Firman WH03662OF, which offers one of the highest autonomy among devices with similar power output, lasting up to 25 hours.
  • Run times are important, yet thanks to their dependence on the fuel capacity, they should be judged along with the fuel consumption of the device. Compared to its peers, this generator is not exactly fuel-efficient, compared to similarly powerful devices, with an estimated fuel consumption of 0.32 GPH at a 25% load. If minimizing fuel usage is one of your key priorities, the Champion 201319 is one of the most efficient devices with similar power output, with a gasoline consumption of only 0.16 gallons per hour.

Price comparison

As you can see from these interactive charts, when compared to other 3500-4500W dual fuel generators, the A-iPower GXS5000D is on the cheap side of the price range.

It can therefore be a really good buy if you're looking to acquire a budget generator.
